Arsenal FC moved from south to north London. Here's why!
👇USE CODE FOOTY15 AT CHECKOUT👇
foco-uk.sjv.io/c/3507195/1402...
Arsenal began life in Woolwich as Dial Square. They later changed name and stadium a few times.
In this video I'll take you to their historic birthplace south of the River Thames (now the Dial Arch pub). From there we'll explore the old Manor Ground as well as Highbury and the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal have a wonderful history!!!

That was great! I lived near Highbury in the mid-late 80s when George Graham was manager. If you wander around the Highbury neighbourhood you'll find many small businesses, pubs and cafes named after the club. Arsenal may have started in Woolwich but it's put down roots in Highbury.

Tottenham Hotspur didn't become a London club until 1965 when it became a borough of London. I believe Tottenham Hotspur was in Middlesex not London. So the actual fact is Arsenal was not only a London club before them, but also a North London club before them aswell.

I'm an Arsenal because I grew up on Plumstead common in the 90's ( 1990's not 1890's ;) ), right across the road from where Royal Arsenal's first ever ground was. Spent most my childhood around those barracks before the overhaul started in like 2003 onwards, most of it was an empty shell still damaged from Luftwaffe bombs right up until the turn of the century when they decided the right thing is to renovate but still keep the history alive and im all for it. Up the Gunners!

When you mentioned the money troubles arsenal had I thought you were gonna mention the help they received from rangers all those years back. Rangers bought 2 shares in the club and played 3 games with around 60,000 fans each and all proceeds went to arsenal to help them out. Just a fun fact 😇

@@linkpie4174 It was a nice little bit of history and tradition. One easily overlooked and it is so sad it's gone. Watched your video last night. I am absolutely blown away by the history of Arsenal FC. Shame the pitch at Highbury is no more however good to see the buildings been preserved even though has been massively redeveloped. I have a soft spot for Arsenal. The early 2000s from Arsenal were my favourite times likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp etc. Sam I hope you come back over to Perth Scotland again. I do recommend Scone Thistle. If you ever decide to go to a Scone Thistle game at their home ground, let me know.

Henry Norris, the then Fulham chairman bought shares in Arsenal in 1910 - became chairman, and tried to merge the 2 clubs but was blocked by the football league. He then looked to move Arsenal to another site and chose Highbury. Also, while he was Fulham Chairman he was offered Stamford Bridge but declined as the rent was too steep so the owner Gus Mears founded Chelsea FC.

Some Spurs fans love to remind Arsenal fans about that but conveniently forget or didn't know that in 1908 Spurs finished 7th in the Southern League but were elected to the football league the same way Arsenal were elected to Division 1 i.e by voting members of the football league management committee. Bradford Park Avenue finished 13th in the Southern League that season and were also elected. THFC alleged bribery when Arsenal were promoted but apparently, there were rumours that THFC 'persuaded' Stoke City not to apply for re-election after finishing bottom so they could take their place. I expect there were lots of other back handed deals done around that time.

Nice work and effort. So much more to the story though, including the now defunct 'Clapton Wanderers' and the hapless THFC, petitioning the League and courts to block Arsenal's proposed migration to Highbury. Despite the embarrassing end to his Arsenal managerial tenure, George Graham should not be overlooked. Like Wenger later on; during the prime coaching period of his career in the late 1980s-early 90s, he also brought Arsenal back to being title and cup winners: winning 2 top division titles - including the legendary 2-0 deciding win at Anfield - FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup Winners Cup as he developed youth players (many of whom went on to have stellar careers) alongside more senior players...COYG!

I'm an Arsenal fan and I disagree with this sentiment that Arsenal fans should'nt have treated Wenger so badly towards the end. In Wengers last two seasons we finished 5th and 6th respectively the last season was particularly bad. Wenger was a great manager for Arsenal but unfortunately he long overstayed his welcome and I believe the club has suffered as a result. We had opportunities to get managers like Klopp and Guardiola but choose to stick with Wenger's outdated tactics instead. This has set us back years.
@rdw1970

Agree. I felt Wenger was given far too much power after David Dein left and he was unable to (or didn't want to) get out of his comfort zone and take another challenge. The owners didn't care because he was still regularly getting top 4 (with zero chance of winning the CL in his last few years). Look at the absolute dross he signed too - Silvestre, Squillaci, Gervinho, Chu-young Park, Andre Santos, Mustfi to name a few. The squad is slowly improving but we're playing catch up now.

Alan Shields Hamilton South Lanarkshire Scotland. I just see Arsenal as a London club I dont even think of Arsenal as North or South. Myb if I was a Londoner I would look at Arsenal differently but to me they are just a London club. I know a lot about the history of Arsenal I am big on sports history & social history myself. My understanding of why Arsenal moved North of the river is they wanted to gain a larger fanbase & this is a big part of the reason they had money troubles in the first place when they where South of the river as geographically in South London they where not in the best location catchment area at that point in history. I am a Chelsea fan now I dont particularly like Spurs or West Ham United but I respect both clubs & there history but Arsenal have always been a club I am not really fussed about as a club they stir absolutely no feeling in me what so ever to be honest. It was very cool to see the actual history locations in different points in Arsenal's history in the modern day though Sam. Keep Safe Sam & Keep up the good work.

Mate, the club have long said they’re doing a massive makeover of the outside of the Emirates. Fans have been involved with voting on the matter, and during the World Cup, they’ll be installing the new artwork/fixing the badge. Besides that, lovely video! I’m just defensive over that matter lol.

Cringe worthy how Spuds throw up Woolwich as if it’s an insult or will insight some form of annoyance. Facts stand that lot up the road have their entire trophy cabinet in their club shop, including the DVD of when they last won the league…. apparently it’s being reproduced in colour soon. You neglected to mention Spuds are from Middlesex, not London, and what use to be a swamp…. Not much has changed there.

Nice video again but you skipped the most controversial part, which is how Arsenal got their place in the 1. division in 1919 on behalf of Tottenham, which really ignited the rivalry. By the way, originally there were four statues planned outside The Emirates, but they had to skip the one of Robert Pires. It kept falling over! 🤣

Suggest you look up how THFC finished 7th in the 1908 Southern League but managed to still get elected to the football league.

@@rdw1970 Nothing controversial about that. We won the election by getting more votes than Lincoln, Rotherham and Southport. We had the better facilities and would thus draw bigger crowds and generate more money for the league. This was the then 2. division, not the 1. division, and our chairman wasn't later convicted of financial fraud and banned from football. Unlike yours.

@@WhiteHartDane TH received more votes than Lincoln in the 2nd ballot not the first which was tied. After the 2nd ballot, it was rumoured that Stoke's original resignation had been encouraged by TH who offered financial incentives for them to resign. Wouldn't surprise me if that was true seeing as TH had been expelled from the Southern League so were without a league to play in.

Best thing Arsenal did by moving to North London is that we turned it from white to red in an instant and all spurs fans are still bitter about it to this day.
