The South Africa national cricket team toured the West Indies in April 1992. The tour marked the first-ever official Test and One Day International matches between the two teams. The tour consisted of three One-day Internationals and one Test match against the West Indies. All four matches were won by the West Indies. The West Indies had been unbeaten at Bridgetown for the last 57 years, while South Africa was playing their first Test match against the West Indies. The two teams never faced each other prior to 1969-70 (when South Africa was exiled) because of the shameful Apartheid policy in South Africa.
The West Indies were led by a new captain in Richie Richardson, while his opposite number was Kepler Wessels, who became the 13th player to play Tests for two countries - he had earlier played 24 Tests for Australia between 1982-83 and 1985-86. Disappointingly, this historic Test was witnessed by a few people, numbering only about 6500 across all five days. The reason was a Barbadian protest against the team selection policy - Anderson Cummins’ exclusion from the team to be precise. It also meant that most of the local public missed an exciting game of cricket.
The West Indies were in a transition phase as the greats such as Vivian Richards, Gordon Greenidge, and Malcolm Marshall had retired. Yet they were strong enough and in addition, they had history on their side. The South Africans meanwhile would have been glad just to play Test cricket and they quickly adjusted to the world stage again. They had marked their return to international cricket with a one-day series in India five months back, but this was their first Test since they blanked Australia 4-0 at home back in 1969-70. The Test match was South Africa's first since their return to international cricket, and so 10 players were making their Test match debuts (Kepler Wessels had previously played for Australia). For the West Indies, 3 players made their debuts - Jimmy Adams, David Williams, and Kenny Benjamin. The selection of Benjamin, in particular, had been a contentious issue. The Barbados crowd had expected Anderson Cummins, a Barbadian and a local favorite, to make his debut in this match in front of his home fans. However, the West Indian selectors opted for Benjamin instead. As a result, many fans chose to boycott the match in protest.
South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first. The West Indies had reached 219/3 but collapsed to 262 all out. Notable contributions came from Keith Arthurton (59), Desmond Haynes (58), and Richie Richardson (44), and Richard Snell picked up 4 wickets for South Africa. South Africa batted throughout the whole of the second day and into the third, racking up a score of 345 all out. A century from Andrew Hudson (163) formed the backbone of the innings with some support from Kepler Wessels (59). Debutant Jimmy Adams used his part-time spin bowling to pick up 4 wickets.
In their second innings, the West Indies scored 283 all out with help from Brian Lara (64) and Jimmy Adams (79*). Allan Donald and Richard Snell took 4 wickets each. This left South Africa requiring 201 runs for victory.
After the loss of two early wickets to Curtly Ambrose, half-centuries from Kepler Wessels (74) and Peter Kirsten (52) steadied the South African innings. However, after Wessels' dismissal to Courtney Walsh, South Africa collapsed from 123/2 to 148 all out as Ambrose (6 wickets) and Walsh (4 wickets) demolished the rest of the batting line-up. Four players were out for ducks, and after Wessels and Kirsten, the next highest score was only 4.
Curtly Ambrose and Andrew Hudson were jointly named Men of the Match - Ambrose for his match-winning spell of 6/34 and Hudson for his 163.

I remember this match so very well as an 18 year old in Jamaica. We were all convince that the Windies were going to lose a test series for the first time in decades. And then along comes Ambrose and Walsh to the rescue. Wonderful memories. Hit the like button if you remember watching this match on the last day.

Fantastic pair man..........which is why I said that the previous generation was better than this one. You have seen Walsh ad Ambrose make batsmen in the 90s who went on to become legends in the 2000s struggle badly.

Was too young for this but i had always heard my parents talk about it: the Bajan boycott, the 90 something runs an all white SA team( nothing is wrong with an all white SA team but the optics were contreversial as Apartheid legislatively had not ended) with 8 wickets in handagainst a team that was the embodiment of apartheid's repudiation. And Walsh and Ambrose blew SA away. Allan Donald used to say that Ambrose destroyed attacks when it mattered, when everything was on the line.

There is some serious historical revisionism going on in this video that needs to be called out. There was no "rebuilding" of cricketing ties between old foes "renewing" hostilities. This was the FIRST test match between these two nations. The introduction shows Jamaican supporters not protesting against SA's reintroduction into cricket, and Adam Bacher insisting that this is a good thing, and a sign that South Africa has successfully left "apartheid" behind. Again, paints the wrong impression that perhaps South Africa couldn't play the West Indies earlier because their supporters objected to something called "apartheid" that SA practiced earlier, but that's all in the past, so it's all good now. Let's get to the cricket. It was South Africa's choice, under the apartheid regime, to not play any team that wasn't 100% white. This is what the word "apartheid" means. It's ok to demonize a word, and then attempt to move on past the uncomfortable bits, but in the interest of not repeating history, it's meaning must not be forgotten.

I remember it well ...I was on tour in Barbados at the time ...watched all but the last day at the oval ...but ...what's not commonly known is tgat the night before the last day the SA cricket team inc coaches were at the harbour lights nightclub ....some remained drinking with us until the wee hours ...not taking anything away from Courtney or Curtley ...but it was a shameful display of arrogance by the SA team ...who were great fun btw

Brother would you pl upload following odi pak v sl 17th match heighlights from wc1987 and srilanka v wi 14th match 1987wc. In 1st one selim malik scored century and abdul qadir bowled brilliantly and 2nd one i mentioned srilanka faught bravely but lost by 25 runs.both are not available in you tube .thanks

South Africa weren't informed that Kensington oval does all sorts of strange stuff on day 5.....most teams chasing a moderate to substantial total there don't win
