We have a piston manufacturer in my town, that used to be our largest employer. They make pistons for GM, Toyota, Nissan, Ford and many others. They have in the last 10 years or so, been moving all of their production to Mexico. They were supposed to have moved everything and close our plant by the end of last year. They have not closed our plant yet and sound like they might be bring some of the production back from Mexico. Apparently, Mexican quality isn't as great as they thought it would be.

I know of a certain Japanese company that moved some of their production to Mexico. It is the LOWEST QUALITY of employee you can imagine. They use illiterate people in rural, drug infested, regions to do the work. The definition of IDGAF. Gang violence in the plant is so bad they have armed security throughout. From the outside it looks more like a prison than a manufacturing facility. They literally have guard towers - you can see the razor wire fencing and guard towers from Google maps. They had to fly a US executive out of there in an emergency because they were witness to a gang shooting at a restaurant - right in front of them as they ate. They had to go straight to an airport, onto a private jet, and leave everything behind in like 30 minutes. It's not America by a longshot. Point being, do not purchase a vehicle assembled in Mexico, no matter the brand.

That was one of the piston set we manufacture at the Federal-Mogul facility (now Teneco) located in South Bend Indiana up until about three years ago when all the piston manufacturing was moved to Mexico. When I started there 35 years ago one full production line was dedicated just to Cadillac. The last major project I worked on was the GEN V engines which included 5.3 L, 4.3 L and the 6.2 L. Take a look at the crown so those Pistons that are completely machine no casting surface left and we did it with only three tools and we had to achieve a cycle time of 12 seconds per part. We were able to do that by using a dual spindle machine and using two of them.

That's a pretty standard piston crown for a modern DI engine. That odd depression is meant to concentrate the fuel for the best burn. Slightly reminds me of Honda's old CVCC system with their aux intake valve pre-combustion chamber.
@scrappy7571

They can change the injector timing and pressure depending on rpms and engine temperature. The depression is used during idle speed. There is a Honda video floating around that explains direct injection very well. Nobody at GM training ever explained to us techs how the system works... go figure.

Dump a can of STP in it and take it to the dealership after the service department is closed and when it’s dark outside. The problem with these high output low displacement turbo engines is that people don't treat them as such, a small block chevy may have less horsepower but you could run one on varnish and dino oil without catastrophic failure. You gotta use premium on turbo engines, knocking and pinging usuallyresults in cracked and melted pistons. I do wonder if pinging was the cause of the issues on these enhine or if its just a design flaw, they are a funny piston design after all.

It had a 2 liter Turbo with under 100k, that the customer told me had cost him more in repairs than the car cost new. He had seen enough of a car with a engine that was too small to drive all the luxury components of his junk heap, so he was sending it to it's final resting place at the local car wrecker. That car had 1 headgasket, a water pump and 3 timing belts it's entire life and my dad & I replaced everything in our driveway! The fact that a car built in 84 was still on the road in 2004 should tell you something, it having under 100k miles tells me it was probably a old persons and the car sat all it's life which is the worse thing for any vehicle and the customer probably didnt not know the difference between a torque wrench & a line wrench and would rather have a car payment & dealer service than doing something for himself!

Whoever convinced them to do a second engine without researching the known issues is the one who is at fault, intentional or not. Most people don't have a clue, that's why they bring their rig to a mechanic because, hopefully they know what to do. Whenever I do a repair for anyone, the first check is known or common issues, that may not be what I'm fixing, but having that knowledge helps answer other questions they might have later, plus most of the people are friends or family anyway, so I might as well know what's coming.

While you might manage 10K rpm with a mechanical system, modern ECUs prevent that unless the source of the rpm is the transmission, i.e. being stuck in gear going down a steep slope.

