Almost no-one gets this, but the "Big Brother" thing is a show of respect, like how you might call a close family friend "Aunt" or "Uncle" even though they're not actually related to you. She was acknowledging his power and position over her, they're not literal siblings.

Fun fact the guy who plays the Husband , Yuen Wah was often used as Bruce Lee's body double in movies particularly Enter the Dragon. Yuen did all the scenes where Bruce Lee did any acrobatic fliips which was something Bruce couldnt do irl. Yuen was Peking opera trained so he could do it and he also was able emulate Bruce's way of walking and physical mannerisms (rumor was Bruce had one leg shorter than the other) and both had similar body types during that time. In terms of acting he was often type cast as the bad guy. Most recent he was the archer guy in Shang Chi.

The most curious thing is that this film is a really funny, parodistic and comedy movie, but at the same time it can perfectly show the various steps of the elevation of the spirit in the buddhism culture, together with the various steps of the mastery of kung fu and martial arts. Even the simple fact of him jumping on the eagle has a true spiritual meaning in real life. At the end of the day, it can be considered a pretty good movie for those themes, at least for their representation. Also some of those actors are true and expert martial artists °w° Here some more info: So, in this movie there are 6 levels of Kung fu. Each level representing a state of mind and the body. The first level being the physical level. This level consists of the “twelve leg shao lin kick” “Hong jia fist” and “wu Lang ba gua staff” these are what is called “Ming jin” or “visible strength”. This is the usage of the physical strength of the body, it is also the first level of Kung fu. The second level is represented by the two blind man. This is when Kung fu is no longer only represented through the body, but also as a state of “energy” or “an jin”; this in English could be described as a strike that cannot be seen. This state of Kung fu is extremely powerful as it can kill without subject even realizing it has been killed. However, this is soon to be over shadowed by the third level of Kung fu: “Hua jin” or “mix of the strike” this is when one has mastered the first two levels of Kung fu and is able to combine the two. They are able to dissolve the attacks of the first two levels of Kung fu with ease. This is represented by the “land lord couples.” Through “Tai chi” and “shi hou gong” or “lion roar”. Though this level of Kung fu is already extremely powerful, the fourth level of Kung fu is even greater. This state of Kung fu is when the user have managed to use the mixture of energy, mastered before from the first, second, and third state and create something even further beyond. There is no name for this state in China, since people like this are generally considered to be one of the greatest masters of it’s time. This state of Kung fu is represented by “huo yun xie shen” or the “world’s top killer”. However, there is still room for even beyond this state. State 5, this is when you break the limit of your body and reach even beyond the roof of Kung fu. This is represented when the main character stepped on the eagle (the eagle of which represents the pinnacle of Kung fu). Stage five is represented through “Ru lai shen zhang” or “the Buddha palm” (the Kung fu the main character learned as a child.) But what is even further beyond this level is level 6. He didn’t show this in this movie, but in the movie after the main character has spared “Huo Yun Xie Shen”, he asks the main character what Kung fu he was using. And after hearing this, the main character calmly responds with: “you want to learn this? I can teach you.” This is when he has reached the last stage of Kung fu. Where Kung fu is longer used to just fight, but only to communicate and grow. This is known as “fan pu gui zhen” and in many Chinese sayings “jiu jiu gui yi” (after nine you have one and zero) meaning after you reach the pinnacle you return to where you have started. This is regarded as the true pinnacle state of Kung fu, and only the greatest of masters may dream of mastering it. Since it would mean to leave all of what you had behind and return to where you have started. Truly something not anyone can do.

