Game Review & Impressions
---------------------------------------------------
Released originally for the Sega Genesis, the Sega CD version of Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin takes the same basic premise of the cartridge release, but packs in full CD audio, plus a series of animated cutscenes.
Spider-Man must stop the Kingpin from destroying New York City with a nuclear bomb, despite being framed by the criminal overlord as the mastermind behind the bomb plot. Not only must Spidey avoid the local police force, he must bring Dr. Octopus, Green Goblin and other nemeses to justice, all the while searching for clues as to the bomb's location.
The animation, voice-acted sequences and music are brilliant, but the actual game is pretty dull. Enemies are best avoided rather than fought, so the game becomes more about avoidance than anything else. The actual fighting is less than stellar either, so it makes for a less-than-thrilling experience. Still, the animation of the main Spider-Man sprite is really good, and the wall-climbing mechanics and web-swinging are well implemented.
Video Notes
---------------------------------------------------
I took the time to find all of the special edition comics hidden in various locations around the game world. Collecting the comics was part of a competition at the time of the game's release, and you could win some cool prizes, including a limited-edition jacket, as well as gaming-related paraphernalia.
