In this video I give my honest review of the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lens for Sony cameras. This newer lens can be used on both full frame and APS-C sensor Sony cameras.
Is this the ONLY lens you'll ever need?
Check out my review to find out. I've had my Tamron 28-200mm for a few months now and have taken it on several dedicated photo trips. I show the variety and quality of the imagery you can get with this lens with real world example shots from Yellowstone National Park, USA and also in Venice and the Dolomites area, Italy.

Super review and beautiful pics! I've had many very expensive GM and equivalent lenses. Funny enough i got rid of those and ended up with this lens (for personal use). Back to the basics. It reminds me of when i started in digital photography with my Canon a20. I focused more on the art and less on the gear. Sooooo i ended up where i started. Thanks for reminding me why i got this Tamron 28-200.

Thanks, Don. You inspired me to get this lens and pair it with my A6600. I am a complete beginner and I am super confident I have a setup that will last me years. Hope I can come close to recreating some of your work here!

A great video show casing the capabilities of this lens and travel inspirations. I appreciate that the quality is judged not based on some flat chart in a basement, but real life examples of powerful scenes displaying what it can do. There are somethings that just cannot be done in a lab, let alone be a source of inspiration.

I find this review is more about your photos, which are spectacular by the way, than about the specifics of the lense itself. But I'm just amazed at the pictures you took. I'm sure it was reproduced in Light room or similar but I enjoyed looking at them. If this lense can produce images like this I'm definitely looking at a one- lense do all in my travels, hikes, and even event photography. Thank you for sharing this, just wonderful!

Hi Kelly, Sure, I show lots of images in the review so folks can get the idea that this lens can produce nice images..and of course I like to show-off my images as well. What photographer doesn't? Honestly, I don't do much to my images in post. I shoot jpegs in the camera as this has always worked best for me. I highly appreciate your comments and I thank you for taking the time to watch and to comment.

Excellent video and beautiful shots there, Don! Sounds like a quite capable lens. I'm about to switch to Sony FF in the next couple of months and try to think quite pragmatic, also more on the practical side of things. I wonder if I should rather grab this very 28-200 together with the 17-28 to cover my landscape stuff and get a nice 85mm prime for portraits instead of buying the full "holy trinity" (17-28, 28-75, 70-180). What do you think?
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto Жыл бұрын
Hey, that seems like a very reasonable plan and would save you a bit of weight as well. I don't really do any serious portrait stuff so I personally skip the prime and I end up with 2 lenses for all my scenic work. This 28-200 and a 17-40mm. Never need anything more except on the rare occasion I do a night shot, then I use Tamron's 15-30mm f/2.8.

What a great video. NOW I am considering a 28-200 for my a7R IV, while my primary is the a1 with the 200-600 lens. Thoughts?
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Allen, thanks for watching. I think your idea is a great one. You'll have the 28-200 for travel and scenics and of course you have the best set-up out there for wildlife. I can't wait to get my hands on an A1. Both setups you'd have would offer plenty of cropping ability if needed. Nice!

Hi. Can you notice the issue at longer exposures at night with this Tamron, some people reports an halo or noise pattern at the frame's right edge with ISO 6400, 30sec exposures in 28mm
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. No I have not noticed such a thing but then I would never use your listed settings either. If doing a night shot of stars or the Milky Way I'd choose another (faster such as the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8) lens or if using this lens then I'd not shoot at ISO 6400.

It's obviously due to vignetting correction. There are over 2 stops of vignetting, which is actually pretty common.

I have this lens and it is indeed very convenient. I typically carry it with a Sony 16-35 f/2.8 GM in a small shoulder bag. I find a significant amount of color fringing with the 28-200, though, particularly on the edges, and the corner sharpness is good, but not great (my 24-105 is slightly better in this respect. I have used three copies of the lens, do I doubt these issues are any particular lens example. Don’t get me wrong, it is a very good lens, and I am definitely keeping it for casual travel situations, but I’m renting the Sony 20-70 f/4 to check it out on my trip to Death Valley next week. I am hopeful that I can pair it with the Sony 70-200 f/4 when it comes out later this year for better image quality with no more weight than my 16-35 GM and Tamron 28-200. If the f/4 does not show up, I will consider the 70-200 f/2.8 GM at 1/2 lb more weight.

I have a 28-75 f2.8 is it a good idea to sell that one and buy this as i need a lens that has more range? Or should i keep that one as well and add this one to my kit? Also hows the auto focus… some reviewers say theres an issue with the auto focus.
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes, sell the 28-75mm and get the 28-200mm. This will be better for you. I don't like having lenses that "overlap" in focal length because then you have to carry twice as much and don't gain anything. I find the AF on the 28-200mm perfect without any issues.

Hi, Yes I would if you'll be doing mostly video of slower moving subjects such as people and travel scenes. The versatility of the lens is great. It does maintain focus while doing videos pretty darn good.

Will this be a good lens for shooting moving images of wildlife and dogs? Thanks
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. This lens would not be my choice for wildlife or moving dog photography. I don't think the focal length is long enough and the lens isn't fast enough for that. If you mainly want to photograph such subjects the 100-400mm or 200-600mm Sony lenses would be better. Also good is the Tamron 150-500mm lens. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbpohblescylpZc.html

Your compositions are excellent. It might be the compression image degradation on KZfaq, but a lot of the images look a bit off, maybe too contrasty or some chromatic aberrations. Can you tell if the out of camera photos look like this or is it just KZfaq?
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the comment, yeah it's the compression degradation from KZfaq. I noticed it too, especially when I watch on my 55" high def TV. I'd not hesitate to print any of my images from this video at poster size and if I did they would look superb. I appreciate you watching!

Super nice 👍 I just found your channel and immediately subscribed after watching your video. Your content is more related to getting great pics rather than acquire expensive gear. I was looking to get Tamron 35-150 2-2.8 as a travel lens but now I think 28-200 might fit better. Did you ever feel the need for fast aperture while traveling, like for low light or put emphasis on your portraits? Also, do you reach for primes if you need to take primarily portraits or just consider zooms? Thanks.
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the nice comment. For me the 28-200mm works best because I am mainly a nature photographer and as such I tend to stop my lenses down a bit for scenics and even travel photos. I've never had a need for super fast lenses, primes or zooms. In low light I just use a tripod or higher ISO.
