What I love most about this movie is how simple it is. Only one villain, and a pretty basic plot, but that leaves room for a lot of character development and quieter moments that would usually be cut out for time. It’s something we don’t really get often anymore and makes this film feel special.
@firstlast9846

I wouldn’t call the plot “Basic” the majority of the film deals with how complex Peter’s life is - while Doc Oc goes on a downward spiral of insanity.

@@firstlast9846 I don’t mean basic in a bad way I just means it’s a relatively simple plot compared to a lot of other superhero movies. And that’s a good thing. That allows for the complexity within characters.

When Peter gives up being Spider-man, his life significantly improves. He's genuinely happy and Burt Bucharach's song shows this perfectly. When he ignores that one person being mugged, you can see it in his face. Turning away almost breaks him. Later on when he hears that a girl is stuck in the burning building, he doesn't hesitate. He will not ignore another person. Peter is a hero through and through. The powers are just a bonus.
@theankh2872
@theankh2872 2 жыл бұрын
The fire scene is a perfect showing that Peter Parker isn't Spider-Man, Spider-Man is Peter Parker. Even when he didn't have any powers, he felt the need to enter the building and help the people. Same with the guy getting mugged that he didn't help, but felt guilty for it. All of this because deep down he really took uncle Ben's lesson to heart, even if sometimes, like in the movie, he is hesitant to follow it because how crappy his life can get.

That was a great scene, where Aunt May talks about heroes and how everyone loves them. I think they juxtaposed it to the Green Goblin's speech about how everyone loves to see a hero fall. We're seeing the same subject from two different angles, one from a good person and one from a villain.

I really appreciate how this movie truly is about the underdog. The other versions of Spider-Man never get that part right, and that is why I personally feel more attached to Toby’s character than theirs. No matter how hard they try to not be the cool kids, they ARE the cool kids. Toby isn’t, and they demonstrated that perfectly. He isn’t cool, or popular, or rich. He is self made and has only a whole lotta heart to give, and that’s why seeing him get put down only to stand back up again is so impactful for me. This is my favorite movie of all time, hands down.

That's why I have always said that if even if you take out all the superhero parts from the Raimi's trilogy, it feels like indie-drama movies where Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker is just some guy who has so many professional and personal problems in his life, have so many responsibilities, has to face the consequences, doesn't get anything handed on a silver platter and have to work his ass off for every single thing, just to get through day by day in the world.
@adamwoolston253
@adamwoolston253 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve always been impressed by the scene where Peter confessed to Aunt May that he bears some of the responsibility for Uncle Ben’s death. In a lesser movie, or rather, in the hands of a lesser filmmaker, that scene would have ended with May hugging Peter and telling him it was ok and she was so glad he got that off his chest and she loves him so much and tender music swelling. But she pulls her hand away when he goes to grab it, looks at him like she doesn’t even know who he is anymore, and walks away without a word. This is brilliant for a couple reasons: One, Peter doesn’t get off easy. This is needed for his arc and for this moment where he tells Aunt May the truth to carry actual weight and have actual consequences for him. Two, that was the love of Aunt May’s life and to learn that Peter was responsible for it would be devastating to her, and she would need the time to process that. Raimi handling this the way he did showed an incredible understanding of BOTH characters. That’s really what this movie nailed: the characters. It’s a very simple, non-bloated story, and the focus is on the characters and emotional beats like this one, and they hit that much harder for it. The movie has time to let this scene play out because it MADE the time to do it. That’s special and you don’t see it done like that today

What sticks with me most about this movie and Raimi trilogy as a whole, is how unabashedly melodramatic they are. When today's modern marvel films are afraid to do so. It swings for emotion, never undercutting said emotion with comedy. When I watch the new spiderman trailer and see Peter and his friends laughing at Otto Octavius name I utterly cringe. Sam Raimi knew his characters and his movie, and trusted us as audience to feel the emotion. Some may call it cheesy, and to some degree I'd agree. But much like classic star wars melodramatic cheese is fantastic.

2 parts that have always struck me are: When that building's on fire Peter rips his shirt open, omaging the first the film at the festival; almost out of sheer instinct. But then he realizes he doesn't have the suit, nor his powers. Though that doesn't stop him from running in. Obligation or not. But after he saves the little girl, he overhears the fire fighters give devastating news.... several other people died on a previous floor. Were Spider-Man there, they could've been saved. No matter what Peter does he just can't catch a break.... And Aunt May's message about sometimes having to give up what we love most, even our dreams, is very wise as it is hurtful. By the end Peter relays Aunt May to Otto as he himself was never a monster, just a victim of his dreams. By being purely sympathetic he was able to get through to him and stopped the reactor. Not just 2, but the entire Trilogy is so well layered, that so many meaningful messages and themes can be taken from it, apart from their wonderful spectacle.

