Perhaps the most famous locomotive in America is Southern Pacific 4449. The locomotive lives in Portland where it was rebuilt in 1975 for use on the American Freedom Train.
From the Friends of the 4449 web site:
On December 14, 1974, Southern Pacific 4449 was towed out of Oaks Park in southeast Portland, OR. and taken to Burlington Northern's Hoyt Street Roundhouse in what is now the Pearl District.
There, the 4449 was disassembled, inspected, repaired, and reassembled to pull the American Freedom Train in 1975-1977, a train full of historic artifacts that toured around the United States.
Over the course of 40 years, this steam locomotive and the crew that kept her operational has continued to pull officer specials for railroads, star in a Disney film, run excursion trains for the public, and return to Oaks Park during Holiday Express events.
Some of the same crew members who took part of the activities in 1974 continues to be involved today with a whole new batch of volunteers working to carry 4449 into the next generation.

Back in 1991? I was working as a school bus driver out of North Hollywood Laidlaw yard, when I saw the double-header of the 2472/4449 pulling the new Rio Grande Coach Cars, I can't remember the event, but it was cool passing by on the Coast Route out of Los Angeles, I was about 50 feet away as they past by, So Coool! Oh, there were also a few PV Cars behind the coaches.

P.S. You forgot the GS6 which they returned to the single headlight, I used to have a cassette tape of the 4449 blowing it's whistle and the sounds of it running. The other PA1 is in Mexico and hauls passengers, however the nose, I mean the number boards make it look like the trainmaster..

G'day, Toy Man! Great movie! Right-on!! Tough Guys (1986) Fun and nostalgic entertainment... plain and simple. "Indulgent" is the first word that comes to mind with this film. Lancaster, and Douglas play a pair of legendary, yet anachronistic criminals who find that after a thirty year stay in jail the world has changed almost beyond recognition. After being confronted with everything that the modern world (in 1986) has to offer from gay bars to the Genre of music known only as "Funk", the pair decides to make one final attempt to recapture the magic of the glory days, namely by staging 'the great train robbery'. For any fan of pre-Vietnam war American culture, this film is a nostalgic and fun as "H-e-double hockey sticks" ride, though it may come off as a bit esoteric to anyone else. Suggesting: Do yourself a wonderful favor and maybe pick-up a DVD or Blu-ray version. Thank you! Enjoy! :-) Cheers! 😊🎥❤️✌🏼

I remember the film, but never saw it. Need to find it and have a look see!! Douglas took darn near any project near the end of his life. I assume he no longer felt the need to "build" on his career. So he just did fun films. I remember one, mostly dreadful film where the high point is when a sea plane crashes in a lake in Alaska. Thing is it wasn't in the script. The plane was supposed to just land on the lake. And people get off. But OOPS. The plane crashed right on camera. SO they rewrote the script.

4449 is one of the most popular (and most photographed) steam trains in the world. It also has close to the largest online presence of any steam locomotive (Flying Scotsman and the Big Boy do as well). Having a big online presence is very important for any operating steam trains to survive in the long run. On a separate subject, will you ever do a video about the PRR T-1 Trust? The group building the 4-4-4-4 duplex 5550 from drawings?

It almost was not returned to service in time for Freedom Train duty. The boiler back sheet was heavily corroded and nobody involved at the time was able to repair it. They looked for and found a still living, and long retired, SP boiler maker, Joe Crumley. He had the needed knowledge and directed the repairs that led to the boiler passing inspection for service. It’s not that no one in the world knew how to fix it.. it was a matter of very little time to do the repairs and the necessity of having the repair done in place, in time. In 1970 Richard K Wright published ‘Southern Pacific Daylight, Trains 48 and 49’ the definitive book on the subject on the passenger trains and their locomotives. He personally inscribed a copy of the book as a gift to Joe, on June 28, 1975, referring in that inscription to Joe as the man who ‘Saved 4449’. I am the proud owner of that book, number 1977, that once belonged to Joe. Don’t ask.. it is not for sale. I have been offered massive money for it already many times. I also have the more rare soft cover “American Bicentennial Queen Engine 4449, “The Lone Survivor” “ also by Wright and from the Crumley estate, and personally inscribed to Joe, on May 12, 1975.

