Cornbread - Heirloom Recipe! All the tips and tricks you need to know to make perfect cornbread every time!! - The Hillbilly Kitchen. Cornbread has been a part of the American diet since long before we were a nation. Native Americans shared corn and the making of bread with this basic grain with the very first European settlers. This recipe and the techniques I share in this video are very similar and have evolved from their recipe.
Cornbread is called a "quick bread" because it is simple, easy and fast to make. So don't let anyone convince you it is hard :) Put God First!.
Ingredients:
1 cup All purpose flour
1 cup Corn meal
1/4 teaspoon Salt
2 teaspoons Baking powder
1 Egg
1 cup Buttermilk
1/4 cup Real butter
2 tablespoons Real honey

When you say "Cornbread," I think of my Grandmother, who was born in 1902. ALL of our meals with our grandmother included skillet cornbread. No sugar. In fact, most of what you cook reminds me of Froggie (her nickname; long story😉). I look forward to seeing her again, in heaven! God Bless you from Nashville!

I'm in kidney failure too. But my edema was solved by removing a particular medicine for my heart. So, I get to enjoy salt. I've got Congestive Heart Failure too. The medicine was removed by my cardiologist who had not liked what the hospital prescribed anyway. Now, I'm hunky dory, and my creatinine level is slowly decreasing.

My father and mother , were both from Eastern, Ky. Momma used to make cornbread in the skillet. I was looking around for cornbread recipes. After watching a few, I told the wife, I gotta see what the hillbilly says about cornbread, It’s in the oven. And I know it’s going to be good. I loved the easy fudge recipe you made, I thing it had 3 things in it. Yep. I made us some. It was so durn good. THANK YOU and P.T.L. 😊

Hi - I’m in Australia and corn bread hasn’t ever been a thing over here- a simple wheat flour bread called damper was the tradition since settlement from 1770 until now and it was (and still is) made in a cast iron “camp oven “ or what you call a Dutch oven. I just tried your recipe and it turned out perfectly and delicious- we can’t easily get corn meal here so I used polenta which may be similar- by the way, damper is traditionally served with butter and golden syrup spread on top and accompanied by strong black “billy tea” and is still enjoyed by many stock camps and cattle stations in the outback- thanks again

Mama did too. We were raised mainly in the north, so what we thought of as being cornbread was what Mama called "Yankee (sweet)" cornbread - that's all we knew, but we loved it, and always looked forward to when she made cornbread - she always cooked it in muffin pans. Now that we have been in the South (rather sad story) and have had a number of years of immersion into the Southern life, we have grown to love plain ol' (real, as Mama called it) cornbread, but those Yankee cornbread memories are a treasure to me all the same! 💗

@@Imokanurnot I'm from the Blue Ridge mountains in Appalachia, but years ago a man from Arkansas gave me the tip to try putting a tablespoon of honey in my cornbread and I tried it and haven't made cornbread without it ever since! It's not too sweet, but just enough sweetness to be delicious, and it makes the crust so crunchy and golden brown!!

Oh my, how you just conjured up powerful memories from my youth! 1967 I lost my mom to an auto accident; she was rushing home to give me my 1st Bday surprise party (10 yr old). Didn't make it. Dad's mom moved in to help raise me while he worked 2 jobs. Her cornbread is a cherished feast that nursed me thru bad times! She made it nearly every supper & some lunches, so leftovers were plenty. When I had trouble sleeping, her advice was to break up some into a 12 oz glass & pour milk over it as a night time snack. Always comforting to brought on needed sleep... 🌃 💤. 😇❤️

All my grandparents were born in the 1800's. My grandmother, my mother's mother, helped raise me from a baby until 4 years old after which my parents moved to California. First of all...sugar does not belong in Southern Cornbread. It would be like putting vinegar in your iced tea. My grandmother used Crisco a lot. I do not remember what brand of flour. She was poor so if I wanted a chocolate candy bar, she would give me some Cocoa powder and white sugar in a bowl I would stir with a spoon and eat. I miss her. One glorious day I will see her in Heaven and hear her sing her favorite song " Beautiful isle of Somewhere ". 🕊️😇❤️🙏