Some of these have a calibration update that injects another "squirt" of fuel into the cylinder to help prevent LSPI. Some believe it's left over carbon that starts the pre-ignition or just the way GDI's are designed. These engines have an amazing amount of oil dilution and direct injection also doesn't allow for any air to be mixed in with the fuel before it hits the bang chamber. I have a 2017 cruze 1.4l LE2 turbo. They claim the issue is fixed but my dealer told me that regular gas is all you run in these cars and I was hitting around 43mpg but came winter, the engine started rattling like it was having some hellacious spark knock. I started doing research and found that people were having problems with their engines grenading from LSPI and the TSB only diagnoses the problem with Symptom: Engine misfire detected, Solution: Replace engine. They also in the TSB tell dealerships to update to the latest calibration on the ECM that supposedly fixes the LSPI issue. I had to start running premium in my car and the pinging went away but my mileage dropped to about 35mpg now running premium. The engine also does weird hesitations and feels like its misfiring since I bought it with around 85,000 miles on the clock. The calibrations were the latest version so I'm wondering if they played around with the fuel maps to make the car run like shit just to keep the engine from blowing up.

There is more BTU (energy) in 87 octane gas than 93. Unless you can benefit from running higher compression or more boost the lower octane is more efficient for mileage. I would not doubt that they also richened up the fuel maps on the NEW updated calibration to save the motors from lean conditions which would cause preignition.
@ats9682

@@cp6027 The 2017 LE2 in my Cruze does not like 87 at all. It runs fine and gets great gas mileage but there is so much knock retard per cylinder it starts rattling like the engine is going to grenade. Some of them hit so hard that it causes a misfire on that cylinder and I can feel it stutter. I think winter grade is more likely to do it because I didn't notice it until it started getting cooler. It was loud enough to be heard over the radio. I also can torque brake it and roll the window down to hear it rapping like 50 cent.

Eric, turbos on small displacement engines are an engineer's pipe dream as they radically shorten engine life expectancy! You increase cylinder pressure at your peril. Gas money saved by high efficiency tuning will be spent on engine repair. Three engines in 108k is a crime! Great show us how video! Thanks!

Sad to see another car going to the crusher at those miles. But, what else can you do? Spend thousands of dollars and it's already had 3 engines. But, Eric showed it and it definitely isn't going to just fix itself or get fixed with a bottle of Seafoam or anything. Hope the customer can afford another car in this market. I keep fixing my 2005 Silverado 5.3 because I can't afford a 70 grand replacement, nor a used one that no telling how it was treated. Maybe instead of crushing it someone could just "modify" it with another LS...lol. Anyway, thanks for the detailed analysis. That scope is the bomb for sure. Eric, Great video - thank you. Perhaps you could do a video (WUW, etc) on why modern automobiles have to be so complex* - which causes them to be more unreliable and more expensive to repair. I understand that some consumers want comfort, aesthetics, and performance, manufacturers want to reduce costs, be competitive, and profitable, and governments mandate safety, fuel efficiency, and emissions standards. But is it technology just for technology's sake? BTW I drive a 2006 4 cylinder 'economy' car with minimal features. It gets me from A to B, doesnt turn heads or make my neighbours jealous. It doesnt have 4/all wheel drive - needed for less than 2 percent of all miles driven. And it doesnt have 9 passenger seating - for one person 98 percent of the time. I also drive the speed limit. *I understand 'complex' is a relative term. SMA#1 Paul (in MA)

Danger Wil Robinson!! Working at a Honda dealership some years back, performing a 60K service including spark plugs, I unknowing had a Snap On MAGNETIC spark plug socket that had a piece of magnet break off and drop into the cylinder. With the 2.2L aluminum head, it fell right down on top of the piston. When the service was complete, I fired it up. It sounded like an empty spray paint can being shaken at high speed for about 3 seconds, and then it was ejected out the exhaust valve, which closed on on the piece of magnet chipping the valve and damaging the valve seat causing an instant dead miss. Long story short, the dealership ate the parts and I ate the labor. After the service manager called the customer and put him in a loaner car he told all the techs in the shop that if anyone had magnetic spark plug sockets, to throw them in the trash. Mine was the first one in the can and I will never forget eating that job. I hope that none of you will ever have too.

If this TI wasn't on it, I would have guessed a bent valve, so I learned a thing here. The spot in the wall you see is wear due to piston load/slapping and not deformation due to coolant jackets being close. Built to a budget that was evidently a bit too low to make the engine reliable.