Jennifer WhiteWolf cool you have that book!!!! I have a fun book story. Karen is from Sanpete county Utah. A woman wrote a great book called life under the horseshoe. (Horseshoe mountain) Karen was teaching there and the governor came to present some students awards. And so a group of locals presented him with a copy of the book. About 20 years later I was looking for a copy of the book. Never had one. My brother had one and I wanted to find one. Onto the internet. After over a year one came up at a store in Sacramento. So for a stupid price I was able to buy it. On opening it there was the inscription to the Governor. The same book Karen presented to him almost 15 years before I met her. Cool stuff. And no I don’t want to sell it either!!

I have 2 copies of the bicentennial queen. The reason they were able to restore the 4449 was a dedicated individual who kept the journals lubricated. The original restoration was lead by Doyle McCormack. I met him on the first run to take on Freedom Train duty. He invited me into the cab in Sacramento and I got some great in the cab shots and got to blow the whistle. The GS series also had a air horn in addition to the whistle. GS stood for General Service.

Red Star Doyle was indeed a critical force in the original operation of 4449 and has been ever since. The Nickel Plate Road diesel locomotives are his. His father was an NKP engineer, and was on the NKP that Doyle was first certified as an engineer. As a huge NKP fan, it is a real bonus for me that those locomotives are in my back yard. During its many years of being stored outside before the idea of restoring her came up, there were indeed many who had hopes and vision that 4449 and the others could one day be returned to operation, and a concerted effort was taken to keep them oiled and to minimize the water damage. Without the unsung heros of the past keeping these oiled and as protected as possible, the restorations may have far more difficult or even impossible without herculean effort and cost.

However the upcoming us tour by 4014 may take it to Portland. If so they may stage that photo there in late September or October.

S.P. 4449 Beautiful in its Daylight colors and totally Awesome in it's American Freedom Train colors of 1975/1976. It brought the history of America to thousands of ordinary people that would never have a chance to actually visit the museums and places where American history was made. Of all the artifacts on display in the cars of that train, the one that ment the most to me, was the rocking chair of President Kennedy. Having seen pictures of him sitting in it in Life, and other magazines, to see it in person was great. 4449 is in my opinion, the most beautiful steam locomotive of all time. I only saw her in her Freedom Train colors, but have watched many videos on KZfaq. I only got to see her under steam on a dark stormy night as it left enroute to it's next display city. I still have my flattened coins that I placed on the track to remember the occasion. Happy July 4th and GOD BLESS AMERICA!

I have lived in Noo Yawk for most of my life and did not see such huge locomotives. The PRR was involved with using multiple smaller locos rather than large ones. NYC was using similar strategies with their trains which terminated at Grand Central Terminal. (Which was a terminal, not a station as so many mistakingly refer to it) Penn Station was fed by long tunnels running under rivers from New Jersey and from Long Island so steam was replaced by electric locos at each end, which limited the smog issues.

I got to ride behind 4449 on a trip home to Portland after it served on the Freedom Train. Hung out in the vestibule most of the way up the Sacramento River above Redding to Mt Shasta. The sounds of the loco echoing up the river canyon is one you do not forget. I had chased the same engine a year or so previously when it came south to travel across the nation to pick up the Freedom train just after its restoration. The Alco PA is a former ATSF unit. I don't know if it "belongs" to Doyle himself or the museum. The Nickel Plate scheme has something to do with his childhood memories. He has gotten some flack for not painting it in the historical Santa Fe Warbonnet scheme but at least its restored and has a good future. One other is being restored in a proper Santa Fe scheme somewhere,(Texas?). All were in Mexico. The other one I think is in a museum there.

