Today at Alf's Mustang Garage, we are installing the new speedometer cable needed to convert this C4 automatic transmission to a 4-speed toploader. Watch out for these aftermarket reproduction cables, the ends are too long and you may have to cut them slightly in order to make them fit.

I bought my 68 Mustang back in 99 and daily drove it while in the Navy and after I got out. The head gaskets went out on me in 2010 and its been down since. Over the years I got stuff for upgrading it and finally will get to really work on it. Finding your videos very helpful👍

Thanks for the conversion videos, I’ve been wanting to convert my ‘65 C4 to a top loader, I’m sure the process is the same, I do have a few questions, can you use the existing drive shaft? Also can you provide approximate costs to do the conversion? What too loader would you recommend for my ‘65 conversion? I thought about purchasing a donor 4 speed car but it looks like all the necessary parts needed can be bought new except for the top loader.

So in the case of this car that we converted, We had a top loader built that had all the correct items that would have been as if this car originally came with a top loader. So we were able to use the same driveshaft because we got the right top loader. As far as which one is right, I would suggest spending some time on David Kee's website davidkeetoploaders.com/ who is a big name in top loader builds. He has detailed lists of which top loaders came in different cars and what not. As far as costs go, you would be in the neighborhood of $6K depending on where you get your transmission from.

@@AlfsMustangGarage Thanks, I was just watching a video from him last night, I’ve also checked out the website for Ford parts and casting numbers and they list the ones from that year Mustang. I think I’ll reach out to Dave when I’m ready to get the top loader

Hi Alf, the speedometer on my 65 quit working. The odometer works fine. I think the last time I took the cluster out to fix a bulb, I might have bounced the cluster a little hard trying to get it out. Am I most likely going to have to replace the gauge now? Seems like every time I fix one thing, I break another.😩

Humm well I haven't come across one where the odometer works but the speedometer doesn't. Have you removed the cluster to inspect yet?

@@AlfsMustangGarage no, but I’m guessing there’s some type of gear in there for the speedo that fizzled. Looks like a replacement is fairly inexpensive, but then my odometer goes back to zero.

Ya that's too bad. I guess if you change it, you could always reset your odometer if you want it to stay the same.

I have swapped a 3 speed standard for a Borg Warner T10 in a 67 coupe with a 289 hp. The problem I have just discovered is that the speedometer cable is running backwards. I have seen post saying that I need to pull the transmission, change the speedometer drive gear with a left handed gear and also to install the matching cable gear that goes into the transmission. Can you give me any info as to how to do this? Perhaps you could steer me in the right direction to get the right parts and instructions... Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

You say that the cable for the 4 speed is longer than for the C4. If you install a cable for the 4 speed, will it work for the C4? I swear, it seems like the cable for my speedo is about an inch to short and it makes connecting the cable a royal freaking pain.

Well the only difference in the cable between the two is the length. Problem with using a 4 speed cable in a c4 is it will be way too long. You would have to be creative and find a way to route it to take up the excess without kinking it. If you're having issues connecting your cable. I have disconnected the cable from the trans side in order to easily connect the speedometer side. And then reconnected the transmission side. It seems easier to fight the transmission side rather than the cluster side.

@@AlfsMustangGarage when I get the funds to replace my worn out gauges, I'll definitely be going that route. I still have scars on my hands from wedging my fat meat hooks into that tiny space. 😆 😆

How do you determine which color of gear to use,,is white the stock gear??

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p658nMKImpioqaM.html I would watch that video and see if that helps. You have to know your rear end ratio, drive gear teeth count, and tire size. Then do some math.

What is usually the color drive gear on a speedometer cable for a 67-68 untouched 8"stock V8 rear end with 14" tires on a mustang/couger,,, I don't want to open the rear end just to count the teeth on a stock rear end,,

I wouldn't know what the stock color would be in your application. They came with multiple different rear end ratios and different transmissions. You don't need to open the differential up to determine the ratio. There are many videos on how to do that on KZfaq. The one I sent ya shows you how.

It's a 68 coup ,hard top 302 engine, four speed top loader tranny, with 5 lug hubs on a 1968 8" rear end original to the body,,
