I agree that there isn't a scene that rivals the train scene, but the moment when he's buried under the rubble and screaming for help was really touching. And I liked the down time, the moments of Peter just being Peter.

I loved the balance that Holland brought to the character. You believe him as the awkward teenager, but you also believe him as the witty hero.

In my opinion, and this is my opinion, the fact that the stakes are low made this movie great. He's a high schooler. He's 15. Imagine that he had the death of a bunch of people on his hands. The character will get older, save that intensity for later. This movie really nails down the fact he is a kid. The stakes seem high to him when really he is only going after a scavenger with high tech. That's just my opinion though

I think the biggest reason why there are not many consequences is so people can get used to it being very fun and whimsical to a point that when it does get darker and more violent as Spider-Man grows older, people can tell the difference. Y'know how Harry Potter was all light-hearted in the beginning and the finales were always intense but by the fourth movie the entire movie kept that intense tone? I feel like Marvel's doing something like that.

As a person who has never read the comics, i thought Zendaya's character (she played MJ) was totally useless and added no value... if they they took her out of the movie, it would hv made no difference.

Spider-man 2 was ahead of its time, especially the visual effects. That train scene!

I thought this film was great.A good villian,a good script,good music,good fights,good characters,good humour ,good world building,good acting.Its a great summer blockbuster that's isn't just dumb fun but a solid movie with great moments and acting.This is easily on par with the first 2 raimi films for me

Also, the scene when he goes and picks up his homecoming date and meets her dad. Including the following car ride to Homecoming, was one of the greatest scenes in any marvel movie. Keaton is near perfect and more than dark enough. That scene absolutely made the movie and it didn't even have costumes or fighting. Really, top 5 scenes in any superhero movie.

I feel like there was to much of a reliance on stark technology.

As a 16 year old, all of the teenagers in this movie felt very real to me. I know people like Flash, Liz and Ned. It was a joy to watch Peter, someone who I'd like to hang out with myself, learn what most people are drilling into our heads these days: responsibility.

Its hard because you want to see the Marvel film universe develop and be interconnected. The problem with that is the creative constraints that come along with knowing that another movie has to be made. What separates the OK films from the great films often seems to be how the films stands alone as a single cohesive film where allusions are made to a broader universe but they don't hold the film back from telling a good story. Honestly I was disappointed with this film Probably because people were saying stuff like “oh my god this is at least twice as good as Rami’s” I mean I thought it was ok and enjoyable at times but it just felt like it was nothing special and I didn’t like the fact that characters like iron man were in most scenes. Also there was no great Spider-Man feats in the film except when he lifted the rubble of himself (great comic reference) I also didn’t like flash or MJ in the film I did appreciate the little things it did though like when he made his web fluid and when there was no buildings for him to swing on Overall I agree with your grade Looking back on this comment-I think I was too harsh I thought it was a fun film;it did nothing wrong but the film had no stakes or consequences. You never felt as if he was going to die because his suit was weirdly overpowered (why would Tony give a 14 year old (he thought he was 14) a suit that is on the same level as his if he didn’t want him to use the suit?) and iron man could just always save him,like he did. Also basically all his quips were pretty bad (Disney probably had something to do with that). The action was...ok...it was nothing special and it wasn’t exactly the highlight of the film. Although they did blend the two Peter Parker’s aspects in Rami’s trilogy and TASM well and seeing spider-man fight without his high tech suit was satisfying Overall:I’d say they did nothing wrong,but it wasn’t a great film because it felt more like a trailer or advertisement for the character,than a film

Chris, did you grow up with Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically.

It was a funny, well made superhero movie nice placed in the MCU, but as a Spider-man version it felt short in many things... I didn't like that there was no arachnid sense, and the suit was like half of the super hero...the suit came with spider web presets? ....c'mon, the use of the spider web should be Peter's wit! not the suit. It feels like any athletic person with a suit like that can be a Spiderman, after all, probably the suit can be enhanced to make the user stronger and with the ability to stick to walls.

I don't mind down times in superhero movies, those are actually a necessity to add development. The reason Homecoming was meh to me is because it's a high school movie and I just don't relate to that setting anymore.

Thats why I like Stuckmann. Guy is not afraid to voice his own opinion. Just because the majority of the critics worship MCU, does not mean you have to as well.

I think the brutal scene you were looking for was the final fight with the Vulture. It's not about violence, its about challenge, the Vulture set the stakes: "You cant beat me, be smart. Dont make me kill you" and Peter challenging him without the Stark gear and knowing he could lose, elevates the scene. Also, he got beat up really bad.

yeah, yeah, yeah. But did they really have to re-boot it again? The CGI is getting better, but still looks kind of "rubbery" a lot of the time. And too much slapstick for my taste. I still think the first Toby-Spidey was the best.