Love this video! I have a B&W poster of 4449 in situ I would like to send you a copy of if a secure way of communicating an address can be worked out. My understanding is that the major USRA recerts for steam locos are every 15 years or XX miles. 4449 had one finished 2-3 years ago. Since steam locos don't collect very many miles any more, the interval seems to usually be the 15 years. The gentleman at the Rail Heritage Center I talked to said they completed it for about $150,000 because they did most of the work in house. Some places have spent a million or more for this work. The Nickle Plate diesel belongs to Doyle McCormick, who oversaw the Freedom Train restoration project. There is a Tracks Ahead episode which has a segment on this. The one sure time when 4449 seems to go out is during the Christmas holidays for the Polar Express cocoa runs for the kids. There are other occasional runs throughout the year, but these sell out quick.
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 5 жыл бұрын
Hi. The other runs have been called off because they were sanctioned by Amtrak. And Amtrak has canceled the program. Let’s hope for now. As of right now they can’t get on a mainline. Big boy is costing 3 million and almost all the work is in house. Paid by a nameless Angel. As for contact: look for “guys hobby shop” on the channel page. (Not really a hobby shop). And there is a sort of secure email link.

Very well done, I was wondering when this episode would be released. One correction about the PA though, there are actually 4 PAs that still survive. The PA is also not from the Nickel Plate, it was originally built in 1948 as Santa Fe 62, in fact all 4 of the surviving PAs are from the Santa Fe. 59 is being restored to operation in Texas, 62 is in Portland, and the other two are at a Railroad Museum in Mexico. The 62 is owned by Doyle McCormack, who is the engineer on the 4449. He repainted 62 as Nickel Plate 190 because his dad worked for the Nickel Plate and the first locomotive he ever got to ride on was on the real Nickel Plate 190, which was also a PA. I heard all that from Doyle himself when I got to meet him earlier this year.

I missed the Freedom Train as I was out of the country with the U. S. Army in Germany. I spent the 4th of July 1976 watching boxing matches where anyone could enter and fight. The way it ended the was the Samoans for our Cavalry Troop won the title. I tell Hohenfels was a dusty hot in the summer and freezing in the winter kind of place. We'd spend a couple of days in the billets and the rest of the time was spent driving, stopping looking around, drive some more and repeat. We ate and slept in or on our tracked vehicles. There were the patrols or like the time this big owl or some type of bird of prey mistook me for a rabbit and swooped down on me. It scared the living crap💩 out of me. I did manage to keep my wit's through all this and not instinctively run like crazy crawling back across the open field to our perimeter. Crazy time, crazy times😵😱😴

GS stood for Golden State until they wanted more during WW2, they then changed the GS designation to General Service and later GS locos didn't come with the extra panels. Doyle McCormick owns the Nickel Plate locos and he is responsible for 4449 and most of what is there. OWR&N is a former UP loco. OWR&N is like the OSL and several others parts of the UP region.

SP&S 700 is the same design as NP's A-3 Northerns. The NP A-4 and A-5's were even bigger. I think they and the last versions of the Santa Fe 4-8-4's (2900's) were the biggest of the Northerns (by weight). They are visibly larger than N&W 611, UP 844, SP 4449, etc. I have seen HO brass models of all of them displayed side by side, and the NP and SF locomotives are the giants among the giants. I think the list, by weight, goes from largest operational (or nearly so) down as: UP 4014, UP 3985, N&W 1218, SP&S 700, N&W 611, UP 844....