A movie or tv show with Superior SpiderMan would be the best since it's the most interesting new take I've seen, and he can be like a "Punisher Spiderman that kills". Since Spidy can lift 10 tons with his small body, his muscle and bone density would be very compact and give him a natural defense body when attacked. He would have easily overpowered Cap America and many others with is superhuman speed, agility, and strength in the Civil War movie.

What I liked about this trilogy was how nearly all the side characters were either memorable or served some purpose even if they were just extras. Whether it’s the Daily Bugle staff each having a different interaction and relationship with Peter or the everyday citizens of New York having their own personality that stood out. A good example is Ursala in this movie offering Peter some cake. It shows not only how kind she is but also served to give him a much needed break. Though they could’ve easily cut scenes like this out, the movie would’ve lost something. This is how the small moments and extra details can add a lot.

I love how Otto Octavius’ line near the start of the movie; “If you keep something as complex as love bottled inside, it’ll eat away at you”, rings true throughout the whole movie. For me, all the shit things happening to peter was the foundation for him giving up being Spiderman in this film, the cherry on top was his bottled-in love for Mary-Jane, which was eating away at him and giving him that performance anxiety, leading to Spiderman no more. And when he does return to being Spiderman because it’s his core, his first immediate battle is to save Mary-Jane by fighting Doc Ock on the train. For me, that’s how I see his arc in this film. I absolutely love it for all those reasons and more.

Yes, he did this project for the good of humanity, but he succumbed to the potential of this power he had created, which caused the accident destroying the inhibitor chip and killed his wife. His story was not about being the villain who wanted to destroy, he wanted to create and had his Icarus moment. It's his redemption at the end of the movie by over-powering the arms that have been manipulating his actions throughout the movie and sacrificing himself and his life work to save New York. It reminded us that the kind man we met at the beginning of the film was still inside wanting to do good, despite all the harm he caused.

I see Peters decision to not be Spider-Man anymore as sort of a “Be careful what you wish for” type of scenario, because before that happens all of this stuff in his life is really screwing him over, MJ not wanting anything to do with him, Harry being pissed at him for presumably protecting the guy who he thinks killed his father, him losing his job because being Spider-Man always makes him late, but he soon finds out that even when he gave up being Spider-Man it didn’t instantly fix all those things that were going wrong in his life, and I think it really shows that when he’s in his room after the burning building scene and he says “Am I not supposed to have what I want? What I need? What am I supposed to do?” He’s like “Why didn’t giving up being Spider-Man fix all of my issues?” And at the same time he still had the desire to save the kid from the burning building and he felt guilty when the one firefighter said that someone on the 4th floor never made it out, and I think it ultimately showed Peter that when it comes to life you can never have only happiness, there’s always gonna be moments of both happiness and sadness in your life, just like how when he was Spider-Man he still had the people he saved give him happiness to work in tangent with the misery that comes with his life as Spider-Man, and I think that’s what ultimately pushed him to become Spider-Man again
@tjjordan4207

Technically, he did improve some things about his life, like getting to class on time and studying more to get better grades. But it actually did very little to improve his life overall in the areas that truly mattered. If anything, having that break put things into perspective for him, even the person who died in the fire on the 4th floor in the fire was a subconscious reminder of his guilt about Uncle Ben's death. Being Spider-Man is what ultimately gives him fulfillment.

To Jeremy’s point, the best scene of the film (and perhaps the entire trilogy) is the scene when aunt may delivers that speech to Peter about holding on a little longer when things aren’t going right for you. It hits on a human and superhero level and that’s why it’s so emotionally powerful. That speech feeds into Peter being Spider-Man because that’s who he is, not just out of obligation, like Jeremy was talking about. That scene makes me shed a tear almost every time I watch it.

Like, big arms, tiny body. Whereas Alfred Molina is like, "yeah..I have big arms..which are sized perfectly for my tall and strong looking body..." Comics Dock Ock has always been a kind of joke to me..Then Alfred shows up as Doc Ock and I'm like, "Oh shit! Peter's in trouble!"

Just watched Spider-Man 2.1 for the first time ever, and in some ways, it was even better than the theatrical version of the movie, which is already awesome! For the first time ever with this movie, after years of having watched it as a kid, I actually got choked up a couple times. Particularly when Peter goes back to help May move out of her house, I was tearing up. The last time they spoke, Peter admitted that Ben's death was all his fault because he lied about where he'd be and wasn't at the rendezvous on time. His last moments before Ben's death, he was a jerk, then he holds onto the guilt while letting his Aunt beat herself up for two years thinking she was to blame for allowing Ben to take Peter to the library, only then later for May to completely forgive Peter and congratulate him on his bravery in admitting the truth, gah, it really hit me this time. We take our parents/guardians for granted, and yet they still have such unconditional love for us even when we treat them like crap. Rosemary Harris killed it.

