i did not realise the foundation role ww1 had on the independace movements in China and SE Asia. I had always thought it was ww2 - but thinking on it these movements all began before ww2. Was it similar with India and Burma? In Australia we celebrate ANZAC day and it signifies when we decided to stop grovelling to Britain and going it alone

@@wescormick2988 It was extremely similar. For India it was another milestone to independence. Both Burma/India would have significant populations that joined the Axis in anger for not having independence by the 1940's

WW1 still remains unknown to a large part of the global population. Its really unfortunate because the war has a lot of lessons to teach.

Nice video on a forgotten part of the world being involved in WWI. Your Thai pronounciations sounded like you trying to pronounce Slavic sounds (but hey, you tried, so I gotta give you props for that, a little more so than others who have done the same on KZfaq). Also kind of wished you covered nations like Burma, Laos, and Malaysia, (despite you adding Thailand and Cambodia, which was great as well) perhaps a part II? ;)

Some pretty good points you made, and you crucially pointed out how the First(and later, the Second) World War broke the perception of European and European origin people among many populations, shattering the myth that they were "destined" to rule over others. This is something quite a few popular retelling of both World Wars miss - they turned what were once powerful nations into neutered versions of themselves and showed that the Europeans in general were in no way special compared to the rest of the world. I would be interested to hear more about post Tokugawa Japan, in particular I would enjoy a very detailed take on various aspects of the Meiji era, as well as a history of industrialization efforts in Japan in general.

@@ThePacificWarChannel Awesome, looking forward to it. Is there any chance of you looking deeper into the Meiji era, or doing a general history of industrialization in Japan sometime later?

Totally agree as well as the difference in attitude re the aristocracy in Britain after WW1, Prior to WW1 the landed gentry employed large numbers of staff for basically board and food.

I was looking forward to seeing Burma mentioned but I guess there was not much. Far as I know the Burma rifle and sappers were sent to Mesopotamia and Palestine during WW1.

Yup, I could have mentioned a few other nations for limited combat/non-combat roles, but there was too much =(.

I thought it was discusting how that priveledged colonialist woman was throwing crumbs to those poor Vietnamese kids like they were birds with a smile on her face.

Vietnamese Veteran would face even more discrimination against them by the colonial authority especially those that have PTSD and Disabilities from the war on jobs after the war. This heavily push Veteran toward crime syndicate and revolutionary movement which end as well as you expected for the Colonial government

Were there any Laotians who fought?

Yes, they fought for France, a bit hard to find information, but I found this at one point when looking up Tirailleurs Indochinois: Tirailleurs Tais Ethnic Taï from Sip Song Chau Tai and Northern Laos.

Wow.. Why the heck did Europeans bring war to S.E.A? That is why colonialism is so awfully ridiculous...
@robames1293

Europeans saw the colonies and colonial people as their possessions. Having a large population of expats. Canadians and ANZACs were stirred up to a fever of patriotism to aid our mother country, and were largely seen as rough and disposable by the British leaders although now there is a movement to prove otherwise.

@@RandomHockeyFan123 But the warfare wasn’t never in SEA or Asia. Let be honest here the German is the only power here in Asia against the British, France and Japanese. Of course it wasn’t main focus than Europe theater.
