I watched this when it premiered! Conan was back on TV and Soundgarden was his first musical guest to kick it off! I still get the chills watching this.

Why do people like him decide to take their own life? That we'll never know for sure but I hope they know from wherever they are how much they are missed and appreciated.

Mental illness is complex and not necessarily about choice. He might not have understood who he was or what he was doing. "Happy" people can all of a sudden self harm, sad people can live long lives without getting close. Stable people can have episodes exacerbated by new medications or a multitude of factors like age, fatigue, lack of sleep etc.. Things that are always changing. The same can be said about underlying conditions that you may not perceive yourself because of how you cope with them but can be deadly if you don't take care of yourself. Victims of suicide probably once thought the same, that they would never relate to such a terrible state of mind. Your personality, your desires and actions are a product of your mental health and that can be compromised, same as any other organ, leaving you unaware and irrational. Cornell was touring too much when he died and had even likened himself to Neil Young, in being eager to meet the expectations of performing most of his catalogue live with original members (across different bands) as well continuing solo tours and recording constantly. He was getting older, I believe he'd mentioned having insomnia and probably dealt with some other issues like depression and potential prescription abuse. It's worth noting though. He was well reputed for being a sober, fit and steady family guy. You can easily see that. Apart from drinking when he was younger he avoided drug use. He just needed rest and ideally some help. He looked increasingly exhausted during the last two years of his life. It's just very sad, he was very loved and regarded by many to be the greatest living rock singer - add to that his intellect, talent, consistency and creativity. He was a true phenomenon.

He didn't do himself in..he was black widow "suicided".
