I just got into Star Wars Legion which also happens to be my first miniature game. The paining process seems very daunting for someone as non-artistic as me. However, your videos are very educational and give me confidence. I'm hoping I can star paining in a few weeks once I have gathered all material. As a beginner I will probably just stop at the base colors. They look perfect for me at that point. Thank you again for these videos.

Some people will insist on, or feel financially limited to, using cheaper craft acrylics to paint miniatures. Let me stress that WHITE is one of the colors that you really need a quality, high pigment paint, designed for models, such as citadel, Vallejo, etc. If you try a cheap white, you may have a hard time getting the coverage and texture you need, and with it, you can make a mess of your models. Spend the money for the good paint, it makes the world of difference, and is critical for white...
@RahulReddy-eq5zy
@RahulReddy-eq5zy 5 жыл бұрын
Uncle Deadly I know this comment is ancient, but I'd like to absolutely stress the same with Yellow. Yellow in my opinion is sometimes even more important to get right than a nice, crisp white. There are plenty of cheap acyrilics out there which can fill many roles, however my ones I wouldn't trust at all and prefer to get proper ones when I have the avaliable cash.

@DeadRobit29

I've had better luck with a 50 cent bottle of walmart white than I ever had with Citadel whites. Citadel adds chalk to their whites and yellows and even thinned down, I've had the paint be chalky when layed down. I will sing the praises of folkarts white because it applies nice and smooth.

I fairly recently did about my fourth re-paint on a squad of stormtroopers and thought they looked pretty good. Set them on a shelf and went about my business. About 3 days later I stopped to look at them and thought to myself that they looked a lot like the thumbnail for this video. And at that point I was like... I can finally paint minis Seriously, your videos are very good. I appreciate how you mention how a lot of the steps passed Base coating is mostly optional and I always like having your videos on in the background while I'm doing my painting. @@Sorastro Question on using spray can primers. I am using Army Painter White Primer, but when I use it, I don't get smooth, consistent coatings on my stormtroopers. Instead, I get a dusty type of coat that will rub off. Is this a distance or product issue?
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 4 жыл бұрын

I think I prefer this shading technique to the one you used for the Imperial Assault Stormtroopers. Highlighting all the armor back up to white after the nuln oil wash was tedious given the sheer number of figures, but this "lining" technique seems like it will be much faster and appeal to my short attention span.

Hi Sorastro! Just popping in to say thank you for these really amazing Legion painting vids. I held off of painting my starter set for the longest time because I found the Stormtrooper's white armour waaaaay to intimidating. Thanks to you and your tutorials, I now have an almost 100% painted Imperial force! The only change that I made was to switch out the Mechanicus Standard Grey for Celestra Grey as I found that I preferred the subtler shadows that it provided. So thank you! :) Now I just have to build up the courage to tackle Vader and my fall to the dark side will be complete! XD

Tried both the IA method, and the Legion method. The IA method of priming white, adding detail and using nuln oil is so much more effective for beginners like me! Drawing on those eyes and mouth pieces without looking like moustaches and sunglasses is so hard, but it's a walk in the park with Nuln Oil getting into those recesses. They call it Liquid Talent for a reason!
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 5 жыл бұрын
Hi MrUzzynator! I'm glad you found my IA approach to painting Stormtroopers useful. I agree - throwing on some Nuln Oil is about as easy as painting gets; I just thought I'd present an alternative approach in the Legion video for painters who dislike the work involved in highlighting the armour back up to white after applying the shade, which I know some new painters struggle with. I feel the more options we have, the better :)

Good not to do the old wash over the white. I followed your IA storm trooper guide and basically lost the will to live.. This looks much better though I can't say I'm in a rush to paint any more Stormies now! Great vid as always, you always inspire me to pick up the brush.

@Sorastro
@Sorastro 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Erik! It can be tricky for sure. If you can rest your wrists (and maybe elbows) to really stabilize your arms/hands whilst you work it helps a lot! I also like to use something small to mount the minis on too (stuck down with white tack).. 🙂

Having painted Stormtroopers for both Legion and IA, which method do you prefer in regards to time and final overall quality?
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill! It kind of depends on how clean you'd like them to look, but overall I think I prefer this method - especially for newer painters as it avoids the need to add any white highlights which can be quite hard work. Additionally, the grey or black lining - which is pretty optional - is somewhat easier on the Legion Stormtroopers due to the slight increase in scale and definition over the IA Stormtroopers :)

It looks like when you applied the white primer onto the grey primer it speckled a little bit, perhaps your paint in the airbrush wasn't thin enough or maybe that is just the nature of primer in an airbrush? I've also never been able to get a very good spray out of a rattle can that works well for a base coat. It's an interesting idea though and I'm excited to play around with it. Great video and awesome paint job!
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! If you're referring to 3:17 that's not white primer - it's white paint. The Model Air paints actually come pre-thinned ready for airbrushing but I do still add a couple of drops of air brush thinner :)

Nicely done, as always. I have been follwing your videos for ages now, and it cost me a lot of money since it started me on a way down to miniatures gaming and painting. ;) And I wanted to make one suggestion ever since I tried to paint my first stormtrooper: Find someone who has no or little experience with painting and let that person try to paint a figure based on one of your videos. And then point out everything the person does wrong. Because, while your videos show how should be done, I still have to make all my mistakes myself, if you know what I mean. A "mistake video" could be helpful, especially for beginners, and even intermediates. And while I'm writing: I would love to see your approach to a Runewars scion, i.e. your approach to painting bark. Just saying. ;) And lastly: Your Kingdom Death figures are the most impressive miniatures paintings I've seen yet. Anyway, I'm looking forward to whatever comes next.

Thanks Akuyaku! I'll give some thought to showing how to tackle mistakes, but it's usually just a case of touching things up as I go along.. I'm glad you liked the KDM video! I have the White Lion in my painting queue :)

I was thinking of mistakes like: priming too much/little, thinning colour too much/little, having too much colour on the brush and all these things beginners may struggle with. I found the IA stormtrooper one of the most difficult figures - white is a challenging colour and combining it with washes is challenging, too. Anyway, just a thought. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
