I've been saying this. Calypso was big in the US in the 30s, 40s and 50s in the US.

It can be traced back to the Ewe Nation of Ghana, they call it Halo in Puerto Rico its called Controversia i love rap battle

Sparrow won, that's for sure. But Melody improvised some great lines. I especially like the last one, full of alliterations : In a WHile I'll Be WHining Behind your Back. Genius !

Thanks! I have the album of this, but very scratched. Pink Gin and Calypso, recorded live in 1956 I think.

I see Lord Kitchener The Mighty Sparrow, not sure if that's Lord Melody left of Sparrow, there's Pal Joey Lewis hidden behind the guitar. The banner looks like COOK CARIBBEAN, that was a record pressing plant on a side street west of lower Richmond St . My Dad worked there and I was lucky to see how the records were made.
