How long does a dive usually last? From when you begin to finding and spearing a fish to when you surface. I want to learn to do this and have been practicing my breath holds. I can swim two full lengths of a ~25 meter pool underwater on one breath but i'm struggling by the end of it. It's about a 1:30. Static I'm at about 3:15. What would you recommend being able to do before you attempt actual spear fishing? Thanks.

I know you asked this 2 years ago but 2 to 4 minutes should be fine for casual spearfishing.

Awesome video man! Headed to Netarts this week. Is this the Barview Jetty? Or are you guys actually inside the bay?
@borce327 жыл бұрын
Ben Pruett Yup it's the Barview Jetty. I was there today but forgot my weight-belt :( ended up not going in but I'll be there tomorrow as well at high tide. Hope you have a great time at Netarts and get some big fish 🙂

Hey I know this is an older video but can anyone suggest what kind of wetsuit for Oregon coast. I live in reedsport Oregon next to Winchester bay
@borce325 жыл бұрын
jeremy hausmann I’d look for an open cell 5mm or 7mm wetsuit. Cressi, Mako, JBL and Sporasub are a few good brands but I would honestly reach out to Dan Semrad @ Oregon Freediving Company for more info. He is a pro at this stuff and can steer you in the right direction.

I’ve heard stuff about rupturing a lung when surfacing if you don’t exhale is this tru? Could you still rupture a lung if it’s a 12 ft deep river?
@borce326 жыл бұрын
Professor Pedals Yes that can happen if you are scuba diving however not likely if you are freediving. You can rupture a lung from “packing” which is forcing as much air in your lungs before you dive. When you descend your lungs contract and become smaller and when you ascend they return to their normal size at surface. The only way I see that happening is if you meet your scuba buddy at the bottom and inhale some of his air and hold your breath as you ascend. Normally I always exhale a bit when I come up from a dive but thats mainly from the excess c02 build up from the dive thats causing me to want to exhale and breathe.

Are there sharks out there? I spearfish in my river and I'm gonna start going in the ocean but ik it's perfect temps and stuff for sharks
@borce326 жыл бұрын
MacNCheese I’ve never came across a shark nor do I wish to do so. I’m sure they’re around but this is in the bay and we are right by the rocks. They normally stay out of the bays but I’m sure some find their way in. I know I’ve seen killer whales come into the bay.

I know the thing to do is reference odfw but I’m here so will ask you. (First awesome video next time I’m in Newport, may do this along the jetty) question 1. Crab don’t need to be a certain sex or size? Crab, shouldn’t they be left alive til their cooked? Question 3 I guess, aren’t there size limits on Lingcod? Or are there different refs for spearfisherman? Awesome videos though thanks!
@borce322 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris, same regulations apply for us as all other anglers. No size limit on red crab so you can take male or female. I believe Lingcod size limit is 21 or 22 inches. I personally dont kill my crab until I clean them anymore but used to get them with my knife for convenience. I have not heard the rule that they need to be alive until cooking.
@ChrisJBrown722 жыл бұрын
@@borce32 ah red crab Oky, I have always thought that’s the best practice for Crab, Lobster, and crayfish is never cook an eat the dead ones. Maybe wrong about that(your still kicking lol) great videos watched all of your diving ones. Must have to develop a good eye for judging size(especially the far off ones) all experience. I freedive lakes for crayfish, I gotta get myself into open water. (Would a Hawaiian sling work or are black rock bass etc hard to get up close too?
@borce322 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisJBrown72 thanks for the support. Yes you get better at guessing over time. Have I ever shot an under, absolutely. But I learned that if its questionable I dont shoot. I only go for 25inch+ now, just to make sure I dont get close to the size limit. Hawaiian sling totally works. Might be harder for lingcod but rockfish are plentiful and super dumb. They’ll come up to you and check you out. I’ve had a few come nibble at my spear tip out of curiosity 😂

Why do you prefer spear fishing compared to normal fishing? Were is the fun in shooting it once?
@borce326 жыл бұрын
That random white guy Its pretty awesome getting to see fish in their natural environment and how they interact. For me its the love of diving that gets me out there and into the water, the fish are just a bonus :)

Borce Atanasov yeah i understand the feeling of just getting out their in the water, just me personally i like fighting the fish to show whos better 😂

How think is your wetsuit ? Is it 5 or 7 mm Thanks
@borce325 жыл бұрын
LIONKILLER1986 In this video i’m using a 5mm but I also have the same suit in a 7mm. You can get away with a 5mm year round here but I go up to Alaska and thats where the 7mm comes handy.

Hey I want to go spearfishing off barview but I have trouble clearing one of my ears when equalizing. Any tips?
@borce3211 ай бұрын
I’d say start with doing some pool diving or take a freediving course. That will help you tremendously to stay safe and learn how to dive. The key to equalizing is doing it prior to feeling the tightness on your ears. I equalize every second when I dive, so roughly every 1 meter / 3ft.

Oregon Freediving in Portland runs courses. Currently trying to figure out pools due to coronavirus. But still running class sessions once a month and building up a backlog of pool and open water students waiting for a pool.

Hey sidney smith ya dipshit, you can keep 5 greenling and at the time this was filmed, 7. Check your damn facts before you get all high and mighty you stupid ASS. You probably arent even a real spearfisher, lol, your probably a damn peta activist trying to hinder the forward progress of real spearfishers 😂😂😂.
