Hey Borce, my name is Ryan. I've been spearfishing my whole life and I'm originally from San Diego. I live in Port Angeles now, and I spend 5 days straight every week in Neah Bay for work. I usually am fishing from a kayak after work especially in summer time, but I like the Jetty a lot too. I left my dive gear back home but more and more as the fishing slows down in winter, I find myself wanting to dive for them. I don't know if you still come out here, but Im here every day almost as I said for work so when I can get my gear sent up to WA id be down to take the yak out to the jetty or waddah or the cape area. I know some good spots that I'm sure you do too

I’d love to come out and join you Spaceman! I haven’t been out to Neah Bay in a few years but its that time I return. I also have a kayak so I’ll make sure to bring my kayak with me and we can go out and do a couple of dives. Let’s stay in touch and make it happen!

I’m looking to get into spear fishing on the Washington coast. I used to live there and even got really into scuba diving all over the sound and offshore. I now live in Idaho and try to make trips to the coast at least 4 times a year. My question is what suit are you using? I’ve used a 7mm semi dry suit while scuba diving and it worked good but you have a lot more movement when doing scuba compared to free diving. I’ve been looking at an open cell 5mm. Lemme know your thoughts. Great video and keep it up!
@borce32
@borce32 5 жыл бұрын
Daniel It really depends on the type of diving you want to do and if you plan on doing it year round. I’d recommend going with a 7mm open cell since you can use it year round. I also have a 5mm that I use in the summer. The 7mm was great when I went up to Alaska since the waters are a bit colder up there. The suit ai have is a Cressi Tracina. I like the high pants over the long johns style wetsuit. I have the same suit in a 7 and 5mm. Let me know if you’re in the are, lets do some diving.

What part of your gear do you think was your best investment …… what’s been your worst so far and are you wearing a open cell 7mm suit rock boots and open heel fins or booties and closed fin
@borce32
@borce32 5 жыл бұрын
diverdoyle I use booties with closed heel fins. Best investment is definitely the spear gun, without it no fish 🙂 I dont think any gear is a bad investment because you need everything in order to be able to dive and fish. If I had to pick something I’d say my reel on my gun since I already have a float line that I use so the reel is not required.

Michael Lieb Hey man, I would recommend joining a facebook group in your area. I am sure there is tons of spearfishermen. That will allow you to get to know people that do it and they will help you out. Also I would focus on your breath hold and being able to dive to at least 20 feet. Taking a freediving/ spearfishing class would also help you out. After that its all about practice and doing it on a regular basis. Make sure to stay safe and take your time, start in a pool and shallow then slowly transition to the ocean starting from a safe environment.

My brother is getting stationed in Washington and I was planning on coming to visit him at some point. Would love to do some spearing while I am there and share fish with all his army buddies. Been doing some research and everyone in Washington seems super against spearing. Almost to the point where they are making violent threats on forums. Have you had any experience with that?
@borce32
@borce32 5 жыл бұрын
Averagefishin sorry to hear that man. I have had a few bad experiences of fishermen on the rocks complaining about me passing in front of them but I dont let it get to me. It rarely happens and 95% of my experiences are positive. I’ve untangled dozens of fishermens lines from the rocks and once you do that they respect you. We are the ones risking our lives diving for the fish, they are fishing from the docks so technically we should have right of way. My experience is if you are nice to them, they will be nice to you.

@borce32
@borce32 7 жыл бұрын
cameron phillips I'd recommend the gun for sure but it depends on what kind of fish you are going for. I would not hunt anything larger than lings with this gun. The gun is super rugged and well made. You can bang it up and it will still fire just fine. I would maybe recommend the elite series 38 special woody because I've lost a bunch of fish due to shooting them too close and the spear not being able to exit the gun all the way. The elite series does not have that issue but overall I love this gun!

Sweet gun man, I almost have the exact same gun but did get the elite. It felt like it didn't have any range out of the box tho. I added an additional band and I'm pretty happy with the range I get now. I just have to pop off a band or two when I find a ling in a hole. You can always switch the muzzle on your gun if you want to change it up.

Nice video, but you knifed that crab while it was mating with the female. That could have potentially created 100s of crabs for the future. Its not illegal, but getting a couple of small claws isn't worth it in my opinion. Also, in your comments you said you only took males. Well that was by complete accident lol. You stabbed it before you checked.

Hey Zoe, you can take both males and females for red crab. They dont have the same regulations as Dungeness Crab. Also I dont take red crabs anymore, they are not worth it anymore in my opinion. This was one of the few times I took some. Also Males are much larger so they are easy to identify even under water.

seems like youre ignoring size limits on some of these fish
@borce32
@borce32 6 жыл бұрын
madeitsoicanwatch none of the lingcod in this video were under 22 inches, as a matter of fact all of these fish were 25 inches and up. I pass up many juvenile lingcod without shooting them or disturbing them and I don’t take chances on those that I believe are close to the limit. However I have shot 1 or 2 lingcod under the limit barely but that was when I began the sport and I didnt have any experience. It’s really hard to judge the size underwater or by only seeing their head popping out of a hole. Now I’m able to judge their size based on my past experiences and I try not to shoot anything under 25 inches. If a spear fishermen ever said they have never shot an undersize lingcod then I’ll tell you that they are full of shit. We have all done it by mistake a few times. No one is perfect.
