We all probably know the voice is an instrument but what if we could play the human voice more like the way we play piano or drums? What if we could reimagine vocal material we might already have and use it in ways that make our songs sound more unique and modern?
Well that's exactly what we'll be doing in this tutorial. Ryan is back with another Super Neat Beat Cheat Sheet to demonstrate a technique he has for cutting up vocals and playing them back via sampler. The result of a few razor cuts and clip trims is a totally fun way to reinterpret and restructure the vocal tracks you have, just waiting to get some sampling magic.

thanks for showing the steps in doing this! Can't wait to play around with it. It's a lot to learn at first but looks like it's pretty easy once you've done it a few times. Definitely a less is more technique. It was way overboard when it was overlapping lyrics.

Now, if NN-XT would get an upgrade it would be the best thing in the world. For example, if i load a longer audio clip into this sampler it is so ANNOYING to have to hold the "shift" key while moving the mouse from one side of my room to the other just to be able to set that perfect starting point for the sample using the "start" knob. I know there are workarounds to this but i LOVE the NN-XT and i wish it was treated with more respect by the Props. Also, I loved this tutorial. Thank you, Ryan!

I first discovered Reason in 2002/3 when it was a very early version, maybe even v1. Anyhow, I really liked it even then, but the general vibe was that it was a bit of a "toy" DAW, not really something to create music on professionally, like FruityLoops or whatever. However, Reason has evolved into an INCREDIBLE piece of software, totally out there for professional use. But, I do wonder if, even now, it has shaken off that reputation. I really do hope so, because from what I have seen of other DAWs, Reason is (for me and IMHO of course!) the best that's out there, and thoroughly deserves to be recognised as such. Any thoughts on that? :-)

Not that this isn't a cool gimmick, but this is kinda why every song in the Top 40 Pop Charts this year sounds like a Pogo remix. By the time you've seen a tutorial on how to do something, you can be sure it's already played out.

2:42 Is there a tutorial or another vid that describes what was done here with the vocals? It says it was "doubled, upwards compressed, and pitch edited" and the end result is vocal clips that segue into one another seemlessly, even with space in between. I would love to replicate this effect but am unsure of what precisely you did. I can see you made two audio tracks with the vocal clip, but the one on the bottom looks like it's been compressed. Is that really all it takes to get vocals to sound like that? I feel like there has go to be more to it simply because it sounds so nice

366) Two kick drums sound better than one kick drum, almost always 367) If you can’t play it fast, play it slow with feeling 368) The catchiest melody will come to you at the least convenient time 369) Bass guitar playing synth lines - bad move. Synth bass playing bass guitar lines - great move 370) Lazer tom toms are never the right call 371) Oboes are like clarinets with a HPF filter on them. They’re the trance arp of the orchestra 372) If I’m distorting a vocal, it better be as cool as Beck or Beastie Boys or else I’m blowing it 373) Separate tracks for each drum makes for good mix technique. Separate tracks for each drum hit, bad technique 374) When isn’t banjo the right instrument to add to heavy metal? Answer: never 375) 140bpm at half time doesn’t feel the same as 70bpm. It just doesn’t, m’kay? 376) Half rhymes in rap count for 3x as many rap-points 377) One oscillator square wave subtractive synths were all we REALLY needed in life 378) Castanets will never substitute tambourines 379) Some bands are better live than on record. Other bands just aren’t good anywhere. 380) Vocoders are a conspiracy put forth by the French to make everyone else feel unskilled as producers 381) Some of the best hooks sound weird on first listen, but catchy the next time (see also: Rock Lobster) 382) I’ve spent far more time editing and covering up my lack of piano skill than I would’ve spent learning piano

do you have a tutorial about mixing and mastering a song to make it sound proffessional?
@ReasonStudios
@ReasonStudios 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Alex I've got a whole series called "Ryan's Picks for Quick Mix Fix Tricks" that I do from time to time. If you look on our channel you can find them. I'll attempt to link them here as well... There's one on the benefits of mixing in mono to help your mix sound professional: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipOEo7N937jUo4k.html Two Knobs That'll Change your Mix: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p6dhas-KrLLVoJ8.html Finally Understanding Levels and Clipping: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipOEo7N937jUo4k.html But I also have more videos in this Super Neat Beat Cheat Sheet Series worth checking out because they all contain mix tips too - like the one on Liquid Drum and Bass covers parallel processing, for example. Thanks for watching! I considering doing a mastering tutorial soon but I want to make sure it's done right. There's some really terrible videos out there where people overprocess their masters just to make the video comparison from before and after sound more dramatic. Mastering is a subtle art that doesn't lend itself to video tutorials but I might try. /ryan
@amnishubby24
@amnishubby24 7 жыл бұрын
Do you have a video on how to use automation clips?
@ReasonStudios
@ReasonStudios 7 жыл бұрын
Both good questions, Alex. As for mastering, I'm considering how to do one because it's an often requested topic. The problem is that mastering is a really subtle artform and videos usually only work when you can REALLY tell the difference. The risk is to overdue the mastering to make it more obvious when you A/B compare them - but then I'm teaching bad mastering technique. I'm still giving that one some thought, so I can teach you all good info that is clear to see as well. As for the automation one, I tend to cover automation whenever the topic comes up in various tutorials but what sort of use of automation clips did you have in mind? Thanks for watching and asking! /ryan