That's a beautiful bit of heritage to enjoy. Hey when you are back up in Portland you may want to rent a car and trip out Highway 30 to Astoria... There is Columbia River Maritime Museum the last time I was there it was really nice. There are other museums out there worth screwing around at. Then you have Fort Astoria. You could spend a few days easy just exploring Astoria and the northern coast there. You also have the the four mile long Megler Bridge crossing the mouth of the Columbia over to Washington. Warning the bridge is not for the faint of heart I've been over it in a storm and it was interesting crossing the high-rise section of the span. While you are out there by the Columbia River Maritime Museum is a fish and chips shop called the Bowpicker that's one of the places we stop to eat when we are down on the Oregon coast... If you want to see if they are open when you are up that way, you will find them here www.bowpicker.com/ Every time we have been there the food has been great. Depending on the time of year we go down to Vancouver Wa. to see Twinkles parents, we may take Highway 30 out of Portland along the Columbia to Astoria to mess around for a while. Then pop over the Megler Bridge and come back on the north side of the River or head up the coast on 101 and 105 for parts north.

In reference to Amtrak stopping excursion trains. The original goal of Amtrak was to keep passenger trains running at a time when railroads had no interest in running them. The goal of any business is to make the most money the easiest way possible. But Amtrak was created to keep a necessary service alive by using profits from some lines to provide passenger services to places that needed them. And these excursions have been a function of that. Use their access to rails to keep historical trains running for the General good. But many think Amtrak is a business like any other. With only a profit mission. Never was. But many disagree with there original mission and so want to kill the whole thing.

At the top of the comment section there is a paragraph about mr. Mcclarney and how he was the one that Envision a concept of an area to keep all this equipment. But not necessarily the real Museum . but just a mere fact that it had to get off Union Pacific / Southern Pacific property and be protected because the city of Portland wasn't going to take care of it. In the last decade of the last century all the equipment and 197 AKA 3203, 700, 4449 and miscellaneous nrhs equipment were all house at the Brooklyn roundhouse in Southeast Portland.. it was quite evident 2 mclarney that they had to find a permanent home for that equipment and in the end the Brooklyn roundhouse was abolished to make room for cofc and tofc operations on the Union Pacific yard at Brooklyn . So, in my heart I truly believe it's a rail museum is actually the result of that decision that Chris made so many decades previous to the Heritage Center coming into existence and that in itself is the True Legacy. I do not make the claim that Doyle had nothing to do with it. but having been on the ground during those decades I know where the concept came from. Chris and Doyle may have collaborated that I may not know for certain.

Might I be so brave to say none of that would have ever happened, if it wasn't for the unsung hero that never gets the credit he deserves, May God Rest his soul. That I speak of is no other than Christopher Brian McCarney. Now there's a story to do. How at 16 with a backpack full of tools he rode is bike 10 Mi to Oaks Park from Hollywood every Saturday to work on 700. This was in 1975 after Chris one done working on the Freedom Train. This is not to take anything away from 4449. In fact in later years in the 80s he was a crew member on the 49 and went to make the movie the tough guys. What the Freedom Train had was the funding to make it happen. But Chris had didn't have anything but a strong back and a crescent wrench! There's a lot of names in groups I could drag through the mud telling the story. but I know Chris would not want it that way . But 1975 the guy that started to to bring the 700 back to life. He was the beginning of all the restoration efforts that you now see in Portland and it was Chris who envisioned that Heritage Center. Maybe not in its current form.He was the guy that envision the idea that they had to get out of the Brooklyn roundhouse.he knew a place to go to be . Because he knew all the equipment could be scrapped within a blink of an eye. So, if they didn't have a home, all efforts and Acquisitions were in vain. He developed as a mindset that the Pacific Railroad restoration associate should never buy another piece of equipment nor we should never turn another wrench,until we have a secure place for that equipment. Where has on most Saturdays most members wanted to come down and play Train, he insisted that what you see today must happen and that is a result of it right there. In the end there were a lot of people that contributed in the restoration of the 700 who was that kid on a 10 speed bike or the drive-in is got it got it done or not or whatever would have happened trust me. You never saw Glory but rather was very the studious introvert Renaissance Man of steam. In reality Chris requested was be left alone to be with his machines

Don’t know any of this story. Wow. I know so little about these locomotives and the restoration and shop and the group. I know 4449 only from seeing it A tiny bit about getting it ready for the freedom train.

