How a Hybrid eCVT Transmission Works Part 2

Here’s an in-depth look inside a Toyota Hybrid electronic continuously variable transmission and how it works!
A hybrid transmission is continuously variable since it does not have fixed gear ratios like a typical automatic or manual transmission. It can infinitely vary the ratio by varying its input speeds going through the power split device. It consists of two electric motors (MG1 and MG2) and input coming from an internal combustion engine. These three power sources use a planetary gear set (power split device) to connect the three of them together. Additional components include temperature and speed sensors, as well as a chain drive countershaft, parking pawl mechanism, cooling circuit, an oil pump and the final drive, all housed within the transmission casing.
The transmission’s motor-generator #1 (MG1) is primarily used as an alternator (power generation from the internal combustion engine (ICE) as well as a starter for the ICE and is the smaller of the two motors. Motor- generator #1 (MG2) is directly related to the wheel speed, and is used to propel the vehicle in electric only mode, as well as add torque to assist the internal combustion engine during acceleration. It also provides regenerative braking to recharge the hybrid battery. Together, the three power components can vary their speeds (The ICE is controlled by the ECU, and MG1 and MG2 is controlled by the hybrid inverter) to achieve an efficient output to turn the wheels.
Part 1 of this video series covered the electronic components of the Toyota Prius hybrid system, including the hybrid battery, power inverter, cooling circuit and DC to DC converter. It can be found here:

What are the limitations to these eCVT transmissions? I would think top speed is limited with only a single planetary gear set. Also, it seems that having one reduces the towing limit. Is towing limited because of heat generation or something else like the battery running out of juice and then you're running on the ICE. I recently took a look at the RAV4 hybrid. It has a decent size 4 cylinder, 2.5 L, that should be able to tow 3,000 lb but they limit it when you have the eCVT. Why? Love your videos... Educational, entertaining, and no bullshit!

Ive said it a million times, toyotas 1 mistake was using the 3 letters, CVT. It made everyone think there was a nissan style belt pully cvt and scared a ton of people from adopting hybrids. Journalists, consumer reports and even prominent automotive youtubers got it wrong for years. If toyota had just called it a hybrid transmission it wouldnt have put the image of exploding jatco cvts in peoples heads and their hybrid lineup would have taken off much faster.

Very to see all these components, thanks! I do appreciate the Prius, we own one, a 3rd gen plugin. I guess they have a lot more grunt, as it keeps a steady 80MPH on the German autobahn, even up hill, loaded with the entire family and holiday luggage. Also on a flat stretch it’s absolutely amazing how quickly it reaches 110 MPH. Still 50MPG (US) for the entire journey. It’s by no means slow, but the ICE revs up quite a bit during acceleration and on steep hills. If you’re the kind of driver that doesn’t want to hear the ICE, afraid to bust the engine, well yeah then it’s slow… But at 80MPH on a flat stretch you hardly hear the ICE. Clever technology and very robust, due to the lack of a physical shifter mechanism and all gears permanently engaged. The plug-in is what it should have been from the beginning IMHO, as it does 55MPH electric only, and has enough storage capacity to drive really long descents on regenerative braking only. I checked the brake temp after driving down a pass in the alps: discs were cold! Impressive.

Enjoyed your vid. I just replace a trans in '07 Lexus RX400h due to trouble codes from insulation leaks in inverter and trans assembly. 46 years turning wrenches this my first hybrid. After replacing with one from '08 from an '08, along with inverter/converter. I decided to look inside and was surprised to find how simple and minimal parts it took compared to a regular automatic trans. Also, this is 3rd generation where they eliminated the chain to final drive and where I found what failed. The gear from final drive to differential was missing teeth, both gears. I imagine the pieces of the missing teeth I later found stuck to magnetic parts caused the insulation leak code. The code would not allow the ready light, but if I cleared the code it drove fine until the the warning lights and it was turned off. The stators are different, too. was hoping you show freeing the magnets. These seem better secured. This has been a great learning experience.

@@eddynetweb I agree that it can even be more reliable than a manual transmission. The 3rd gen also has no chain as far as I know. Starting with the 3rd gen there is an additional planetary gear set (motor speed reduction) connected to MG2 which allows a slightly higher EV speed of about 50 mph before the ICE has to kick in to prevent am overspeed of MG1. The 4th gen biggest advantages are the even higher EV speed (I have seen 65mph EV speeds on my Corolla) and the more compact construction due to the parallel axis design of MG1 and MG2 instead of the inline construction that was used before.

That's the proper way to start an engine for the emission reducing feature of traffic light/ long pause stop start. I wonder how many starter motors the BMW and Ford and any other vehicles out there constantly restarting at traffic lights are having replaced compared to the ones before them. Then to make it worse is most people like to constantly creep at lights. Fun!

As long as you change the transmission fluid very regularly they can be reliable but the hybrid transmissions are extremely reliable.

Q#1: When I am coasting down a hill and I take foot off of all foot pedal with shifter in D, am I regenerating with mg1 or mg2 or both? Q#2: in the situation above, if I also apply the foot brake pedal lightly, will I be activating another generator or applying brake pads to rotors? Q#3 if applying brake pedal lightly does in fact initiate additional regeration, does the pressure of my brake pedal correspond to the aggressiveness of regeneration?

MG2 does the brunt of charging. When you press the pedal the friction brakes don't work at all. See my hybrid brake video for how that works.

I have a Lexus hybrid with a V6 with ~170k miles When I start driving in the morning when everything is cold, on electric power I hear a rapid clicking from the gearbox, which I assume is the chain clanking against the sprockets. After everything warms up, the noise goes away. This gearbox never had its fluid changed. Should I do it? will it help?

Change the fluid but I don't think that's the noise

Just hit 200,000 on a 2012 Ford Fusion hybrid and never knew the transmission fluid needed to be changed, you think I should change and not take that risk? Only regular oil changes, sparks, and a couple of o2 sensors, knock on wood.

Can it be used as a real generator for powering houses? It's already have a IC engine and a generator coulpled by design (and not like putting together car engine and 220v alternator by modifying the bellhousing to accept generator shaft?)

Wait so is this the same of all Toyotas with hybrid synergy drive including PHEV versions of some of their vehicles? I am honestly in awe of how well engineered Toyota's eCVT system is especially considering that it was first introduced back in 1997. It was way ahead of its time.

It excludes Toyota’s new Hybrid MAX drivetrain which uses a torque converter automatic transmission instead of an eCVT. This drivetrain is used in the Toyota Crown, the Sequoia, and the Tundra. These power trains are less efficient but can handle more power from the engine and electric motors

If I am coasting down a large mountain hill, and simply taking my Foot off the gas pedal will not reduce my speed enough to safly fly down the hillm, what is the best way to reegenerate electricity into the batteries? Foot off the gas pedal + put shifter lever in B position. Or Foot off gas pedal and slight foot pressure on the brake pedal.
@JoeyLindsay
@JoeyLindsay Жыл бұрын
B mode uses engine braking, not regen. If you lightly press on the brake pedal it will use regen a bit faster and if you push the brake pedal further, it will eventually switch to friction brakes.
