Behind the bullet, the tip of a fencing blade is the second fastest-moving object in Olympic sports. Speed of Fencing captures the grace and movements of New York's top epee fencers. Using high-speed photography, amateur spectators will be able to see some of the fastest actions in all of sport for the first time.
For the untrained eye, a flick scores without notice. Body signals and feints are too acute for a novice. And what happens when someone blinks at the wrong moment? Fencing has some of the fastest moving objects in sport, which is arguably why it is hard to watch and not spectator friendly. All of these actions will be realized in slow motion with high-speed photography to allow the viewer to appreciate and see what happens in the mind of a trained fencer. These actions appear slower to show the speed in which the mind is calculating each action from years of training and repetition.

Got to meet Holly at an NAC event in SLC event and watched her fence. Told her how powerfull the video was for me. I watched my son fence for years and became our team armourer. When he stopped fencing I took it up and loved every minute of it. Wished I had the chance when I was younger, it's the best sport I've ever played.

I remember this video before the sappy music was added. It is a brilliant portrayal of epeé fencing slowed down so that anyone can see the split second decisions that are involved. Excellent!

Great video. Every time somebody asks me about what's going on in a fencing bout, I show them this video. It gives me time to explain what's going on. The music's pretty good, too.

When I coached fencing at Cornell in the late 70's, some of us were involved in a 16mm film entitled "The Art of Fencing" made as a project by an NYU grad student. In addition to set up bouts, we did a "duel at dawn" as well as personal interviews. However, visually, it did not approach the HD, slow-mo quality of this work. Nicely done!

Just sort of tripped over this video while casually browsing. Very cool production. I've never fenced (would love to!), but this is a nice interpretation of your sport here; I suspect it's something that really exhibits that personal experience the fencer must have. I'd really like to see it with a music track sans words.

At this moment, no. The camera we used was the Phantom HD Gold which retails for around $250,000.00 so it's way out of the USFA's budget to own. We rented it for the shoot and it would be more practical to rent it, but again it's a very expensive camera. Technology should catch up with a more affordable version in the next 10 years.

Movie swordfighting is trying to go for drama and the best storytelling. The best portrayal of swordfighting of a style similar to fencing is "The Duellists" (Ridley Scott's first big movie). Even in that, though, I recall they ran electric current through the blades to get impressive sparks!

And the speed element means you don't hold back. You might argue that sometimes you should, but the fact is that a lot of fencers coupé with great force and get a lot of points that way. Good fencers. Using force makes it harder to parry, and more importantly of course makes it faster. And this not only applies to coupés.

@Thedoctorkirby
@Thedoctorkirby 7 жыл бұрын
The Mean Green Pepper I would still recommend first of all wearing your plastron and then looking into both a heavier jacket and plastron. I've only rarely ever found that fencing has left me with bruises and barring that you simply bruise easily I do think that there is something to be done about you're experiencing pain/bruising. It may be a combat sport but it needn't be violent.

The Mean Green Pepper Ah, well, hopefully you enjoy fencing just as much or more. I still think that you don't need to be in pain or have bruises all over yourself though remedying that issue is completely your prerogative.

I know that a bullwhip breaks the sound barrier. What I said was that a foil blade is nowhere near that flexible, and that it could never reach such speeds. I doubt it would even reach 200 kmh.
@PiotrSmolanski
@PiotrSmolanski 12 жыл бұрын
That depends on the system. If you make a HEMA/WMA fighter fight within the constraints of sports rules he will get his ass handed to him simply because most of his instincts are wrong and will end up causing him penalties or not getting points. If those constraints are removed, the sports fencers tend to lose. A sports fencer is not used to having his blade torn from his grasp and being hilt-smashed in the face or grappled. Abstracts systems do not compare well against real combat.
