Wow a film with strong female characters that doesn’t emasculate the men! Every single character whether male or female shines.

I appreciate too, that it's not the fact Kathryn is a woman that she can't be Flight Commander, but that certain qualities are needed to be a good one and she's not there. "There's a difference between being bossy and being boss.". Likewise Kevin was booted from the seat earlier because he had not done the work to know what he was supposed to do, while Kathryn had and that made her more fit to be in the seat. Absolutely great that gender wasn't a factor except in Kathryn's stated goal of wanting to be the first woman flight Commander, which wasn't a great reason to just want to prove something and I think she was humbled for it.

I love this movie, but I just have to say two things.....What astronaut would leave an untrained child alone in space to retrieve a canister? Why wouldn't she wait for him to get the other one then the two of them would go back together. And secondly, when he's pulling on the canister, it wouldn't have gotten stuck like it did, clearly it was acting as if gravity was affecting it. In space it wouldn't have done that. Picky I know, but I still love this movie. "MaaAAAaaAAAaax!!" my fav line from Jinx.

The Shuttle doesn't store it's air in tanks... Air is produced by means by separating hydrogen and oxygen in water. It can last up nearly up to a month but generally 2 weeks
@Deeplycloseted4356 жыл бұрын
saquist well that would have shortened the film by 45 mins, and no spacewalk drama.
@testy4626 жыл бұрын
saquist I'm not sure that is correct. That's how the ISS does it, but I am fairly certian the shuttle carried liquid o2 tanks, as well as the Apollo/gemini etc craft. I can't find much information on this but they did talk about it on the Apollo 13 investigation and the shuttle disaster (Columbia) investigation. Talked about the consumables and how they wouldn't have lasted long enough to rescue the Columbia crew without endangering the next crew.
@raterus4 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert, but it seems they would filter the C02 from the air. Just because you add a bunch of Oxygen to the air doesn't mean the C02 still won't kill you, it has to be removed in a functioning system and that makes the Oxygen.
@brentboswell12943 жыл бұрын
NASA had technology from Apollo to keep oxygen in liquid form for months. Shuttle already drew LOX in during main engine burn. I remember reading that there were LOX tanks underneath the cargo bay floor. There was also liquid hydrogen stored-the shuttles made electricity in fuel cells that combined the two to make water (this was how the crew drank!). Carbon dioxide was removed from the cabin air by lithium hydroxide scrubbers attached to recirculation fans. Space suits also had lithium hydroxide scrubbers.

Imagine an alternate ending where the kids fail to rescue andie. The ship commences reentry and as it descends into earth's atmosphere, the teens can only watch in horror as Andy is roasted alive,hearing her screams of agony over the two way radio. Upon landing, they exit the craft, some crying, some just silent with a look of terror in their eyes. Andie is remembered as a hero and given an honorable memorial, her body vaporized by the reentry, but the kids never recover. Kathryn becomes an alcoholic who sells her ass on the street just to get some more drugs and liquor. Kevin is doomed to a life of mediocrity, failing everything he tries due to his anxiety and panic attacks. The guy who was standing next to andie when she got ejected commits suicide at 23, the stress and guilt weighing on him too much. The black guy leaves society to go live in the woods forever.
