Intake testing with real-time comparison on the Q50!! The results were UNEXPECTED! Finally got the chance to do some Intake testing. Thank you to Soho Motorsports for enabling this to happen! We got some excellent data to share with some direct, real time comparisons of 3" intakes vs factory air boxes and drop in filters.
And a big thank you to my buddy Savage Panda Projects for hanging out today and catching some nice clips of the car on the dyno. Check out his video of the day here: • Video

Had a belt issue the second day I bought the car and got that fixed. Realized I was low on coolant and in the process of figuring that out but besides that coolant issue, the car is running strong and all my temps are good. The power band is so extremely different than the VQ and am actually getting better 0-60s stock on my VR than I was with the VQ a couple weeks ago. In my opinion there’s not a better feeling than driving a turbo car lol overall very happy I got the car and can’t wait for my JB4 to come in.

This is good info. I read and researched about aftermarket intakes and I came to the realization that the stock box and silicone hoses with drop in performance dry air filters are the way to go. That’s what I have in my qx50 3.7l. I’am not changing a thing. I seen dyno after dyno that aftermaket intakes lose power.

I have a q50 but spend most my time working on 30+ year old cars. The factory air boxes on old car are often cracked, old, and unavailable. Aftermarket is the only way to go in those cases. Anyway most aftermarket intakes are just hot air intakes and you got to fab up boxes, and piping to get them to work right.

Great info and data. One thing to consider here is that if your motor is not needing more air, Giving it more will not do anything. Also..was this test on Stock manifold and TB? Larger Intakes will reduce Air velocity with out anything else done to the intake system. So this all makes sense. And it's been seen over and over again on the dynos. This the reason I have not even considered intakes, drop in filter with Z1 tubes and call it day.

There's no shame in admiting you like the looks of an intake over stock air box. Lol. aFe are not bad of a product though. Really depends on what you’re going for. If you’re looking for power you could do exhaust and a tune and be making great power with that platform and would be around $2500 total, but that would leave you with a lot of power and tires that couldn’t handle it. Or if you’re satisfied with the power and just want to to handle a bit better, look at tires and suspension +sway bars. i really like the video and the idea behind it, i just don’t get how admin him self makes more power when the cars he tuned switched from 2.5” to his 3”, but you switched to 3” intakes at soho and the intakes made you lose power, but he makes more power with them… also one thing to consider is most people use e85 with these intakes. since you’re bringing in more air you can make use of more octane, and therefore more advanced timing without detonation. so yes if we’re just adding more air to the mix with 3” intakes but aren’t adding more fuel to the mix then you still could only make the same power or less like we seen. just my thoughts, but overall a great video with good information, and i really like the R&D you do for the community.
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think “most” people are on e85 with the intakes, but as I’ve always said, the g37 responds better to intakes, which is what admin tuned mostly. You also have to understand that admin is trying to sell you HIS 3” intakes. And my car didn’t lose power-it just dropped power compared to drop in filters. My car was already tuned, don’t forget. So if I would have installed these 3” intakes and tuned it for the first time, these would have been gains. But compared to factory air boxes, they are no good.

I wonder how Actual Cold Air Intakes would perform vs the stock air boxes.(Custom made like how freshhkiicks did on his q50) The test you did doesn't really surprise me because even switching to 3" intakes you still have them in the enginebay sucking up all that hot air so of course your going to loose a lil power vs the stock air boxes that's actually designed for cold air direction getting help from the radiator cover.
@SpeedCultureStudios

I discussed all of this in the video. The hood is open and fans blowing into the intakes so it really isn’t pulling that much heat into the engine in this case so the expectation was to pick up some power although yes in regular driving with the hood down, hot air intakes are no good. 3” long tubes intakes help keep the air cool but have been shown over and over to provide little if any hp gains in the Q50. The G responds a bit better but the Q sees nothing in power gains from intakes. Nik at Soho confirmed that this day which I mentioned in the video.

Why should you not drive with 3 inch intakes without a tune?

Because the car may not run right-many people have gotten check engine lights with intakes and no tune on this platform.

It’s crazy because g37s pick up so much from 3in intake
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 3 жыл бұрын
But do they? They pick up power because they go from a baseline number and then a tuned number with intakes. We don’t know how much power can actually be attributed to the intakes. Only one real side by side comparison has been done and the gains were minimal. I forget the channel name now but it’s out there!

@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 3 жыл бұрын
@@phantoment.3280 the Weapon R intakes would not be better-they may actually be worse because the MAF tube is actually smaller so the only difference from the stock intakes is that they’d be sucking hot air with no benefit from increased volume.

Well look at that, and I thought it was gonna be abit better but worse just like those short ram, that’s sucks, they make it seem like there hot stuff lol but guess you gotta stick with the basics and a couple of different components.

They definitely pull in heat, but don’t miss the fact that even the first pull with 3” intakes lost power compared to factory air boxes-before heat was an issue.

I agree and disagree. Do the same video with a G37 admintuning intakes has a proven track record for gains, but they are expensive, and require a tune. I know that he don't got any intake for Q50 your right about short rams nothing new.
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 3 жыл бұрын
I agree and disagree lol. I’ve discussed this before-the G responds to intakes better than the Q. The Q just doesn’t need the additional air. Long tube intakes on the Q would yield minimal gains over stock even if there were any available. Soho agreed with this while we were discussing intakes. Admin 3” intakes have never actually shown real gains because no one has ever tuned the car with stock air boxes or takedas, for example, then swapped in admins and retuned. I have only seen 1 side by side comparison between takedas and admins on a G and they gained 2 hp. They were disappointed by the cost, effort to install, for minimal gains. I can’t recall the channel now but it can be found.
