The United States incarcerates more of its people than any other country in the world. Sadly, our young people are hugely affected by this. But one program, Gateways, is working to pull kids out of this cycle of incarceration.
In many states, up to 80% of previously incarcerated youth will be rearrested and incarcerated multiple times in their life. With thousand of kids stuck in this cycle, it’s easy to see that something is broken in a system that is supposed to rehabilitate them. In this 3-part docu-series, follow activist Maya Mansour as she meets with currently and formerly incarcerated youth to hear about their experiences in the prison system and discover how one life-changing program is using education and compassion to pull youth out of this cycle.

the fact that you can learn about someone from a screen is incredible. I would've never known about these youths or this program if it wouldn't have been for you guys. the cred goes out to the ones who don't give up even do they go through stuff no one should ever have to go through, and to the people who give their soul to help others . More people should see this. you make more difference and give more help with less resources than any one.

This series really hit home for me. So many people take education for granted and don't try their best in order to make the best of what they are learning. When there are people who uses education as an outlet and as a way to better themselves in life. This really makes me wish, as a broke college student, I had the funds to donate to such a wonderful cause. Not only does it provide incarcerated youth the power of education but it allows them to make connections with mentors, friends and people they wouldn't have met otherwise.

+jennihawk wow, thanks for the support. We’re so glad you were able to connect with this. Even as a broke college student, there’s still so much you can do to get involved! Maybe there are education programs at detention facilities near you that need volunteers. Or you could organize your friends and family to write letters of support and positivity, and bring them to a local detention facility. Many of these incarcerated kids are not able to see their families this holiday season, so a kind word from a stranger can go a long way.

so true. ever since I started treatment for severe anxiety/panic, I'm using education as a form of therapy. I'm taking many different classes. it keeps my mind busy, active & productive. it's wonderful. can't get it through my head how some people take it for granted.

"If you can't go within, you will go without." The only way for all of us to live happily is to learn how to love ourselves. Some of us seek it from others and that is not possible. While we seek it from others we forget to give it to ourselves. Self love is within you. It is your power. We all need to learn this skill. Gateway is teaching these important members of our human family to love themselves. I like it.

And this...ladies and gentlemen...is why we have to be open armed and present with the youth in our community. People gave up on these kids...teachers, parents, family, churches, friends...and as a country we need to lift these kids up, show them they are important, listen to them, and protect them! We say all to often "not my problem", and that is why we have all these lost kids. Kudos to Gateways for doing what they do! Now I have to figure out what I am going to do!

Fundraising here is great. Has the program also looked into a small academic fee every semester from Evergreen students?

This is possible and it would come down to a school wide vote.

Thank you so much for sharing. As a person who works in the juvenile justice system in the state of Washington, this hit really close to home. I will share this video with my co-workers.

Privatized prisons are a big problem. In the USA people are making money off the prison system. That is horrible.
