This lens replaced my Tam 28-75 *and* my Sony 70-300... in effect saving me $500+. I looked at the keeper photos I took (non iPhone) from 2015 to 2020. Under 4% were above 200mm. That says to me " *buy* a 28-200 and *rent* a 200-600 when you specifically need more range and can't crop to 300."

Sounds like a great lens. I really like the way you reviewed it, Leigh! More on the practical side of things. I wonder if I should rather grab the 28-200 together with the 17-28 to cover my landscape stuff and get one or two primes for portraits instead of buying the full "holy trinity" (17-28, 28-75, 70-180).

I have the old 18-200mm 3.5-6.3 version for Sony APSC and works pretty nice! (no fancy bokeh or action in low light but still, I really like it)

How is it with the cropped sensor? I just got a used sony a6500 for my first camera and really need an all in one lens for my first lens. I'm concerned that 28mm will be too high with a cropped sensor

Hi friend, this is the ONLY video that showed the range from 28-200 while standing in one spot. I greatly appreciate this and you actually sold me on this lens. Im a new photographer and was looking for a lens for my pre-ordered sony a7IV

Hello Leigh, and thanks for the review! As youtube compression is what it is, is this lens sharp enough to give the a7Riv justice? I know it is no prime lens, but will you notice a difference with 60 mpxl vs 24 mpxl on e.g. A7iii? Or is the lens diminishing that difference? I am myself thinking of getting an A7Riii and this lens.

I have used this lens for a week now and had close to 1000 shots with it with a A7RII body. I could get sharp shots at 200mm at dusk, without shake. Pretty damn detailed at 200mm even. Pleasantly stunned with the clarity of this lens, which complements the 42MP sensor. I can crop in to a decent photo without losing clarity for general use as this lens packs micro details! Even at full price of AUD 1099 , this is a big saver lens. Feel like I'm gonna keep it , after this review. Any review, I am hearing positive results! two downsides though. AF is very fast , still not snappy as when I'm using Canon 18-135mm STM on a Canon 700D even. So not for fast moving subjects.( maybe higher cameras will drive this lens better) Quite a lot of purple fringing, which might be able to fix, but yuk sometimes. Macro focus distance at 200mm is not so good. If it had a little more close focus, it would have made this lens an awesome macro lens. I am willing to hear from someone how it performed with a macro tube.

I have an A7RII and have been looking for a good lens for landscape/street, as I'm currently using a Sony 1.8 50mm. Do you think I should go with this lens? or save up a little more for the Sony 24-105 F/4 ?

@@iamlumpy If you plan to do events and some portraits too, I think the 24-105 might suit your purposes better. The native AF and constant f stop can make a difference, plus the additional 4mm on the wide end. But one can't argue the versatility of 28-200. I do find the 24-105 has less purple fringing.

I am very impressed by the quality of the images you took with this lens, especially at the longer end of the zoom range which is normally poor on a super zoom, it is just the lack of stabilisation which puts me off owning one. It is very rare in 2020 to find a super zoom with no stabilisation, especially in this price range.

It is because it is dedicated to mirrorless a7 camera which all have ibis. I would not take it on non ibis camera.

I have used this lens for several years on both an a6400 and a7iii. While not perfect, it is sharp and has a reasonable aperture range. Using proper techniques produces good results even with non-IBIS bodies. It’s a great travel lens as it is versatile and minimizes the need to change lenses in wet or dusty environments.

Wide range zooms are the best thing since sliced bread .... especially when you’re out in the field. I dread changing lenses out on the trail, particularly since they allow dust and grit to get inside the camera & on the sensor.

Andrew I agree, but remember, esp with a sharp prime and lots of megapixels (esp A7R2, etc), you can do a surprising amount of "zooming" by cropping.

Is it better to buy a Sony 18-105 lens or a Tamron 28-200 for the alpha6000? I know that the tamron has a bigger "shot" but I wonder which one takes better photos at the focal lengths I use most often, around 16-28 and 50-100. I also have a kit for the sony 16-50 and 55-210. I would like to have one lens for everything :)

I appreciate the you go and use your gear for the review. So many big KZfaqrs that do reviews just do review after another as every manufacturer lends them gear long ahead of release date that they use one item for one day then on to the next new thing. Horrible.

Hi, good review; I shoot sports, like baseball. Do you think this lense can provide decent result by shooting at 1/2000 at 180mm ISO auto? I used to shoot using FE 70-200 F2.8 GM using A73, but I look for AIO lens that can provide not-so-bad result. Thanks to reply. Cheers!

I wasn't aware there was an earlier version on the e-mount. I got mine among from among the first batch. Was there any change from my earlier e-mount to this later version you speak of?

@@Ni5ei I think @gelenn oc is mistaken. I don't think there is an earlier version on e-mount. He probably has the 28-75mm designed for DSLR lenses in Nikon or Canan made by Tamron. It's a completely different lens with a completely different optical formula. He probably thinks that since it's made by Tamron, that this relatively newer e-mount lens is some kind of successor to that lens. It's not. I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure he's mistaken since I've seen absolutely nothing to indicate that there's anything other than this one Tamron e-mount lens in 28-75mm. I can't imagine they put out a newer one in such a short period of time. Then again, maybe he knows something we don't. I doubt it, but maybe...

