I feel like it’s definitely up to how good the gadget is. Because I had a girl I knew who used a utensil similar to the twirling fork in a previous episode, and while the concept itself is useful, the actual product sucked and was actually useless, it broke down easily, didn’t hold a charge, and would randomly start moving, vibrating and spinning after about three weeks of using for about 80 minutes a day (not continuously, but a total time of each meal for the full day). So, the product is only as good as the thing they test. An automatic stirrer is a great idea for anyone who can’t stand, stir for a long while, etc, but the one they showed only was able to stir in a middle circle, making that specific product from that company useless. The concept can be great, but the execution can be total crap.

Electric can openers are insanely necessary for those with mobility issues. Arthritis took my mother's ability to use her thumb to turn the crank on the hand can openers years ago, and cancer treatments have caused neuropathy in my sister to where she no longer has the dexterity to open a can. I realize this is "chefs review", but I do appreciate comments along the lines of "while this is useless for most people, I can see a use for specific people". And also "this just doesn't work, even for those who would need it". Being a chef doesn't mean you can't have empathy for others, or suffer an injury that might temporarily cause you to need assistive technology.

Shame it took them literal *years* to even acknowledge the people telling them disabled people exist (and even then immediately turned it into a joke. or flat out ignored it.)
@calonkat
@calonkat 5 жыл бұрын
@@3possumsinatrenchcoat Well, I don't think it was treated as a joke, and this is a "chef's review", so they are really looking at items for how useful they are from that point of view. Without being an expert in assistive technology, I'm not sure anyone could see how something might be useful to every type of disability, and expecting that would be silly. Just seeing how well the items work really is useful information (like the stirrer. I agree with the other commenter that it would be very useful IF IT WORKED!) But the reviews are appreciated and it can only help expand their audience to acknowledge the uses of items beyond those with the same physical capabilities that the chefs possess.

The "metal soap" kind of works, because metal ions do combine with some of the smelly chemicals left on your hands by e.g. garlic making them almost odourless. Having said so, rubbing your wet hands on a stainless steel sink right after having chopped garlic works very well, maybe better than with this gadget

Its perfectly fine to use canned versions of tomatoes, beans etc as a chef. Tomato for example is great to can to preserve the ripeness to use in off-season, or simply when making tomato sauce in a pizzaria. You would have a hard time walking into a restaurant's pantry and not find any canned goods.

I'm going to keep on trying to suggest this, but (in addition to more Pass it On!), how about an African food week, maybe with an Ultimate Battle? It's so varied and unique and delicious! The best hot sauce as well as the most amazing lemon and spiced fish I ever had was from a Kenyan/east African restaurant. And Ugandan (or another west African country) food is to die for, esp the unique groundnut stews with fruit and greens. Including Ethiopian is a given, of course, but I think it'd be great to expose more people to the other cuisines in Africa as well! 😁

That's so funny. My mom has the spoon/spatula/measurer thingy and was SO excited about it. I've tried it and... meh. I'd rather just use a normal silicone spatula or an actual spoon, although the end of it is stiffer than normal spatulas, so maybe it would be better with mashed potatoes or cookie dough.

As far as the can opener goes, Ben was spot on. Automatic can openers are usually designed for people with dexterity or strength issues. As someone who can't open cans for those very reasons....I'd still rather just ask a housemate then have a gadget like that taking up space. I don't need cans opened that often anyways. But for someone who has hand mobility issues, lives alone, has the space, and really likes canned soup, this would be a great product! There are quite a few products like this as well as opening jars (not all are electric, some are just grip aids). So if anyone has a friend or family member who might benefit from something like that, look it up!

My partner bought the stirrer to try and honestly it is rubbish. Have tried it in pots of all sizes but if it’s going in anything thicker than tomato soup then it basically grinds to halt. Got the egg timer though, although I got it from the pound shop for a pound surprisingly, so they were rippped off for price and find it works really well.