Thanks for watching in original cantonese language, so you get all the nuances and the intention from the voice tonation, as there will always be something lost in translation with dub. It was really fun watching your 3 reactions and enjoyment to this movie. Kung Fu Hustle (2004) is a masterpiece with a complex story that connects together very well from top to end, paced very well, and the music and sound effects are excellent, they purposely chose to record the music from live orchestra. Kung Fu Hustle (2004) has actually a lot of references to hong kong movies. It is not a parody but paying homage, giving respect and tribute to the inspirations of what Stephen Chow watches when he is growing up. Stephen Chow also said his idol is Bruce Lee. Stephen Chow put in a lot of hong kong and also western references, - Roger Rabbit style (lips bitten by snakes), - speedy gonzales (fat woman running), - the pigsty alley village is based on the lawless slum in hong kong, called Kowloon Walled City, ruled by gangsters.History traced this city back to the year 960 during the Song dynasty (960-1279). By 1990 the walled city contained 50,000 residents. It is demolished by 1994. - the landlady gesture in the car with the axe gang boss is exactly what bruce lee did, which is directly from classic bruce lee movie, The Way of the Dragon (1972). Look for "Bruce Lee knuckle cracks his fists from "Way of the Dragon" ". here : /watch?v=BQZG1qZNxUA - the powers of the 3 heroes are traditional powers, but the powers of the two blind musicians are mystical so they are more powerful than traditional powers. - each of the 3 powers, the kick, the staff, the rings are all from classic hong kong movies - the 2 blind musicians' powers is also from classic hong kong movie. Them using the zither instrument is reference to Deadful Melody (1994). The chinese literal translation of this title is "Six-Fingered Demon Musician". - the look of the 2 musician assassins with sunglasses is reference to The Blues Brothers (1980) looks. - When the landlord said, who knew the beast could unlock the chi flow, and then the landlady said, Stephen Chow is "The One", referencing matrix. - the white and black outfit that Sing (Stephen Chow) wears is what bruce lee wore from classic bruce lee movie in Enter the Dragon (1973). You see this outfit worn by Jet Li too in Fearless (2006). - spiderman reference, about with great power comes great responsibility line. - The Shining reference, when the blood pour out from the beast's cell. - This movie's time period is during the era of 1920s. - The Axe Gang is based on the real Axe Gang founded in 1921 in Shanghai around Japanese Occupation. - The top hats you see on the gangsters is a reference to the hats in Gangs of New York (2002) - Toad style is from chinese martial art novel. - The landlady and tenants is directly from classic hong kong movies, The House of 72 Tenants (1973). - The fierce landlady with the passive husband is also from another classic hong kong movie. - The buddhist palm is fictional and derives from classic novels and made into a classic hong kong movie and also has its own drama series. - the landlord style is tai chi that uses flows. so he looks slimy and has good evasion and transfer the energy flow directed at him to another direction. - the landlady scream power, called Lion's Roar, is also from classic hong kong movie, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber (1978). - the fight scene with many axe gangsters and them flying in the sky is reference to matrix 2 reloaded. - why Sing or landlady/landlord didn't kill, because the philosophies of different chinese martial arts is not about killing, but self defense, forgiveness, discipline, spreading love, not evil, etc. before the tailor dies, he said : "What are you prepared to do?" is a reference to The Untouchables (1987) dying scene. In the ending where the metal flower flew to the Ice Cream girl, it is a reference to Forrest Gump (1994) ending scene with Tom Hanks and the floating feather. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) took references from Kung Fu Hustle and also gave special thanks to Kung Fu Hustle in their credits. Watching Kung Fu Hustle (2004) is like watching the entire history of Hong Kong cinema. Anyone, especially those from Hong Kong, who can get the references will be extra blessed. In a 2010 interview, actor Bill Murray called Kung Fu Hustle "the supreme achievement of the modern age in terms of comedy". In 2021, American filmmaker James Gunn called it "the greatest film ever made".

For those who were confused, in Chinese martial arts there are real kungfu and fictional kungfu that derived from the wu-xia novels (martial art heroes genre) When you see them flying, that's actually what we called floating technic, is believed that ones gathered their internal "chi" on their feet to form a force then transfer immediately to upper torso to make them jump and float in the air. "chi" in fictional martial arts have many usage, you can gathered your chi to push out the toxin out of your body when you get poisoned, whether is by puking the toxin blood or from the wounded area, you can form a powerful hit by applying the chi, transferring chi to internal wounded person to make their blood flow smoother.

the kung-fu styles that appeared in the movie is a direct homage of styles and techniques used in classic kungfu novels and movies , and the buddha palm falling from the sky is referencing Buddha defeating sun go kong, the frog style is a ONE HIT KILL technique in the condor heroes novel, used by a mad kung fu master called the poison of the west

I think that the mix of wacky and seriousness is what makes it so memorable! If it was played completely straight, it'd still be great, but not as memorable as it is. In a way, it is played straight because the wackiness is the norm for the characters whom treat it seriously. That's just what I think, though.

The Helen of Troy is a bad translation, they assumed Western audiences wouldn't get the original reference, which is Little Dragon Girl and some other dude who are the heroine and hero in these old and very popular martial arts novella. They're both supposed to be super hot hence the extra level of the joke with the landlady/landlord being old and kinda cheesy looking.

Something I always find funny that people miss. During the fight with the musical assassins, the spirits they use as weapons become more visible based on the skills of the master they're fighting which is why the delivery guy saw none of the swords, the tailer could only barely perceive the attacks, the baker could see them a little better and the Landlords could see the full spirits... also they miss the fact that sharp notes cut while flat notes punch and a full strum creates the barrier.
