The world's only full-featured Spanish Riding School morning exercise video is now on KZfaq!
Have to say I was very lucky and so thankful being able to make this video on September 27th, 2000 at the time when photographing and videoing was allowed (as long there was no flashing). I think I might have videoed Arthur Kottas-Heldenberg (12.10). But I am not really certain. This morning exercise was so beautiful that the riders got a round of applause (24.56).
Recently, I visited the Spanish Riding School again on September 2015 and learned that videoing is no longer allowed anymore. Upon my return home, I discovered this video tape in my closet and was quite lucky that this video is still in pristine condition. I went to the store and picked up a VHS to DVD converter. Then digitally remastered the video and upload it on KZfaq. I felt a great sense of accomplishment to post such a rare video! I'm very lucky and thankful that I was able to rescue this rare video just in the nick of time before the original VHS tape disintegrated!
I hope you will enjoy this rare video of the Spanish Riding School morning exercise.

Notice how all the stallions are in snaffles (not double bridles as in formal performance), and how kind and soft the riders' hands are. Giving hands. The horses are relaxed and forward. They look as if they are enjoying themselves and are in harmony with the rider. THIS is great horsemanship. May the Spanish Riding School return to its roots, restore its experienced riders to their positions, and go back to honoring its great traditions in preserving and passing on unsullied classical horsemanship to present and future generations. Austria, this is your jewel, your heritage, and your sacred trust. The time to save the Riding School is now.

+Robert Santner There's also Klaus Krzisch (entering at 10.48) who rode the Solo for many years with his unique Siglavy Mantua. Such a shame you don't see such art of riding any more today :,( Kottas, Krzisch and also Hans Riegler were a tremendous loss for the School.

+C1r5a19 Wow! That is so awesome you know Klaus! I will certainly find out about him. It is such a shame there is not much of classical riding anymore indeed.... I hope someday that there will be a revival of this art of riding to the likes of Kottas and Krzisch. I feel lucky to be a part of classical riding. I am also happy to be helping to preserve and record the centuries old tradition.

+Robert Santner Hehehe, yes - lucky me, I know ;-))) He is simply amazing as a rider and teacher with immense knowledge, talent, passion and sensitivity for the horses - and he's also a wonderful person. There's a video of him riding Siglavy Mantua I in the Solo here on youtube, have you seen that? Mantua was already 26 years old by then, it was their very last public performance after 23 years together.... The understanding and connection between the two of them is just breathtaking. Both Krzisch and Arthur Kottas entered the School as young boys while it was still led by the legendary Alois Podhajsky - talking to them always feels like having a direct link to the 450 years of history of the "Spanische" and the tradition of the old masters.... I do hope you are right! It's so sad that their knowledge and the art of training horses the classical way is every day more sacrificed to time, money and profit issues today - but it's against the nature of the horse! :,(

I sure hope so! I'd wish there is something I can do to help keep alive the tradition of classical riding! I am a big fan of Alois Podhasjky. He was the godfather of classical riding! It is such a shame that quality is sacrificed for profit, greed and most of all instant gratification.......

Lippizaner mature late. Thats why training starts later. Do never expect caprioles from a 4 or 5 year old lippizaner stallion.....He is still a teenager....needs to find balance underneath a rider, build up trust,muscles,etc!!! Recommend to read about the training methods of Klaus Balkenhol( former very succesfull trainer of the US dressage team). A horse must always be allowed to stay a horse.

i am not sure i like this style ..the horses seem heavy ..that's just a taste thing...its not as athletic or something ..and i know in reality its highly athletic ...it just seems stiff..why do i think the horses seem heavy can anyone explain that to me? Is it just me?? like i would feel they LOOK heavy in the hand and heavy on the ground. I may not know what i am talking about but i am being honest its not aesthetic to look at. But what do i know??

I agree, this is far from the lightness the Spanish Riding School used to have, the riders' hands are not quiet, constantly pulling and the horses are all BTV charging around on the forehand. People hold them on a pedestal but all I see is fat white ponies with oversized riders charging around looking like they're about to land on their noses

Many of these horses are still young yet, have not even changed into their fully grown white colors. They are still in training for many years to come. Don't judge the youngsters of now, wait and see when they are fully matured. And this type of riding is not for everyone. I'm sure that you are more used to modern day regular Dressage horses that are thinner in bone and lighter in weight. But for one thing, don't forget the history of Dressage, and where it came from. This is where it all started.

I love the academic art of riding but this is not what it's supposed to be. Way to short reins wich are not allowing the horse to have an open, working back. Kicking hard in the horses stomach and giving the horse no rest after it did right after is also an awful thing when it comes to riding on a higher level. I also saw a documentary and it said that when it comes to the "Spanish riding school", there're multiple cases of cutted tendons only for "the show". I stopped trusting this institution many years ago.

There is not even one that keeps a steady and flexible contact with the reins. Always pulling at the inside rein. Pulling and losing, pulling and losing. This makes the sour back. Terrible riders.
@u.v.s.5583
@u.v.s.5583 6 жыл бұрын
You misunderstand what a steady and flexible contact means. The inner hand moves in all three dimensions looking to dissolve any tension, how is that always pulling? Why would this make sour back? The technique these guys use is way above your head, and YET this does not mean that you are a terrible rider. There is more than one horse friendly way to ride a horse.

Its to create the 'bend'..which is different to 'flexion'. It's not just done from the reins though.
