Thanks for watching! People often have similar thoughts regarding the impact upon the plant roots... Typically in my area (36+ inches precipitation), I have moisture to "burn". The primary concern is depriving preventing weeds from competing with the crop. Cultivation in this field is done on the contour and so when a late-season small rainfall event comes, the ridges created SLOW the flow of water across the field and thus aid infiltration. Secondly. I know that relatively shallow inter-row tillage forces the plant to "root down". In a drought stress event, this gives the plant better chances of prospering. It also mechanically closes surface cracks in the soil and thus preserves soil profile moisture for use by the plant. All the inter-row tillage passes occur at a depth of less than 3 inches and typically before the 45 day point of plant development!

The 596 Massey has a twelve speed transmission. It is basically the same as the old 200 series with multipower. You really only have 3 gears for tillage :( and the shifts are all mechanical. BUT, it is a bullet-proof design.

They could be ordered, but I have never seen one (other than my brother who had a 4 row wide that he parted out). Remember these (danish or s-tines) were made in the late 70's. By that time, 6 and 8 row had taken over. International also made late model high quality cultivators. You can take a 6 row and make it 4 row! I have seen the older Massey model 144 4-row cultivators.

@@GeigerFarm We're doing our first year of Organic 30 inch rows soybeans, I was planning on 144000 seeds per acre. Is this too thin for 30in rows in your experience?

Yes IMHO. But this will vary according to your environment. I have learned to plant between 185-190 for our environment. I would seriously hesitate to go below 160...and even then you better have very good seed. In drier climates, you can reduce population!
