Once you have logged into SoundGym, you can choose the listening skills you want to improve. There are 7 to choose from: frequency recognition, compression and dynamics, sound location and stereo impression, distortion and sound quality recognition, detect EQ filter types, detect gain level differences, and set delay time accurately.
Once you have chosen which skills you want to improve, you are given a series of games to play that will help you hone your skills! These games and training programs are curated by sound experts, and will improve your core listening skills and having you sounding like a pro in no time at all!
Members will be a given a training program that is based on the skills they want to improve. In addition to this, you can play games individually to hone different skills than the ones in your program, or if there is a particular skill you want to spend extra time on. In these games you will be given points when you get questions correct, and be given progress indication so you can track your growth.
You will also be able to collaborate with other members. As a member, you will be able to create music, record, mix and master, and get feedback from other SoundGym members which will also help to improve your skills as a producer and engineer!
I have never used a program like this to improve my skills before so it was a lot of fun! All of my training came from on-the-job experience but I love how this allows you to improve your skills on your own time, from the comfort of your own home. The games were a lot of fun to play and will definitely be useful in further developing my skills! I definitely recommend checking out SoundGym as it is a great learning resource!

A few months ago I did a 1 month membership where I practiced every day. Safe to say my listening skills dubbeld during that month. (Background: I had been recording and mixing a little bit over a year before the soundgym membership) I highly recomend soundgym for everyone who is relatively new to recording and mixing. Best 20 dollars ever spend 😉. Btw: Great video Warren, thank you for always providing amazing content to us.

I was using a more basic free version of this and quite enjoyed it. The free version is limited in that you don't get as many games to choose from but it confirmed alot of how my ears work and there was some real curve balls which helped me to understand what I am actually hearing and what I'm percieving in terms of frequencies and dynamic levels in instruments and music. It has definetly helped my audio listening skills for mixing. I am working in PC Box mixing with Headphones and Abbey Roads Studio 3 so very practical to use the same phones while doing these listening exercises in SoundGym. 👂🎧🎶

@MichaelGilboe
@MichaelGilboe 4 жыл бұрын
Considering this is quite a "niche" product, I found the price quite reasonable. I remember paying more than $100 20 years ago for "ear training" books that came with a CD that was far less that what is offered here. This isn't a service I imagine people are staying with forever, so they need to charge enough for people to get their value out of it after 3-6 months. I think they are pretty darn fair. I'm fairly experienced, and I think I have a pretty good ear, but I also believe that learning is constant. This could be a good "brush-up" for some forgotten things.
@ignite137
@ignite137 4 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelGilboe I saw that you are replying to me, so here is my answer -> I compare this to recent software programs, not to ear-training Cd's or other offered services. This is a client-server based system, that is based on a service they offer. This program is absolutely decent! But what i said before, compare this to current software content, it's quite pricey. That's my opinion.

I did a fun ear training like this a few years ago. It was with a free app/web app made by Phillips called "Golden Ears". It was a very similar format but not gamified at all like this. It just had the level of bronze, silver or gold that you could achieve based on how well you did and then you were done. This looks way more fun and can see it being extended with music in other genres or with other types of instruments to make it more challenging. It's a quicker way to train an ear than working maybe since you'll get a variety of stuff and you can be lazy on your laptop just playing it like a game as you said :-) I might have to get this but I'll wait to see if I won the lifetime membership first :-)

Went through Berklee's RP&E & Electronic Music/Synthesis majors in the early 70s.. I have no memory of anything aimed at ear teaining in either discipline. If you weren't wealthy enough to build your own studio. Then it was the long winding road of internship, assistant, engineer, producer.....

I'm more curious about the higher difficulty levels, where the differences are not as emphasized. And also I'd like to know if there are examples where it does an A - B comparison and you have to say IF there is something applied to the track or not, similar to a blind test to see if you actually can trust your ears or hear too much with your eyes. For an inquisitive mind like me I can test and use the vast majority of these things myself, and I also am not sure if certain things are of that much use? For example, why would I need to hear if a delay is 120 or 200 ms? What would that be useful for as producer?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 4 жыл бұрын
Khunvyel marvellous question! Yes, there is tests for instance where they play 0.5 dB differences and a 0db no adjustment and you have to see if can hear the difference! The EQ difficulty increases tremendously narrows dramatically as well. If you run through the basics quickly it moves to a much higher level
