Our family went to the same service station for over 40 years. The owner retired and his son took over. My mother was still driving in her 70's and took her new Dodge Colt to them for service, oil change, air filters and general check over. Every thing seemed fine. Something happened, I don't remember what it was now but it was something minor. I checked the oil, it was low and filthy, the oil filter was not changed and someone at the station punched a hole in the old air filter so that the engine could breath. The air filter was filthy as well. What possesses someone to do that? That was the last time we visited that shop and a few years later it was out of business. Honesty is the best policy.

I loved the idea of regenerative braking, but was surprised at how hard it is for brakes to survive without being regularly used. If I owned a Prius I'd make sure to jam on the brakes once in a while to try and keep everything moving. Like parking brakes, if you don't use them, you lose them.

@@agger838 A yearly "brake service" is a hard sell in the shop. As a DIY'er I 100% agree with you. Service brakes in the rust belt every 6 months to a year and you'll get some good life out of them. Try selling that service as a shop gets tricky.

I live in North Carolina. So there are no issues with rust rotted rotors. I used to get mine (DYI) turned at a local shop but then found that new ones were damn near the same cost. I had to smile at your observation that most of the shops in your area (the PRNY more broadly?) sold their lathes long ago. Great videos and lessons Eriic. And keep the dry wit humor coming, too.

most rotors are all composite metals now and the pad friction material are so hard it generally wears the rotors down also. pretty much meaning there's not enough "meat" left to turn them anyway or they'll be right at the minimum wear limit once turned. the only place I know of that turns rotors anymore is the big "green" automotive chain(O'Reilly) and maybe some NAPA that carry truck parts/service centers.

You do a great job of showing how to do the work in the rust belt. These tips and tricks have helped me even down here in the south. You do an especially great job in this video teaching WHY. Why you don't just slap a set of new pads in and call it good. Why you don't just shove in a new sensor. Why you have to do the work to get down to the root of the problems and why youinspect other things that are no problem now... but will cause the customer problems later. The level of TRUST your customer has in your word Shouts from the Mountain Top "I feel Safe putting my families life in his hands." Wowzers!!! 70-ish thousand on the clock. I bought a 2013 in 2019 with 143k. I drove a lot too. Had been through three sets of rear pads and two sets of front. I also opted to pull over when my wheel bearing gave me fault codes... I had an appointment scheduled to get that changed but it turns out it was way worse than I thought and when it turned off my cruise control 60 miles from home I'm like "alright... cool. I'll just pull over and have it towed to the shop. Just in case there's something really serious going on". Turns out there's like five other things that cause the same lights to turn on. One of them is the brakes ceasing to function. Some electrical mumbo-jumbo fails a certain way and you have no brakes. Not "some brakes" like every other system. None at all! So $450-ish tow bill later and a new wheel bearing followed by three more wheel bearings needing replaced a week after... Yeah. I miss how cheap that car was to operate and maintain... I don't miss the size of it and the lack of fog lights. I feel like if I had fog lights I might not have killed that deer with my Prius... and also might not have killed my Prius with that deer.