Chris was the guy who got it all going all right now is 10 speed bike down to the park and cracking on the lubricators to keep things in mechanically good . I suspect some of the old-timers on the Freedom Train crew told him to do this. but I don't know for sure. And Chris and crew kept tirelessly working at it . But at first it was just Chris but after a couple years up some other hardcore steam fanatics joined him.

Obtw, that union Pacific caboose 25198 at the museum, belonged to Chris. He was on business trip to get passenger cars in Ogden to ship back to Pasco? Working with Bruce Moore. Another story for another time. Anyway they spotted it on siding with bunch stored u.p. cars. It was in Idaho somewhere out in as he would joke, out in simplot land. He remembered it from his childhood .It was assigned to the Rockwood local which ran From Albina yard along I-84 about 10 miles to the Rockwood industrial park. He got the u.p. to donate it to his nonprofit.the Pacific railroad preservation association( prpa). When Chris's journey with prpa ended on a stub track, he traded the 700 blue prints for 25198. This was long after the 700 completed restoration. This after the much debated topic of find a home for the trains or screw around every Saturday playing trains, as it where. He was dead set against getting any more equipment that had no home. In 1993 he went Jersey got a hand full of great northern passenger car off the c.n.j. solo them across csx and the bn to pdx.

I always wanted to see the Brooklyn roundhouse. Never did. Sort of sad. BUT the new place is amazing. Still like looking at photos and models of the old place. Hope they get the turntable up and going at some point. Turntables are great for turning locos that don't need to be turned but are great for screwing around with.

Toy Man Television the Brooklyn roundhouse was a prototype and Southern Pacific followed in this building Everest it was similar to the one at Timber Oregon on the Tillamook branch.as with most I've seen ,most it made out of sheet metal. Kind of just like the e.sydum kits were the prototype off of the Southern Pacific Design. The master piece of Portland was the Hoyt Street Roundhouse. Located next to the main line to Seattle and South to Eugene. If you don't know if that's where the 49 was restored back in 74. Occasionally the BN Crews would run a century 636 out the back. You had all this Cornucopia power there. F - unit alco's you name it . That was the place to be on on Saturday afternoons when I was a teenager and boy was I there. The Roundhouse was right next to Union Station.

The narrator plays loose with the facts in numerous instances or just doesn't know what he is talking about ... too bad.

Just a few items off the top of my head. - The people of Portland did not come up with the idea for the American Freedom Train. Ross Rowland did. Nor did they come up with the idea to restore 4449. AFT Foundation Mechanical Officer Wes Camp inspected and pitched 4449 to the Foundation. - 4449 was not the first engine restored for AFT service, Reading 2101 (AFT #1) was. Additionally, 4449 was not the first locomotive to be returned to service … UP 8444, Nickel Plate 759, the Reading T-1s, etc. were all in service in the late sixties, early seventies. - The journey of the AFT lasted 21 months. Exactly. Not 18 months - 2 years. - The two major railroads that served Portland were the Southern Pacific and the Spokane, Portland & Seattle (later the Burlington Northern, now the Burlington Northern Santa Fe). Although they owned several short lines, the UP didn’t come into the game in a major way until 1996. - 4449 has run on UP rails … it even double-headed with 844. - The AFT received NO government funding. None. It was funded by corporate donations and through ticket sales. - 4449 is NOT ‘periodically repainted’ back in to AFT colors. It has happened once since the bicentennial, from about March 2002 until 2004. - 4449 is not relegated to operations on smaller railroads. It makes mainline trips on the BNSF and even made a trip from Portland to Michigan and back a few years ago. - There are four PA1s in existence, not three. - FRA requires a “rebuild” every 15 years or 1,472 days of service, not every five years.

John Lewis the narrator does a fine job of presenting material in a conversational way. These are for fun, not a treatise on history. Thank you Toy Man for getting out there and providing well photographed and edited segments.
