In this video, I step you through my installation of a Southern Style OffRoad roof rack on my 2020 4Runner TRD Pro. SSO recently updated their roof mounts with a much better design that does not require any messy silicone sealant. I did deviate from the instructions slightly by adding some soft silicone washers as an added measure.

Great video. Narrowed down to sso or Sherpa. Any info you can share about how thick plates are? Sherpa has 1/4 inch aluminum which is pretty good. Also is composite similar to their “rubber blocks”

I am seriously looking at the SSO rack. All great tips on assembly and making water tight. Out of curiosity, what does the bare naked rack as installed weigh? SSO website says 90lbs, is that right?

I would say that is about right. It felt about that light/heavy when it was in a single box when it arrived at my doorstep.

Nice rack, does a pool of water linger in the void area next to the block. Seems like it should all be filled with a cover. Anyway I like the overall look of it.

Sure, water will sit in the crevasses of the rack until it evaporates or gets blown out while you drive. No different than any similar racks from other suppliers.

Thanks for this post. What silicone washer did you use/recommend? Or it something universal I can get at hardware store? Thx

Another question for you...did your composite blocks snap over the white tubes or are they just bolted to them and the butyl tape fills the gap? Hope this makes sense...I have them as well (not installed yet) but when I mocked them up, they don't feel as if they fit snuggly over the white tubes...
@theoverlanded
@theoverlanded 2 жыл бұрын
To the best of my knowledge, the blocks are to fit over the white tubes so that the blocks fit snug up against the roof, with the butyl tape filling every crevasse. They are a tight fit. I did end up boring the holes on a couple of the blocks as the white tubes didn't fit well over the tubes when I dry fit them.

@@theoverlanded thank you - did you bore the entire hole or just enough to get it to fit over the tube? Really appreciate it - videos are simplistic , easy to follow and provide great content.

Just enough so the tubes would sit inside.

Can you use the sunroof with this rack?
@theoverlanded
@theoverlanded 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. I don’t currently have crossbars over the sun roof. Even if I did, there is enough clearance to use open the sunroof in either position.

@@theoverlanded Fantastic. I just got my Lime Rush TRD pro and don’t like the oem roof rack on it. I am going to try to get a full roof rack like yours.

2:46 I think my leaks are actually resulting from water leaking around the outside of those plastic tubes and not in through the threads of the bolts as I originally suspected. I thought those inserts the bolts fasten through inside the roof would be much better sealed than I see now, just being clipped underneath the roof. Hopefully that butyl tape will remedy that design flaw.
@theoverlanded

Yes, I agree that the most critical area of focus is the rain channel and the outside of the white tubes around the roof anchor. As you can see in the video, I packed some of the butyl tape around those tubes before I put in the composite block with the bottom all covered in the tape. There is no water getting under there, in my opinion, with this configuration.

@@theoverlanded do u think adding silicone to it would be an overkill? Thanks so much for vids and help!

I didn’t use a drop of silicone sealant. I did add the silicone washers though. I didn’t want to use any of that messy silicone sealant and this new configuration from SSO with the composite blocks and butyl tape eliminates the need for silicone sealant. I’ve been in some heavy storms and car washes with no sign of leaking.

The feet of a roof rack are the most critical component. You really need at least 4 per side to handle dynamic loads. Downward force is a minor issue when compared to the side forces generated when a vehicle sways from side to side on a trail or lousy road. Always add at least one extra set of feet regardless of the brand. Those forces need to be spread out. The reality is that there are only two feet on each side handling lateral loads. That's not enough for rough terrain over extended distances and time.

Unless you want to drill a few holes on your roof to accommodate these extra brackets, not sure I want to do that. I think these two brackets on each side should be sufficient, especially these brackets are made of steel with welded brace/stiffeners to handle the repeated stress. I found only SSO has this kind of feature.
