We rely on our favorite go-to instruments to capture new ideas as they're forming. We know those instruments well and they help us act quickly to grab that inspiration before it's gone. But what happens if we don't have any ideas cooking yet? Sometimes those favorites are so familiar that we fall into routines and habits that makes sparking new ideas harder for us. The solution is to try entirely new instruments and effects to see how getting out of our comfort zone can create a fresh approach to music making.
In this tutorial, Ryan does just that by building a new idea using instruments new to him. The quick inspiring workflow of Reason remains but the sounds and instruments are coming courtesy of Native Instrument's Komplete Select.
00:00 - Intro: Spark new ideas by breaking the routines
00:49 - Using Reason with VST-plugins from Native Instruments
01:31 - Getting started with The Gentleman Piano from Kontakt
02:24 - How to instantly bounce a MIDI-track to an audio track
03:04 - Exploring Massive from Native Instruments
03:45 - Find new ways to use your VST-plugins with Reason player devices
06:27 - How to create glitchy percussion with Newschool
07:38 - Mixing
08:23 - Using Native Instruments Replika Delay as a send effect
09:13 - Basslines with NI Monarch Monophonic Synthesizer
10:00 - Create guitar style plucks using NI Prism with Note Echo, Dual Arpeggio and Scales & Chords
12:01 - A simple beat with Komplete Selects Drum Lab
12:29 - Outro

I like how note echo can be combined with chords in order to create harmonies outside the basic triads what we're all used to. I've been working more diligently on adding those harmonies and other accidentals into compositions; this has the ability to make it much easier.

It is so pleasing to see a video made by Propellerhead that is endorsing another company's products. I hate it when manufacturers try to control people and get them to only use their stuff. This video demonstrates the confidence of Propellerhead and embraces the spirit of sharing. It embraces creativity. It makes me want to stay with Reason that much more. Thank you guys for being strong and mature in your views. Props to props. Cheers. Nice video too by the way.

We have always felt that whatever helps you make the best and most music, is the right thing to use. It's why we invented ReWire sync for inter-app connectivity many years ago, and which is now used by many apps beyond Reason. Thanks for the kind words! /ryan

Please never stop doing these videos. It's so refreshing that you seem to put priority on helping people make music and think in different and unique ways rather than trying to push products and features. Hell, watching these videos gets me more hyped on Reason than regular advertising would. Just picked up Lite, hoping to upgrade in the future. :)

I have an economical question here. Why would I invest in an external VSTs if Reason 10 comes with awesome refills? I understand that VST support is added beginning with 9.5 I've never used a VST. I always use refills with effects and I good to go. Would somebody explains why do I need a VST if I have tons of refills already? Does a VSTi sound better? What is the difference between a ReFill and a VST in terms of sound quality? (not in terms of technical specs)
@brodysdaddy
@brodysdaddy 5 жыл бұрын
You really don't if you're good with Reason. The midi controller he is using in video is by Native Instruments and comes with all those VSTs for "free", ($600 controller). The people I know with large VST collections are just very compulsive people in the first place, and hardly use them all.
@anthonydiaz3386
@anthonydiaz3386 5 жыл бұрын
@@brodysdaddy As far as I know, refills are ver RAW sounds which means I have to add layers, effects, EQ, ... etc in order to sound good. VSTs come engineered already with the possibility to further tweaking them when needed. Correct me if I am wrong ?

Well first of all, in this video I'm using Komplete Select ($199) and not Komplete Ultimate (which is less than your quoted price anyway) - but no, the point of the video is to spark new ideas - try something new. Komplete Select was a perfect example for ME because it's a collection of instruments and effects like what I'm used to with Reason but things I haven't tried yet. It gave me a way to explore new things that are part of a collection without just randomly going out for different synths each time like "Okay let's try Sylenth... okay let's add FM8... how about er... Sausage Fattener?" It's just a nice narrative way to operate within a collection for the video. And they sound good and inspired me, so that helps too. :) /ryan

I love the sentiment of this video... That you need to force yourself to write music in new ways. Not sure I like that I need new plugins to do that. Better would have been a video of ways to achieve that using stock plugins.
@RyanHarlin
@RyanHarlin 6 жыл бұрын
New is whatever is new to you. Patches you haven't tried, stock instruments you might overlook, playing instruments in unintended ways like bass patches played up high, and even scales or keys you don't write it. Whatever is new for you will create new ideas. You're right, you don't need to leave Reason to do that but the illustration of the point for this video seemed to be better made if I did. Thanks for watching! /ryan

You dont need to buy Instruments. Want something new and inspiring? Just load some free synths, samplepacks and/or analog synth emulations. Maybe one of them sounds a little bit crappy, but thats what it is about, unconventional sounds!

Propellerhead How did you change the theme like that? Also get the images for the NI stuff to show up in the Instruments section vs just the title? And as well to show up in the S49 MK2? I’m having those issues and want to fix them! Thanks!
@ReasonStudios
@ReasonStudios 6 жыл бұрын
Both good questions, Versatile. The theme is changed via the Preferences. On the General preferences page there is a little section that I think is called "Theme" and the choices are the default, the Blue theme I used in this video and Grey which is even darker. As for the instrument to show up in the browser... when you have a VST open, there is a button called "Screenshot" VST window's button bar that will take a snapshot of that VST in whatever state it currently is set up and now display it in the Reason Browser and also on the VST rack device's screen. /ryan

Mariusz Bibik I thought that, but I think the rack layout entices people to add so many effects. Like the entire reason work flow is dragging more and more modules into the rack so you’ll run into dsp issues obviously. In say ableton, your not as enticed to use even half the amount of modules as they start to clutter and get lost in that small view at the bottom of the screen.