We always had to make two batches in our extended family father in law couldn't stand to drop a sugar in his we were kind of evenly divided down the middle on that one had to agree to disagree and just made 2. God bless you Becky and family and everybody else is listening

I just love, love, love this channel. Makes me so homesick for the mountains of NC. Raised in the Smokey Mountains & I sure do miss my Mama’s sweet cornbread AND my Daddy’s buttermilk cornbread. How many summer meals did we come together to eat cornbread & milk out of one of Mama’s depression era glasses? It was more like a dessert for us after enjoying a meal of greasy cut-shorts (type of green bean that I cannot find here in the eastern part of the state), sliced tomatoes - all picked fresh from Daddy’s pride & joy garden the same day. Plus Mom would add some fried potatoes, and maybe pork chops - sometimes we didn’t have a meat & sure did not need it for a delicious meal. In the winter, we’d have a huge pot of “soup” beans aka pinto beans that Mama had cooked on the wood stove all day, Daddy’s cornbread and follow it up with a glass of milk & cornbread. Dad had a couple of hives of bees & we would help him preserve many pints of sourwood honey & although Mama or Daddy never added it to their cornbread recipe, my parents & siblings (sister, 2 brothers) would pour some over their hot homemade biscuits or cornbread. I didn’t like honey frowning up because when we’d help Daddy harvest the honey, we’d get it all over us - especially in our hair. We didn’t have running hot water, and when Mama heated up 4 canners of water to pour into the tub, every other night was hair-washing night and I HATED IT. (LMBO - 🤣😂🤣😂) My Mama would let us play outside from daylight to dark, after chores were done of course, and we could get as dirty playing in that red clay dirt as we wanted to….BUT, my Mama didn’t believe in having dirty children at bedtime and she would SCRUB us from head to toe. When she washed my hair, she showed no mercy and after helping with the honey harvest….Lord help us - LOL. So I just decided that because of all of that, I didn’t Like honey….The mind of a child - FOTFLMBO!!!! May God richly bless you ALL, in HIS mighty way, each & everyday!! ❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️❤️

I know it’s not healthy, but sometimes I like to use a little bacon fat when making cornbread.

@@caw7007 that's what my doctor says! No veg oil except olive or avocado and use butter instead of marg .. not a problem, can't stand the smell of marg .. I don't care how poor I am, I will continue to purchase butter, if I have to sell my socks to afford it .. lol

There's an awakening for our Messiah these days. I look to God, not man for my life. I truly believe our generation is "chosen" for greater things. As to your videos, nice to see the "old way" of making corn bread. Its hard to fine cornmeal and cornflour here in the Northeast!

I am heading to my kitchen to make this corn bread immediately. I used to love the corn bread muffins that were aerved in one of the American coffee houses that we frequented on our trips to the U.S. Cant wait to experience that delicious flavor again. From Canada.

Try peanut oil instead of butter, and bacon grease to prime the cast iron skillet. 475 on the oven for :25. Freaking awesome!

For some reason I have never been good at making breads. I turned 60 this month and I’m a southerner. For heaven’s sake am I just never going to over come this bread making downfall? Its just time ! I ordered what I need and I have chickens for eggs, and I have honey and coconut oil. So I only needed 2 things. I’m going to put my best foot forward. And right now I have a broken foot. Lol ! First bone I ever broke in my life. So it took me 60 years. And this year I’m making cornbread. My husband will sure appreciate it. He’s working at a big job, he’s an electrician. Gods brought a big job just right out our back door. He drives about 10 minutes to work. It’s a blessing! So he deserves a really good meal in the evenings. I’m making cornbread for him and all the good ole foods we grew up on in Tennessee. A little different because we do eat gluten free. With less sugar. But that shouldn’t effect the taste. I thank you for always helping me figure out how to make good recipes. God bless you ! Leslye

My husband DOES NOT like sweet cornbread. But I've found through the years I've been cooking that just a little sugar in my cornbread batter takes the "bitterness" out of the corn meal. Also I now add some flour to the mix to lighten it. Thank you for the recipe and God bless!