What I truly loved MOST about this film, finally a super villain who can distinguish their enemy based on their voice when they come in contact with them without their mask. This movie (Along with all MCU movies) are so real yet fictional, and they balance those two aspects really well. Edit: Also I love how they did the OG Spider-Man theme but didn't make it as "cheesy"

Spider-Man never punches any of the villains he fights. He uses his webs, he counters his enemies punches which causes them to punch each other, he even kicks them, but he never punches them.

This was by far the best Spiderman movie since Spiderman 2 (Raimi versions).

I thought it was pretty meh. While I loved every scene with Peter Parker in it, the action scenes with Spider-Man were extremely underwhelming.

Spider-Man Homecoming is a light hearted enjoyable slow paced high school drama with Spider-Man in it. Lacks intensity, emotion, neatness and the individuality of the character Spider-Man/Peter Parker. Peter Parker designed his own classic suit, which does not have robotic moving eyes. It was creative and simple. If you give Spider-Man a high-tech suit why not give it to Captain America/Black Widow/BlackPanther/ Falcon/ Hawkeye. Make them all "Iron" and high-tech. A suit is what sets a characterapart from the group and gives individuality to it. A suit made by Peter with minor tweaks by Tony Stark would have been a much better idea than the whole suit made by Tony where Peter has not idea about it. Also, Peter's life does not suck in Homecoming the only consequences of all the dumb things he does is not sorrow and self realisation but his suit taken by Tony. Peter is not at all mature about anything, he just does stuff and forgets and moves on. That's not who Peter Parker is, Peter Parker is Humble and Sensitive and definitely Reflects upon his actions. Plus the biggest defect of the movie is NO SWINGING to skyscrapers in new york. WTH I mean how much more Conservative can you get. Jokes are not funny and writing though original is still not riveting enough. My verdict: 6.5/10 For Comparisons: S-M 2: 9.5/10 TAS-M 2: 3/10

just watched this for the first time and honestly it's one of my favorites of the mcu so far . it wasn't always as intense and serious as he said but it provided that in different ways like the surprise when you find out who Liz's dad is and so forth. It kept me way more entertained than most of the marvel movies so far and that's the point right ?

This is honestly, in my opinion the worst version of Spider-Man. Damn he was 24/7 fed by Tony Stark. Even in Far From Home he created a new suit using archives of Tony. I get that Tony is supposed to be uncle Ben for this Peter but still :/ We might aswell call him Iron Junior. Dont even get me started on the other casts. What the fuck were they thinking when casting characters like Flash.

Finally someone who can actually criticise MCU movies without worrying about getting called a hater. Good review Chris, and cant say im not surprised that the movie is light hearted and plays it safe.

The reason the stakes are low is because they are supposed to be, Spiderman is new to being Spiderman, he’s trying to prove himself by taking down the vulture. The vulture is not a huge threat that’s why the avengers are not after him but Spiderman sees no crime too small because he is the friendly neighborhood Spiderman

As great as this film is and as great as Michael Keaton is as the vulture I still think Spider-Man 2 is better

I think B for Homecoming is a bit harsh when you gave A for Ghost in the Shell. Compared to Ghost in the Shell, Homecoming is much more developed in plot wise and well directed.

I disagree with there not being that iconic scene. when he’s under all the rubble, and he says “come on spider man”. U feel that he’s a scared 15 year old but you feel the growth he’s had throughout the film.

How about the fact that in civil war he was fighting against captain america and holding his own, but in his own movie he has trouble climbing the tower and doing simple "spiderman tasks"

This movie was disappointing. It felt like I was watching a Disney movie rather than a Marvel movie. I prefer the last actor who portrayed Spider-Man. The high school setting and characters bored me. I’m glad I didn’t pay to see this movie.

Homecoming was ok. Watched it with my son. Somewhat enjoyable. Best parts are the Michael keaton scenes. But I was bored. This movie was overhyped.

I'm surprised Chris thinks the movie didn't have scenes like the ending of Spider-Man 1 and the train scene from 2. *SPOILERS* Not even when he's saving his friends from the elevator crash? Or when Adrian threatens Peter and they have a personal bloodied brawl? The ferry scene? When the rubble is stacked on top of Peter and he thinks he's hopeless? Or when he stops the plane from crashing into buildings while pedestrians watch in terror?

I thought that the scene where he lifted up the rubble off his body realizing that he himself is Spider-Man with or without the suit was pretty intense. Around the level of when peter stopped the train in Spider-Man 2.

Chris, this is my problem with most the Marvel films. They don't have stakes, there is no real risks being taken. I love the Marvel movies, but I want them to be more powerful and stop playing it safe all the time.
