Changed cricket forever. Fantastic concept and incredible final match. The Aussies got to the ground at 8 am and were still there at 9 at night. Imran , Grenidge, Richards ,Andy Roberts and many other great players started their climb to stardom, Sri Lanka entered big cricket. The game itself was a ripper. People forget Rohan Kanhai's innings which set up the West Indies innings. Roy Fredericks hitting a huge six but accidentally hitting the stumps with his foot , a year later in Australia Fredricks hit one of the best centuries ever played in Australia. Clive Lloyd won the game but he should have been caught by Ross Edwards who probably only dropped one catch in his whole career. Helped set up the West Indies for their dominance after the lessons learnt from their tough Australia n tour later that year and more importantly gave pride and joy to all the West Indians living in South London and the U.K .

I was there with my dad. First time I ever heard the word 'excruciating' was in reference to the old boundary wooden benches (now at Twyford School nr. Winchester). It was definitely more comfortable on the grass just inside the rope. Lillee was fielding right by us, chatting to the crowd. I remember him feigning relief at Fredericks' dismissal and making everyone laugh. Someone said he'd hit the ball so hard it ended up in the dressing room. The old man always insisted on taking the family's best China to Lords. I guess you could say he had a sense of occasion. I had to carry it all staggering down Lissom Grove. But we always had a good lunch. Dad was a man of Kent. Such a great side; Knottie Underwood Ealham Luckhurst Asif ... Canterbury and The St Lawrence as close to an earthly paradise as could be in the early seventies. Halcyon days treasured and never forgotten. Lords had to eventually ask dad to retire from stewarding. He was 82! Took it with good grace like a true cricketer. Love you dad!

Thank you for that memory! This match My Dad and I were at the barbers getting trimmed. Then we drove home for the Aussie innings. We only rented a colour TV in '74, same time my Dad bought a car from where he worked at Ford's Dagenham. Tests he'd watch during the day after working nights and I'd watch with him in the summer holidays, making him tea. He used to like Kanhai so Kanhai became my favourite too!

My pleasure AMA. I also remember a West Indian supporter with a hand bell. He was wearing at least a couple of large rosettes and ringing this bell shouting his head off. Going round the boundary preaching to the crowd. The patois was thick. This was before the match started. I got his autograph. Dad reckoned it said Mr. Simpson.

The bit of the story I missed (because it's still painful) is that with Lords descending into total anarchy and the light distinctly murky dad decided we had to go catch the last Greenline home. I still remember my incredulity but followed him out into St John's Wood leaving Thompson and Lillee on the tip of destiny. Watching them now leaning on their bats, they were the coolest people in the whole place. Years later I asked him why and he shrugged saying there was no other way of getting home.

Watching in January 2023 in San Francisco, California, USA on you tube, in colours, the lords grounds, very delighted to see alrounder skipper Clive llyod receiving world cup from HRH Prince Phillip in 1975. I was then around 15 years old, never imagined the cricket test match can be so beautiful in colors. In delhi india colored TV came in 1982 Asian games in delhi. I was in Kuwait with my father. My father sent National Panasonic, made in Japan tv to my elder brother, my mother & sister from Kuwait to Delhi. My elder brother who was doctor, has to take import permission to get tv custom duty free facility given to indians by pm Mrs indira gandhi to get colored TV sets from family members living abroad to watch asian games 1982 held in delhi india.. The todays main thrilling moments were to see great legend sir Greig chappel of kangaroos Australia batting. Amazed to see batsman playing pacers on both sides, without safety gourds. Legend sir Greig chappel larer become coach for indian cricket team & was become a household name as Chappal, a common name in hindi language for sleepers. Mr Greig chappel has to resign due to then dirty politics of indian cricket players. Thrilled to see pacers Lilly & Thompson. Thanks to you tube & Samsung tab & great American technology to have all world in our hands. Sanjay bahal at San Francisco California USA from New Delhi.

1996 cricket world cup is the most unique world cup ever played among the 18 cricket world cups till date ( including 6 t20 world cups). Below are few facts : 1. Only world cup to be won by a co-host nation. 2. Only final in which both captains were left handed batsman 3. Only final match to be held in pakistan 4. Pakistan is the only country which hosted a world cup final without hosting a semi final match !!!! 5. Only final to have a century in a success full chase. Arvinda di silva scored 107. 6. Only time world cup trophy was handed over by head of a state. Benazir bhutto the then PM of Pakistan handed over the trophy to arjuna ranatunga. 7. 1996 world cup is the only tournament in which both finalists despite being in the same group never faced each other in earlier stages of the tournament. Australia did not go to sri lanka for its pool game due to security reasons and sri lanka was given 2 default points 8. Arvinda di silva is the most productive man of match player with 107 runs 3 wickets n 2 catches 9. Sanath jayasurya is the least productive all rounder to win player of series award 10. You cannot add T20 WCs with ODI WCs. Its like adding apples with oranges, it undervalues ODI as a game.

That was from 60overs. Imagine the scores today if ODIs were 60 overs. 500+ Harry Carpenter seemed to think 291 was almost impossible.

The current record is 481 from 50. Assuming a last 10 over thrash, close to 600 would be possible off 60, the Windies would lose by over 300 runs.

West Indies had a golden chance to make it 3 in a row in 1983 when they were still the best. They floored the oppurtunity. 1987 with Richards leading the side and shocking elimination in early stages. Unfancied England beat then in both league matches only to lose to a then weak Australuan team in the final

That all changed after 2 infamous events in the 80's. During the '82/83 Ashes a fan came onto the pitch and Terry Alderman busted his shoulder - rugby tackling him to the ground. He was out injured for the rest of the series The other incident happened on the last day of the 1st Ashes test of 1985 at Headingley. Allan Lamb hooked the winning runs but Geoff Lawson, trying to catch the ball, was bundled over by the crowd coming onto the pitch. Although unharmed the Australians were, needless to say, not very pleased. The days of fans running onto the pitch stopped shortly afterwards.

That was still allowed in England until the year 2000. I ran onto the pitch at Edgbaston in the year 2000 when the test match against West Indies ended. The next year, in 2001, they stopped people doing it. You can see the crowd are still allowed to run on at the end of the second test match in 2000 at Lords on this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qqeemJZhndipqaM.html
