I think that the bad reaction is because the studio could’ve held off on releasing the movie in light of the real life disaster. The Challenger exploded in January and the movie debuted in theaters in June. Studios were much more sensitive in later years. Movie /TV story lines about plane hijackings were pulled after what happened at the World Trade Center.

This was a solid film that delivered a fun and inspiring two hours. Pros: 1. Teamwork can overcome just about any obstacle. 2. Keeping your cool in an emergency is crucial. 3. As the Spanish say, "Querer es poder", meaning if you want it bad enough, you can do it. 4. As Jim Lovell once said, you never know what kind of circumstances are going to help you make it home. Cons: 1. A Space Camp group would never be allowed to sit in an engine test. (Anyone remember the Apollo 1 fire? Engine tests can be deadly.) 2. Jinx had too easy access to NASA's computer. 3. Planes in movies featuring Tom Skerrit tend to go into spins (this and Top Gun). I don't think I'd fly with him, LOL.

They had to delay this movie b/c of what happened to the Challenger in 1986 I was in fourth grade I think, and we watched the Shuttle go up and I was really excited b/c of the first teacher in space and then 45 seconds later BOOM! It exploded. Everyone was quiet. It was so sad to see these people finally getting a chance to go into space and they were gone. All b/c of the flooring at the bottom of the space shuttle. That why it blew up... I think.

I so recall watching this (more times than I can count) and being in absolute awe in what the characters depicted were experiencing in all ranges of emotion. Being a "GenX", the shuttle experience (or what we or at least I) envision in this scene was absolutely dream worthy given the perils the "crew" was encountering and then enjoying. Yes, there's a plethora of technobabble and no doubt realistic flaws in regards to how the shuttle operated, especially on takeoff but remember, it's a movie. That being said, I fully recall (and still share in the feeling decades later) so wanting to be in company with those seen on screen here and "experiencing" the same they depicted. Sometime the 80s & 90s hit the nail on the head for the audience of it's time and for this 45+ year old, it still does... ❤

One thing they didn't include in the re-entry was the S-turn maneuvers. There is a point where the shuttle's speed and the atmosphere's thickness are such that the orbiter will bounce off the atmosphere if it doesn't reduce the lift. To avoid this they roll the shuttle right and left to perform S-turns.

@MagicAl5F47813 жыл бұрын
Atlantis had not yet flown when the film was made and the night footage hid the name of the orbiter. Atlantis did fly before the film was released but the film production company was shut down the same month. STS-8 had been the only night landing at the time. There was one other night landing by Columbia before the film was delayed on account on the Challenger disaster, but that footage is not as good and Columbia's unique features including the SILTS pod on it tail make it a poor double for Atlantis even in the dark.

An official "snow day" was called as we could see it land AND hear the multiple sonic booms from it re-entering the earths atmosphere and shake any China on a shelf. Once NASA came to town, the cost of every motel room was TRIPLE knowing it would be covered; then it only dropped to a higher rate given the notoriety of some fame.