Spiderman 2.1 is surely awesome with the extended action shots and a couple of nice scenes, but there were 2 things which bothered me: Firstly, the Spidey lift scene was far superior in the original version, but in 2.1 it was lame to say the least. Secondly, in the original climax Doc Ock says "I will not die a monster", but that line is missing in 2.1 - there was no reason to remove it.

The most iconic scene I remember even today is back at the train sequence. Spider-Man just stopped the train from falling before he loses consciousness. Even though he doesn't have his mask on the people bring him in the train for safety and bring him his mask telling him that they support him and will keep his secret. To me this is an important scene because throughout the movie Peter has been feeling isolated, but in this scene he feels the support from the people he saves. They support him even to the point that they put themselves in between him and Dr. Ock, when he gets in the train for him. What a moment.

Peter had to give up the normal life he wanted in order to live up to the responsibility his powers imbue him with. Meanwhile, Otto faces the same moral quandary and realizes that he has to ‘give up’ his fusion reactor in order to avoid becoming a monster. This line is the true climax and emotional payoff of the film. Peter’s arc comes to its end with him vocalizing the choice he has made and Otto realizes what he must do. “Sometimes to do what’s right, we have to be steady, and give up the things we want the most. Even our dreams.” A tough and difficult lesson, but a beautiful one as well. This movie understood Peter Parker!

They fit so much into this movie without it ever feeling crammed or rushed, or too long. His relationship with MJ and Harry. So much development and depth. The ultimate triangle.

The part that sticks out the most for me is when Dock Ock takes MJ and shoves peter into the rubble. Leaving Peter to burst out in anger and then his powers come back and the transition between him dropping the glasses and then Jumping out of the newspaper was godly! The soundtrack alone makes my hair stand and its just pure awesomeness!🙌🏻🔥🔥

I re-watched this again recently for No Way Home, and Aunt May’s speech to Peter about the neighbor kid needing a hero made me tear up. That along with watching Spiderman 2002 made me tear up and reflect. I used to watch Packer games (Football) for years every Sunday with my grandparents and some scenes from these movies made me cry and realize how precious life can be. I went out of my way to go watch a Packer game with my grandparents soon after this and loved it!

This is more of a thing he does in 3, but I love how Franco does the weird lazy eyelid thing Dafoe did in 1 when he was in goblin mode. The casting for these movies are perfect, I don’t care. Been a spidey fan since I was 2. They were perfect. And Tobey quips man, nobody gives him credit for it. “Here’s your change!”

I saw this twice in theaters and one of those times was in IMAX, which at the time was considerably bigger than today's IMAX screens. When I got the dvd, I would rewatch it almost every week for a while. This movie has always amazed me and for a long time, I didn't really know why. As I came to understand it better watching reviews like this one, I've been able to appreciate the film even more knowing why it amazed me so much as a kid. At the time, it was my favorite comic book film and I know many others felt the same way, some still do. My personal favorite comic book film now is The Dark Knight.

One can argue the mechanical arms were connected to Doc Ock's brain and were capable of defending him and fighting spider-man even if he was semi conscious. Spider-man knocking him out wouldn't disable the arms. There's a deleted scene where the arms protect Otto while Spider-man is wailing on him.

@@zackreynolds21 Peter wouldn't do that he admires and respects Otto as a scientist and friend. You... Watched the movie right? Or read comics? Peter always pulls his punches with mere mortals he can break with one blow.

@@zackreynolds21 it really would. But exactly just like superman, peter holds back significantly to protect those he’s fighting against because hes cares enough to not kill them, nor vegetableize them.

You're right, there was a lot to unpack after watching this for the first time in theaters. I remember sitting there watching the credits roll listening to the song that plays at first "Dashboard Confessional - Vindicated" and getting emotional.

When you mentioned him saving the kid in the fire when he had no powers, he felt good about it. Then he is immediately informed that there was one more in the fire that he didn’t save, that he could have saved. It’s just so good.

Spider Man 2 is the perfect example of a sequel done right. It developed on all the things Spider Man 1 started briefly and they really made me feel sorry for Peter Parker as a character, he was pummeled mentally and physically so much. Amazing movie.

My favorites in this movie...Peter's bravery to admit what happened with Ben and her forgiveness. The people on the subway realizing "He's just a kid, no older than my son". Not some horrible criminal. An unassuming guy, no over the top looks. Dr. Octavius, committed to his experiment, yet influenced by the mechanical arms. This movie is indeed Awesometacular!!!
