Hi Sean, Now in my 70s, i look back with the love my dear gran showed me. She was my inspiration for gardening. Her life had been a very hard one widowed in her 30s, with 5 children, my grandfather killed in the first world war along with her brother. And her youngest son killed in the 2nd World War. She was brought up on a farm, she was so knowable about growing everything. And from a time almost before I can remember, i was so young, she had me gardening. So all my life i have been gardening. I ran a gardening club, and a gardening club for the school, i volunteered teaching children how to grow alsorts of things. Then as a trained cook/chef i taught them to cook the things we had grown. We also sold plants and vegetables, to help funds. The children were so interested. So the legacy goes on. My Dear gran, me , my children Grandchildren, an now great Grandchildren and all the children who learnt, at school, what i had learnt myself many years before. To feel the soil, in your hands, the wonderful worms , keeping the soil clean, well I love it to this day, even though I only have a small garden now! 😊 🎉 Sandra. Rhyl

My Father was a schoolmaster, and we lived at the Victorian school house, with its massive garden. In the fifties the oldest class left school at fifteen. These big country lads had lessons in gardening, so our garden got turned over. We had soft fruit, and a fabulous orchard, where my brother and I had a special tree each, for climbing. My Father gave us a small plot of land each. I had dahlias, wallflowers, forget me nots to name a few.

I just love your stories. Today was particularly good. I so enjoyed hearing about your gardening past and found it quite riveting. I didn’t realise that you were prominent in the tv and journalism world. You’ve moved about the British Isles during your life unlike myself who have only lived in London for a few years and my native Suffolk. I was given a ginger kitten recently and have called him Rusty after your dear old friend.

I remember in the 60s when you could actually smell apple trees and fruit and veg had their strong unique smell .anyway I am just about to prune my roses but never know how to do it so thank goodness for u tube x

Totally agree, Geoff Hamilton was the best GW presenter and his Organic Gardening book became our go to book when had our first allotment. Absolutely LOVED the Victorian Kitchen Garden series and all that followed. Was thrilled to actually visit it and meet Harry, such a lovely man. It remains one of my life's highlights. So sad they never re ran all the series on TV, better than all of today's rubbish TV. My other inspiration would be my parents. Our garden had a clear division between flowers and veg, mum maintained flowers and dad cultivated the veg and fruit. Happy memories indeed 😊

My wife and I took a pilgrimage to Barnsdale to look around the gardens soon after Geoff Hamilton’s death as he was our gardening inspiration. It was a great experience he is the gardener that still influences our garden style.

I find that funny and oh so true that watching "gardeners world "makes you want to rush out and start poking around the beds until sun down.I also find it funny how our local nursery is packed out with customers early doors on a Saturday .

My favourite tv gardeners were Percy Thrower in my younger days then Geoff Hamilton. Both down to earth gardener's gardeners.

Visited Barnsdale many years ago Sean, just after Geof died. Barnsdale is situated in the smallest county in England, Rutland. Very much worth a visit.

Do make a visit to Barnsdale if you can. It's well worth it. The small gardens which were created are still there which of course encouraged many people to make the best of their small plots. My brother-in-law worked for the BBC as a video editor and has recounted many happy memories of sitting in the outside broadcast van there editing before the programmes went out. You can even get a nice cuppa tea there!

I grew up in the 60's and 70's - mum and dad watched Gardener's World every week. We had a small garden but never the less they grew strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, red and blackcurrants, pears, apples, quince, tomatos, potatoes, cabbage, carrotts etc and flowers a plenty. Mum made jam, marmalade, chutney etc and we always had a full shelf in the pantry.

This is a great idea for a mini series. Geoff Hamilton was my favourite GW presenter too, he was a proper gardeners gardener I always say. We also visited Barnsdale a couple of years after he died and thoroughly enjoyed seeing how it was laid out to suit filming. I still have my ‘memory plant’ bought there, a lovely variegated climbing jasmine. ☕️

I came upon Gardeners World more recently (a few years now) so the only presenter I have had experience with is Monty Don and I find him to be very personable and really enjoy watching him and the dogs!

Love this what a great name for it. Geoff Hamiltons Barnsdale garden in Rutland is still kept exactly the same by his son. I went there with mum in law before covid struck and I’m not kidding, it just shows you what an avid watcher of GW I was in those days…I could almost tell you what was where and guide you around the garden. It’s like taking a walk down memory lane. Love that his protégé Adam frost is on it now x

I remember we used to watch it with our dad who was a great gardener and I think that’s probably where I get my love of it. I vaguely remember Percy Thrower and Geoff Hamilton. However I think my favourite for some unknown reason is Alan Titchmarsh and Carol Klein.

A great vlog Sean. I could listen to you talking like this all day. The video of Ruth Mott’s Country Christmas comes and goes online. I wish I could get a dvd of it. I’m more into cookery than gardening, but I do enjoy both. My late grandmother had all the books of the gardening series. Her garden was incredible, you’d have loved it. I’ve got a Geoff Hamilton book somewhere too. Sad he died during a cycling race for charity, in Merthyr if my memory serves me right. I really enjoyed this Sean, and I look forward to more. 😊

Dad use to grow veg in the back garden i remember spuds,cabbages and beans . Remember one year the caterpillars had most of the cabbages and caulis and then they crawled up the side of the house to pupate. There were loads of them😮. Think thats why i didn't eat veg when i was little only the beans and peas 😂😂. Geoff Hamilton got me interested in gardening . I still watch Monty and co but the biggest bug bare i have is when they reel off the name of a plant but don't tell you the common name. 😊😊

I love your stories from the past. You are very good at speaking. I agree, GW isn't the same and Geoff was wonderful. I also agree about the Victorian Garden. Great you actually knew the people involved. We watch it over and over every year. It's magical, cosy and very comforting. The music is lovely too. Ah the days when tv was quieter and not crammed with wall to wall music and box woke ticking.

