Sorry, but I have to start pinning this until I learn how to speak clearly again. I am not having a stroke nor do I have bell’s palsy, a brain tumor or MS. I do not have ALS or a migraine. Please stop calling my shop to notify me or Mrs.O that I can not speak clearly. I am very aware of my inability to "pronunciate" words like I use to and she is also aware of my slurred speech. We live together and work together and I even talk to her. I have an upper palate expander in my mouth. It interferes with my tongue. Shcrews up my shpeech . Thank you for your concerns. -Eric O.

I wore a pallet expander for 18 months as a teenager, the base of my tongue would often swell up after tightenings and make things hard to speak and very painful. Fun fact I can still barely feel a spot on the roof of my mouth where it used to be more than 10 years ago! Love the videos Eric, great job diagnosing this one

A friend went to a shop for remote start. Shop has been in the neighborhood for many years. Good reviews. They mounted something under the dashboard and drilled through the firewall into the engine compartment. Found out later on the way home after having no brakes coming up to a red light they drilled a hole in the power booster for the brakes.

I installed remote starts for 10 years, I had alot of pride in my work. I also did trouble shooting on remote starter installs from other shops, I was horrified at the lack of solder, tape and wire routing paths 95% of the time when I looked over another shops work. My main competitor had 2 installers per car and would have a car in and out the door in approx 20 minutes. I took 2-3 hours even with a helper, depending on vehicle. I only ever had 2 comebacks and both were circuit board failures.

I was always maddened by every install I ever saw. But also thanked them because I fixed so many I can't even remember how many times. It was good fast money and I never had a come back from my repairs. Also no cheap remote starts should be left in an auto because they always end up DOA some where. They are not passive and interrupt the ignition power and start signal cicuits.

I've had all my remote starters installed at a reputable shop. They do audio systems, remote starts, and alarms. Nothing else. Never had an issue. The work is always neat and done very well. @@luvdady Some modern cars make it way simpler if you get the right kit. It’ll basically be plug and play without needing to splice into anything. But, that often requires a more expensive kit and it won’t be universal so a lot of places don’t bother with them.

Back when you were a Young pup, my wife purchased a used Ford Bronco II . It had an after market car stereo, after market car alarm, after market CB radio and tons of electrical issues. We got a good deal on it because of the electrical issues and we took a chance thinking the dealer was to stupid to take the after market stuff out to solve the issues. I spent a Saturday afternoon taking all the extra crap out and fixing the wires. That little beast ended up being a solid daily driver and we never had a single issue with it.

Yep, I recently had a 09 Ford, that didnt want to start, and would shut off on me. The PCM relay was going bad. it was a very weird, slowly degrading failure. And when the PCM powered off, it threw the code for Passive Security. But that was false. Swapped a known good relay and all the issues vanished. Bought all new relays for it. And sold her off.

Had a VW Rabbit in the 70's. About every 25k miles it would shut off for no reason. Was on the 3rd ignition switch when I figured out that the cause was an overweight key ring. The weight of the key ring kept pressure on the switch trying to turn off the ignition. Took keys off the ring - no more problems.

At least with aftermarket radios you can get adapter plugs to plug into the factory connections, so that the only shitty wiring possible is between that and the stereo itself. Of course, that didn't stop tons of master youtube technicians cutting factory plugs off and wire nutting everything xD

@@ice44567 Yep. When I replaced the Alpine aftermarket head unit, it, and the one I put in (has BT, USB connections, as well as the 3.5mm jack that I almost never use), the factory radio harness was kept intact and a wiring harness connector was used and as long as that's been done, and pushed in solidly, it'll be fine, the radio will act as if factry, when in fact, it's an aftermarket unit. Mind you, my car is a 2003 Mazda Protege 5 wagon and the JVC unit I put in is from 2012.

I'll second (or third) that! It can be downright painful! I recently installed a dash cam in my wife's car, and had to access the fuse box (2020 RAV4). Wouldn't you know it, it's right above where the clutch pedal should have been, and facing downwards! After switching to reading glasses, as progressives don't work at that angle, I suddenly had a regret - some years ago I got rid of my weight lifting set (getting a bit too old now, 67), and that back bench for presses would have been the perfect height for this job!! Question now is, do I buy a bench for the next car, or do I take it to the stealership to install? Hmmmm .... answered my own question there!!

