Fascinating post-match analysis here. I was waiting all along for Jimmy Hill to call out Graeme Souness’ lunge on Kevin Keegan. He got there eventually…much like Souey! Forty+ years on, I think Jimmy Hill’s basic contention - that too often players get booked for trivial offences while the seriously dangerous challenges go unpunished - remains true.

Agree. Silly that you can be booked for taking off your shirt or swearing but thuggish leg breakers go unpunished

Dave, Thanks indeed for extended highlights of this excellent First Division game between two bright attacking sides. Attractive too in that it featured perhaps the two greatest Liverpool heroes of recent times, Kevin Keegan and Kenny Dalglish. Great eventful game at the Dell and thought-provoking analysis as ever from Jimmy Hill!

Always a difficult place for Liverpool to go to but I loved The Dell. So unique with terracing in the upper tier behind the goal - and then that weird terracing along the side. Always a tough place - I remember after a win there in 1986 that I felt the league was on.

You should edit in a scoreboard for stoned people! This was amazing to watch again. I still hate Souness, always have. What a game! I am a Celtic fan with an English team lol. I started supporting Southampton about 81 or 82 I think, we had a clothes shop in far north of Scotland that got in really random football shirts off the back of a lorry and I fell in love with the silky two tone blue away shirt and bought it, I can't remember if it was Admiral or Patrick? It was hot merch because of Keegan. I am sure like every other Saints fan right now we'd love to be top two, but we are safe for playoffs, three losses are tough now but maybe a postponement will help. It's all about the run in, Leicester lost three as well.

It was the norm then. Give their best player a kick to try and intimidate them. An old friend who was a young reserve at Bolton told me the best player he played against was Bryan Robson, in a reserve game. He said in the first 5 mins, he let me know he was there. I could not get a grip of the midfield afterwards, he said. Always looking over my shoulder waiting for a tackle.

@Jackie-ji2sj
@Jackie-ji2sj Жыл бұрын
@@DaveWallerLFC take the money out of the Premier League, and ALL the foreign mercenaries would leave. They are not interested in British clubs, except for the money they can get. Whereas in the past, before money ended British football, you had British players who just wanted to play for clubs they loved. I remember them days, and it was far better.
@DaveWallerLFC
@DaveWallerLFC Жыл бұрын
If you took the money out of the Premier League all the best British players would leave too, like they used to when the money was in Italy and Spain. It has nothing to do with players caring about clubs. With a handful of exceptions players don't play for clubs because they care about them. They probably grow to care for the clubs they play for, whether they are British or foreign. You're making it sounds as though every player in the 80s played for the club they supported as a boy for their entire career. If that's your memory, you may (or may not - maybe ignorance is bliss) want to check if that was true.

This is true. Keegan tells the story in an early 80s autobiography. Liverpool had in fact, curiously offered him a player-coach position. Chelsea, then pushing for promotion from Old Div 2 with Geoff Hurst, part of Ron Greenwood’s England coaching team, were also in the running. It was thought to be a straightforward tussle for Keegan’s signature between Liverpool and Chelsea and then Southampton came out of nowhere.