Great review. I have a question that’s been bugging me I already have a Sony 24-105mm in my stash. Do you think buying the Tamron 28-200 is a big overlap and waste of money? I need the longer reach though for taking shots from a distance. I am tempted to buy this 28-200 as most reviews are fairly favorable. I expect to travel a lot in the next two years so this will be used mostly for outdoor photography. Your input will be most welcome and will weigh in into my decision.

Hi thank you for your video! Love the close shot, it is truly impressive. I wonder if you use the manual focus or just auto focus? I tried this lens and couldn't really get the ultra shot image...Is that because my is A7 iii only :0

You should try the tamron 17-28 f2.8 for close shot. I bought it for my wife and her plants. It beats everything in the market. From the first photos we took we understood this is an amazing lens. Combined with this 28-200, it would be a great duo.

Hi. My two cents. I've had my Z 24-200 for all of one week now and I'm finding it very usable and very sharp. I own several primes in Z or F mount that I use when I'm having a «prime» mood. The 24-200 is, just as described, a great one-lens walkaround. The Z6 lets me dial-in practically any ISO I need so I just don't care about f/4-6,3 because bokeh means primes anyway. I would also like to hear Snapchick thoughts obout the Nikon 24-200. It costS a bit more but seems worth it to me when comparing the short-end 24 vs 28.

Hello, thank you for the wonderful review...I purchased this lens based on the positive reviews on KZfaq, but unfortunately it doesn't focus sharply beyond 130 mm. I first thought it was hand shake and shutter speed issue, but then when I tried to focus manually with a Sony A7iii on a tripod, by rotating the focus ring with my model 10 feet away from me but I could not get a sharp focus on her eyes at any distance!!! It also did not focus sharply at 200 mm for a sunset scene!. Your feedback is appreciated.

Its strange that this Tamron 28-200 can shoot at constant f/4.5 from 28-100. But yes its not as wide as 24

I was expecting Tamron making one for the Nikon Z. but then Nikon 24-200 is coming out very soon and it has VR and weather sealed for $170 more

The Tamron is all about speed and IQ. The Nikon lens does not play in the same division when it comes to speed at least. The Tamron can basically replace a 24-70 f2.8 for non-professional users. Besides the Tamron is weather sealed too. But I would not expect to for Canikon anytime soon. Tamron prioritizes Sony where they get access to the focus algorithms etc and don't have to reverse engineer everything.

I know it’s a year later I’m watching this but you missed some vital info, what apertures at key points in between 28 and 200 which we know so what is wide open at 35, 50, 85, 105, 135 basically all the standard primes lengths

Nice review, however, as I print quite large (30" x 40"), I don't think I would be inclined to use any "all-in-one" zoom, as there are too many compromises in image quality, especially when compared to primes. That said, have you compared the image quality of your Sony kit with the Nikon Z7 kit? Thank you!

We definitely all have different tolerances for clarity and there is no substitute for a prime lens but I'm incredibly impressed with the image quality of this lens. What do you print that large? I'm intrigued!

I already have the 17-28 f/2.8 and 28-75 f/2.8 which I both love. But I was pretty disappointed their next release was only 70-180 f/2.8 which, as far as I'm concerned, is really too short. I was hoping they would come up with 75-200 f/2.8 So right now I'm really thinking about getting the 28-200 instead even though it's not f/2.8 fixed aperture. It looks to be a very capable lens and in many situations it can even replace the 28-75 f/2.8

20mm is barely noticeable...and in exchange you get a MUCH smaller/lighter lens as compared to a 70-200/2.8.

It can be used on either, but its intended for full frame. APS-C lenses of this type typically start at 16-18mm. (so their "wide" end starts at a 24-28mm field-of-view, in full frame terms)

The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 for Sony e-mount currently the main lens on my Nikon Z7. I use the Techart Pro e-mount to z-mount autofocus adapter and it works fairly well. Maybe not well enough for professional work, but I'm an amateur. It's certainly better than the handful of adapter that go the other way adapting Nikon f-mount lenses to Sony e-mount bodies. That is just a really sad situation...

Tamron does have F mount lenses optimized for the APS-C sensor but they were introduced years ago and I do not have experience with them. They’re certainly worth a look though!

tamron itself admits autofocus-problems with the 28-200 on their website and is working on a firmware update

I didn't find any autofocus issues during my time with the lens and I can't find the issue you're referencing. I still have the lens and I'd like to check it out. Can you point me to where you're seeing the information on the issue?

@@trubbel1601 Thanks! That's interesting. I'm pretty sure I was using Continuous AF for everything, where there are no issues, so I'll look into this! I'm glad they know there's a problem, published an alert, and are working to fix it.

@@trubbel1601 Sony, Canon, and Nikon have all had similar problems in the past. Firmware updates are huge, especially in mirrorless cameras and lenses... And the public is huge in finding the weird little quirks that factory testing, no matter how thorough, simply won't.

@@trubbel1601 considering the overwhelmingly positive reviews about this lens, I suspect the issue hasn't happened to a great many people and may even be relegated to one or two older models (similar to the Sony 24-105 G which had to be firmware updated for better compatibility with older, first gen FE bodies... And that lens is considerably more than $720). This is the state of things in the industry. Back in the day you'd have to send in your camera or lens for the update or even a replacement. At least now it's a five minute fix at home and you're on your way.

No no no. Not a fan of all in one lenses. One lens for all does not exist ! Although it’s probably an awesome lens, a real photographer needs at least 3 different lenses in the kit and 2 bodies to hang round the neck like bling! The trade off is too high a price to pay for one lens. Love your reviews snapchick, keep it up. God Bless be safe.
