A friendly coworker of mine who plays guitar gave me a very interesting fingering warm up technique for the ukulele that he uses on the guitar but he adapted it for the uke for me. Thanks Patrick! So, I learned to play it and I'm sharing it with all the ukulele players now. It really breaks up "the hand" and the fingers learn to operate independently. I need to work at it more myself but it's great for finger dexterity. I called it "Spider Scales" since it's like a spider going up the fretboard. These are the best points from a fan:

This is excellent. And my fingers do NOT want to do it at all. But that's good, I like when exercises are hard cos clearly it's something I have to work on. Thanks for this!

+Ciara Carruthers : Great Ciara! My guitarist coworker worked it out on the ukulele for me. He realized the uke had 4 strings and was perfect for 4 fingers. I just added the funky ending and I actually learned it.

Thank you for the spider. I busted my L-hand ring- finger and this exercise is helping to get him to do what he is told. It takes a lot of work to play again after an injury. This exercise is great for flexibility. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You help a lot of people.

This is great for both finger independce as well as getting the picking hand sync done at the same time. I was taught a slightly different variety to this where you start on G string, go diagonally down to tge A string, switch to fret 4 of the G string and climb up diagonally to the A string, come back the same. Way, switch to 4th fret of the A string and climb back up to the G. Repeat the same pattern again starting from fret 2 of the G. Its a great variation and amazing for beginners to get finger independence

Wow! Great! When I went to Hawaii in 2015 on that group ukulele tour, I had no idea of what type of Hawaiian uke I might buy. It turned out by luck that I got that Kamaka tour. I'm very partial to the Kamaka pineapple! Koaloha makes one as well but Kamaka was the original and I met Fred Kamaka so I was sold! hehe

hello! you are really good! what did you use to learn all this? like do you recommend any books?
@PeteyHoudini
@PeteyHoudini 9 жыл бұрын
Nadda Mansour : Hi Nadda! Thanx. I learn by exploration. I chat with other musicians, I buy lots of ukulele method books (old and new), I watch YT vids, and I attend some ukulele jams in different cities and smooze with other uke players. There is no one good book. However, my best advice (that no uke player ever wants to follow) is to learn to read music and be able to play melody lines on the uke off a page of simple sheet music. That is the best advice of all. Sure, there are plenty of unskilled genius uke players but they are not in the majority. Also, the best uke books require reading music knowledge like the Daniel Ho edited books by Alfred Publishing. I recommend all three with DVDs. Though, best to start with the Hal Leonard Ukulele 1 method by my fav. Lil' Rev to learn to read music. BTW - the Spider scales was suggested to me by a guitarist coworker who thought it would work on the uke. I adapted it for the uke.

This is super cool buddy! I'll give a go at naming that chord diagrammed at 2:27: how about Ddimmaj7sus4 (hahaha- that's one wacky-ass chord there). Those two chords are a kind of "twisted pair" - reminiscent of what JH was calling "mirror chords". Anyway... great meeting you at JHUI. I hope you check out some of my shtuph.

Dear Petey. I am sueing you because the painting has not got done and my dog is walking around outside the window with a sign saying " Walk me now" ....................... One the other hand I am actually getting to grips with this scale. My biggest problem seems to be that my picking fingers sometimes loose the sequence and will automatically go to the next string. It does not upset the scale or the timing on me (so far) but I don't want to develop bad habbits
