In this video I have a look at a 2008 GMC Envoy that was dropped off from another shop with a customer complaint of poor running, no acceleration, service engine soon light on, reduced power light and many more. Evidently this happened after car sat for about a month. -Enjoy!

The funny thing is, with schematics and his scan tool that can see inputs and live data, its not hard to track down eletrical issues. The other shops should be able to do this. They are a legitimate mechanic shop afterall I say its easy but I also have a computer science degree and had to learn electronics repair so i use those skills when diagnosing vehicles also. So maybe its hard for others even though they should be trained to repair vehicles properly if they are a legit shop.

I have to say this as a state-certified electrical engineer with over 20 years of professional experience: These crimp connectors with the heat shrink tubing and the adhesive are the best, if not the only permanent solution to repairing a broken wire in the car. Anything that has the word "soldering" in its name has no place in a car - except everything that is absolutely hard-fixed to the chassis (PCM, ECM, every other component with a PCB). But as Eric already said, due to the vibrations in the car, the copper wires break again exactly at the soldering point. A wire cannot be hard-fixed to the chassis - so it will always move due to the vibrations! That's one of the things that really convinced me right away about Eric, that he's a "good guy" and knows what he's doing. 👍 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My favorite “mechanic vs passenger” story is when an old friend of mine was working in the cabin with a plane full of people. A passenger was giving him grief about him talking too long to fix the problem. He finally had all he could take and told the passenger, “Unless you want to end up in the bay in a pile of whale shit, shut up and let me do my job!” (He was working on electrical cables the size of your thumb behind the flight attendant seat.)

According to the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) electrical standards: The ABYC E-11 standard "solder shall not be the sole means of electrical connection". Due to the possibility of vibration causing solder to crack or otherwise fail, only crimping is permitted in Marine applications. Solder can only be used in addition to a crimp connection. That supports Eric O's argument. I realize we are talking about automobiles, but the Marine standards are higher due to wet environments, salt spray, constant vibrations and pounding electrical connections will likely be subjected to. So Eric, I would say your method of repair is about as good as can be reasonably applied. A sound practice! It provides both a mechanical connection which is best against vibration and as good a protection from moisture and salt as can be desired. BTW-Haters gonna hate!

I saw someone comment about that on a video once concerning aircraft, I believe the reasoning is the vibration can cause the solder to crack. That's why they use the crimp method. If it's good enough for the airline industry, it's good enough for passenger cars for sure.

As an ex British Airways Engineer Mr O, you can tell the guy that criticised your crimp repair that the next time he’s on a flight to think of all the hundreds of crimp cable repairs thats currently on the Aircraft, does he think we pull the cable along it’s whole length from the aircraft and replace it. Depending on the application we use solder sleeves and inline crimps, heat shrink sealed of course. But I will say it’s strictly regulated, you must use the correct crimp for wire size and the appropriate crimp tool, and staggered so they don’t lay on top of each other. You can’t pull over up there Mr O 👍 Great diag as usual.