My dad who was a mechanic told us boys if we wanted to be one, he would hit us in the head with a wrench. Learned much from him over the years that has saved me much money. Passed it along to my son, and lord knows how many motors and transmissions he went through that I helped him fix. Taught him how to hold the spark plug wire to check spark just like my dad did us on a lawn mower. My daughter not too bad on the little stuff, like oil changes and other things. My little Ford Ranger. With AC on, every time I’d move the shift column it would blow the AC fuse. During the Summer when it would just be on all the time, start the truck and it would be on then put it in heat and pop, the fuse would blow. Trained myself to turn it of before turning off truck after if replace it while running. Anyway. Found out it’s a fairly common problem with these trucks. KZfaq backyard mechanic somehow in a miraculous way figured it out. Apparently the AC shared a fuse with reverse or reverse lights. Inside the clamshell cover there is a zip tie that holds the wires secured to the column that wears a very very small bit of the insulation away and it contacts the metal and shorts it out. Cut the zip tie and only done at night when it’s dark and a flashlight. You can see the tiniest of a shiner. Placed black tape, leave the zip tie off and good for the last five plus years. Luckily that guy did all the probing from both reverse lights in rear taillights forward to the cab and discovered this. Still amazed he discovered this minute issue. I hope to die before I need to replace my little 02’ Ranger. My chances are good if it last another 10-15 years.

So, the install didn't look bad, I've certainly seen/removed much worse. That does not look like a BestBuy Slamstall. Why the plug wasn't locked properly was an unfortunate oversight. I've done plenty of CS installs, Toyotas are super easy (compared to many), now I personally choose to use plug-in kits now, very little tapping in or soldering to do and easily removed. That is a quality starter she has installed, the installer just left a plug loose. Could have happened from anybody who's been in there in-between, we don't know for sure.

This makes me so glad that nearly all of the current gen Toyotas come with remote start integrated into the DCM/Telematics system by default. Set up the trial account once and shebam, key fob remote start forever. As of the 2023MY all Rav4s have remote start built into them by default. Even the basest trim. It's nice.

Often times people put everything on their keychain including the kitchen sink and all that weight will destroy the internals in the ignition switch and it will need to be replaced. Guys that put those aftermarket anything is a nightmare. From stereos, alarms and remote starters. They often times will butcher everything they touch. I usually don’t do other peoples rework unless I’m going to get paid for it. Having to redo someone else’s work is always a nightmare. Keep doin what you do bruh!

Too many people only listening to your voice and not what you are saying. 3 or 4 videos in from your oral fix being done and I don't really hear it except when you start out on a new video. I can see where this fix could be very touchy to find (literally) and how being persistent and methodical will help eliminate what the problem isn't. Nice catch on the connector Eric and this shows how much better a mechanic you are than the others who couldn't reproduce the problem!

I agree with your assessment of aftermarket remote starters. I bought a used S10 Blazer that had an aftermarket remote starter/security system. The first time I was working on the truck, I rolled down the windows and unlocked the doors. I walked away from the vehicle and didn't get 20 feet before it rolled up the windows and locked the doors. My next act was to figure out who manufactured it and obtained the installation instructions so that I could more easily trace the wiring to remove it all. Lucky for me, the installer only removed the insulation from the factory wiring in spots and wrapped the new wires around them and taped them. There were no Scotch locks or solder, just electrical tape. I pulled everything out and used multiple coats of liquid insulation and covered it with electrical tape. Problem solved. I really enjoy your videos, thanks.

Another great video of real world problems. Great work Mr. O. I found a similar problem on a 1990s Jaguar that would stall at random times. I did some wiggle tests and just as I was going try another approach, sort slammed the passenger door and it stalled immediately. Right inside that door in the glove compartment was the ecm. A check of the connectors revealed one side was hooked into the socket normally but the other side was just inside the socket. I pushed both sides to connect properly. Problem solved

Eric, Don't concern yourself with others. What they think at times doesn't matter. YOU do good work and YOU only need to only worry about what you think we should know, which in my opinion is nothing. It's personal and it should remain that way. Should YOU feel the need to share anything with your fans that's your choice. I hope your dental procedure progresses and ends in success. I'm sorry that some feel that just because they subscribe to your channel that entitles them to your personal info. It DOES NOT. People, respect this man's privacy. Just that simple. Ron

As a former mechanic and still to this day, I tell people, if it doesn't come from the factory with remote start, don't put it in, you'll regret it. My neighbor has a '16 Edge and had an aftermarket remote starter put in 2 weeks after buying it. They've been through both recalls and now the aftermarket remote start is starting to act up this winter when she starts it a 5 am and we live in Wisconsin.

@@51ubetcha A lot of manufacturers are gatekeeping remote start behind higher trim levels, while offering it as a subscription on lower trims. I don't really like it, but I also don't see the huge issue with it since it gives more reasons to choose the higher trim, while still offering the feature to people who can't or do not want to spend that much. Usually the subscription stuff is using an app that communicates with the car over the cell network, while the built in remote start feature is included in the fob and will work regardless of cell connection.
