This is one of the greatest soundtracks ever. It certainly is in terms of films centered on the Hollywood mystique or about famous Hollywood figures, for no other effort in that regard comes even close to evoking the quiet desperation and loneliness that some of the greatest film stars, even in our own time, experience at the peak of their stardom. However, in Joan Crawford's day, these were 'deities' who lived in real-life snow globes of their own creation, and whose public image was to mirror the domestic 'fantasy' they had crafted for themselves to suit their fans' expectations. In the days before the social media craze, this was the only reality that fans were privy to, and thus the only reality that mattered, i.e., that of a star who had it all: career, home, and family! Joan Crawford's life ultimately became the quintessential personification of this myth, the perfect evocation of this fantasy, of this tireless drive for complete and total perfection, of a life utterly devoted to and 'lived' for her fans' pleasure. Her personality was indeed tailor-made for this kind of scrutiny. However, in the end, the image of happiness and bliss gave way to the ultimate heartbreak of a life lived alone and with almost no one else who could even relate to what it must be like for someone so instantly famous, that they cannot get away from their own fame monster. So, what else could she do but make peace with it and resign herself to living in her own snow globe; what we today might call a 'bubble,' perfectly insulated from reality. That's the kind of evocation of sadness that this soundtrack conjures up, an evocation perfectly glamorous and gorgeous to behold, but one perfectly sad and lonely at the same time. Fame is a lonely place to inhabit, one seemingly made for perfectly beautiful people and Crawford gave her fans that illusion every single time she stepped into the outside world. That titanic degree of commitment to a role, to an image, to a certain public and private life ultimately became the only reality that mattered to her as well, precisely because that is the only reality she knew. This soundtrack speaks to every single one of those elements: the beauty, the joy, the glamour, the sadness, the heartbreak, the dread. A kind of Sunset Boulevard for our own generation about a Hollywood deity who became a martyr to her own fame and stardom. I honestly feel that Joan Crawford's life is the perfect vehicle for understanding that thing called Hollywood in all of its incarnations and this soundtrack drives that point home beautifully and effortlessly. Thanks for sharing it with us, Soundtrack Fred!

“Mommie Dearest” was received with very mixed feelings when it came out in 1981. It dealt with the life of Joan Crawford, a golden figure of Hollywood’s golden days, based on her adopted daughter’s biographical book. Faye Dunaway’s portrait of the star in the picture was pretty well received, although based on Christina Crawford’s mainly negative perspectives. The cast received numerous negative-awards, such as worst screenplay, worst movie, worst director and so on, but today the movie is often called a classic. A different kind of classic, with very little and subtle appearing music by one of Hollywood’s finest composers: Henry Mancini, who put some effort and soul into the score. Enjoy!

This musical score is one of the finest ever composed for a film. I don't know if it won an Oscar, but it should have. As for the film, it ended up becoming something much greater than could've ever been imagined, the epic cult film to end all cult films.

The chord changes, the variations on the theme, the soaring strings.....just absolutely beautiful! Now hearing this full suite has taken it to a whole new level, thank you so much for uploading this piece, much appreciated.

I found this film extremely entertaining even though die hard fans of Joan Crawford were appalled. It's drama but at the same time it is a dark comedy which you have to see it in a manner not literally believing that it is her, even though her daughter wrote the book. The soundtrack is great!

Best track in this is She's Drunk/First Kiss, or something to that effect. i'd been wanting to get the music by itself forever, I 'd get irritated by Faye Dunaway scoffing when she's trying to stand up as the other two are hoisting her out of bed 😆 - I just roll when carol Ann is really patronizing Christina as mommie moans in the background, "God, Christina daaaaahhling"

I adore Joan Crawford. Not one word of Christina’s ridiculously contrived book could ever make me hate Joan. Bette Davis might have been an actress, but Joan was a star. There will never be another like her. ⭐️

it's a shame, really, that music this beautifully composed and just about mood=altering, that should have been an addition to a great film, yet has to suffer the burden of being attached to a stinking pile of shit which is this movie. I feel bad for Faye Dunaway, Diana Scarwid, Henry Mancini, even the great Howard DaSilva (LB Mayer).

@@carlosed-vd7fj Don't get me wrong. I have the Hollywood Royalty DVD and I love the John Waters commentary, and it is a fun movie to watch. I've seen it countless times, but I don't take this movie in the slightest bit seriously. This is one of those talk-back-at-the-screen films. I once went to a screening on Mother's Day and the audience went insane and started cheering her on when she brandished the wire hanger, even counting every time she pounded the poor kid with it. 😆😆 Perhaps I was being too harsh when I called it a stinking pile of shit, but I was just coming from the fact that it didn't represent Joan Crawford as a human being much less an actress. There was only a hint of background information and exposition on her. After I saw it the first time I told people what a turkey I thought it was, but when i imitated it, I couldn't get if out of my mind, went back again, laughed my ass off, and just kept it up, thanks, in part, to the score, the cast, the very look of the film itself. It's beautifully shot, but all we see of Crawford herself is this OCD maniac who just loves to terrorize her daughter😅.
