Chorus:
She use ta be my girl
She use ta be my girl
She had a charming personality
The girl was so right for me
She's my girl
And if I had the chance
Lord knows I'd take her back
As a matter of fact
Right away like today

As a 58 year old black man and musician, I have to make a controversial statement. Black men in 2023 (recording artists), do not sing about love and joy anymore. Period! That is so sad. I can't even think of any rapper/hip-hop artist in 2023, who's music is this joyful, positive and endearing as the O'Jays. It's not even close. Also remember that the O'Jays were "young black men" too, when this song was written and performed on Soul Train. It's an honor to have been an "impressionable" black teenage boy back then. All the R&B black music stars had a positive vibe and energy that shaped all of us for the better. I can't even imagine being a 14 year old black boy in 2023, and being shaped by rappers/hip-hop artists rapping about "bitches/hos/niggas". Yikes! I'll take a pass. In closing, this is a great memory, and the O'Jays really show how it's done here. Amazing music and performance! I know all you haters out there are going to come after me and say rap and hip-hop is the same "vibe" as R&B in the 70s. Wrong! Once again, it's not even close! Cheers, Sam.

Yes words and lyrics, made sense, told a story, talked about so much love, now this cursings and over sexed nonsense, repetitive nonsense. I heard a song some young girl sang joyfully about going to the abortion clinic, I was taken aback on that mess. And to think some parents play regularly this nonsense around their children😩

I m 58 too and love all those Black groups artists like O'Jays The Spinners Manhattans Temptations EWF Lionel Richie etc etc whose music and words were enjoyable...as it was for Black females groups too Pointer sisters Suprêmes Sister Sledge Natalie Cole Marlena Shaw etc etc. Now I don't see anything being at their stage.... In the 70's I was very impressed by this music because my brother often went to the States for his job and came back with vinyls.... And it was my turn in the late 80's I heard so much of this groups on the radios while in San Diego for my studies

He was recruited by the O'jays after William Powell died of cancer. He did several albums with them & stayed 17 years with O'jays. It was a pleasure to experience this time and era of music back then the rhythm and vibes were definitely on point music these days will not compare to the great music of artists from back in the day they gave u a performance now all u hear is negativity in the words violence crime and death just my own opinion.Barbara Fogg

I grew up watching whatever tv channel had motown shows 9n and tried not to miss any, my late mother told me all the stories of the motown stars and the dances they did. She helped me embrace My soul so much she didn't sugar coat anything either i appreciated all that to this day thanks Mom ❤️✊ you were the best!!!

This is an easy to listen to kind of song. It makes you want to sing along with them. Such a smooth flowing and delightful song beautifully sung. This is what The O’Jays do with passion and exuberance. Absolutely lovely 🥰 Perfection.
