I ran into a problem recently with my 2007 Chrysler Town and Country. I got a flat, changed the tire, then couldn't get the cable to wind back up. Even the tire place couldn't get it to crank back up into place. So i took the entire spare tire bracket off the car and finally was able to wench it back up.
Changing the spare tire on the Town & Country / Dodge Caravan is hard enough. The tire is right in the middle, you have to use the pole to lower it down and pull it out from under the car. Then close the rusted butterfly clips to get the tire off. Not easy to do on the side of the road.

Guys you never put it back underneath the back...you throw away all mechanisms and you store the spare inside the vehicle cleaned and covered up. I have take an actuall tire with a rim from a junk yard for 30$ and keep it inside with a 4way and a harbor freight jack. They take a little space (plenty left for me) but it's worth it when you get a flat in a rain snow etc...trust me save the nightmare!

That sounds like a better idea....got me a spare and going to store it inside with bungee chords and a freight jack and a star lug wrench..

In a minivan that is usually a family-hauling vehicle, this is complete impractical. But I suppose if you have the space for it then not a bad idea.

Where the rivets are, drill those out and work on the part. Reinstall using bolts. No springs to be afraid of. And use JB-80. Not WD-40. JB-80 does not dry. If you are going to purchase one of these vans, be sure the part is one of the first things you check. I've had three of these vans and checked all three right away, and found no issues with any of them. Simply lowering it some, every now and then, keeps it working for when you need it.

I did just this but lost the bolts *smh* do you know the length and thread size of the bolts that mount the hoist to the underside of a t&c 2005?

This was more what I was looking for. An explanation of how the thing works, so I can trouble shoot it, if/ when the time comes. I would guess mine has the original factory tire up there, but don't know for sure. If I make it through winter not having to do this, I believe I'm going to, in the driveway on a nice day and get it all oiled up again.

I strongly suggest not to pull on the cable hard from the side or use the winch to pull the tire back under (puts side load on the cable) . Either can kink the cable which will then fail to wind up properly and jam.

If the butterfly that this gentlemen lubricated won't free up easily, message me. I took the butterfly apart and quickly and cheaply redesigned it to function smoothly.

Thanks for the video. I am guessing the issue was when you wound it back up after putting your spare on you didn't put the flat tire on the cable and therefore there was no tension on the cable as it wound and that is what allowed it to get jammed. In the future if you are winding it without a tire on maybe just hold some resistance against the cable as you wind.

Good point. Ya that first time winding it up there was no tire/tension on the cable and it jammed. After that we did put tension on it while tightening but the jam had already happened.

I had this problem. I drilled out the rivets and found that where the cable connects to the reel was frayed out from the molded on at the factory connector. I went to the u pull it yard and got a "new" one. now if i could find the damn bolts to put it back on.

Ya, drill rivets, but solve problem? The cable end doesn't seat inside slot in spool, so it bulges out and get caught inside opening of plastic guide, so spool can't turn. Design flaw. Need to get cable to sit flat, maybe cut seating hole and pull all of cable inside of spool.

You should have put 3 in one oil in where the cable is going into the circular wind up.

Fixed it by pushing cable end snug in seating, holding it there with screw. Drill hole in spool: no more snagging by bulb of metal.

someone suggested to drill out the rivets, open up the mechanism. Then you can see where it's snagged. Luckily mine started working after i messed with it

You rotate that square nut and the tire should drop down. Mine was all rusted and needed to be pulled down.

"Cant fix it, its a sealed unit" WHAT? drill those out and fix it if necessary. sorry, but the problem solving skills of modern day people scare me sometimes. 100 years ago, people just got the job done regardless of the obstacles.

From Leo: What an ignorant design, and an awkward location of the mechanism. The Caravans designed before daimlier had the tire hoist by the back bumper, where a person changing a tire would already be.

Dodge is such a crap. They can not even make a good spare tire holder. They holder only need to keep working for less than 10 times during life time of a minivan.