Awh, l loved watching Harry Dobsons series, very relaxing and interesting. I have the dvd’s and collected the books over the years. It’s brilliant to what he did and left otherwise it would have been a lost generation of knowledge.

I always watched gardeners world and I loved Geoff Hamilton and still have his books. Geoff was ahead of the curve I think because I learned about working with mother nature in time to start gardening organically while I was still young and continue to do so. I was free to make mistakes because both parents were garden lovers but busy and allowed me to find my own feet and develop my interest in edibles that neither of them had. Gardening has been a lifetime hobby and my dear brother William uses his carpentry skills to build structures that allow me to garden now in my retirement in spite of severe disability and chronic illness. A nice little series.Geoff Hamilton was my favourite TV gardener.There is a KZfaq channel that visits his gardens at Rutland.I would love to go there one day.I have seen your interview with Peter Thoday and thoroughly enjoyed it.I bought the DVD set of the Victorian kitchen Garden after you mentioned it was available.All those TV garden presenters you mentioned,I remember them all...makes me feel old.my Friday nights used to be,a chippy tea,bottle of wine,all the gardening mags that were available and Gardeners World on TV.I did that for years,kept every magazine for years too 😂 Thats all in the past,mags are all gone,dont watch GW anymore.This is my go to channel now.

That was very interesting, I remember watching gardeners world in the 80's in black & white! Howard Drury, Arthur Billitt. After that Geoff Hamilton made a big impression on me & I was lucky enough to meet just before he died

Hello Lynne I grow runner beans too. I agree with you about the need for a summer. I use pieces of egg shell to keep the slugs and snails off. I don't grow many beans as I live alone. Good luck and best wishes to you and your garden .

Hi Sean, I am Denise and subscribed to your channels yesterday. Between then and now, I have watched several of your videos. I am from the United States, and am in the Deep South of the state of Mississippi. I own my own home on 1/3 acres (14,520 square feet). With prices rising in the grocery stores in the States, I am seriously considering planting a small garden for my own needs. Possibly cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes - and things like yellow squash. The Victorian Garden and the Victorian Kitchen are two of the series I have watched. I truly believe we all need to start doing things like planting gardens and learning to sew, because with the burdens my country and the UK have been under with our governments, we need to be prepared for more of the same. Hi Sean, thank you for such an insightful, wonderful and warm video. I remember the Victorian Kitchen Garden that was brilliant! Yes Geoff Hamilton on Gardeners World and Geoffrey Smith - they were both fantastic! Who inspired me from a young age was Percy Thrower when he used to help in the Blue Peter garden ah those were the days! That was what got me into gardening and my Dad who was a keen gardener! I can still remember as young girl helping him put the Nasturtiums in! 😊 He used to like growing Rhubarb, the only problem was we ended up with so much of it my Mum didn't know what to do with it all! 😅 So many a crumble was made! 😊 Oh and being overrun with Runner Beans! 😅 Anyway, this was a great idea Sean, looking forward to the next one. 🙂

Very enjoyable video enjoying sitting in company. When you live alone believe me, just spending gentle time, with coffee, with your company, makes us alone people feel less forgotten. Thank you. I think that tv will come full circle and the kind of gardening programmes, and the likes of Jack Hargraves, will return. So many people now trying to grow their own kitchen garden and vegetables, safer food since mass produced is now so questionable. I have a little garden but love learning new ideas.

Love the kitchen garden & Edwardian garden & such tv productions. How to grow & cook what produce you have during difficult times. I grew up eating seasonal fruit & veg. That’s what we try to do now but still dip into the supermarket (we aren’t too strict) but I love a glut of purple sprouting broccoli in early & late spring. Love it🤩 glut of gooseberries gives us delicious jams & crumbles. Thanks Sean for reminding me too of Geoff Hamilton. My old dads favourite tv gardener cos he showed us how to make structures like a coldframe or what we could buy Geoff always showed the make do & mend aspect of gardening & the new way of just buying it. Thanks Sean for the trip down memory lane🤩💕

Full confession, I'm not a very good gardener, I kill more than I grow unfortunately, but in between I have a few successes which make me very happy. I grew up in a flat and didn't know anything about gardening, then when I got married in the 70's I had my first garden and didn't know what to do with it. I started watching Geoffrey Smith and he inspired me so much that I sowed everything I could and it was all very successful, herbs, lettuce, cabbages, strawberries, peas, beans, even brussel sprouts, and a cucumber in the spare bedroom, summers were great then so lots of heat came in through the window. Life got in the way and I haven't gardened very much except a few veg lettuce, tomatoes, carrots. Sadly I believe Mr. Smith's Vegetable Garden series was lost, but I'd love to see it again if it's ever discovered in someone's attic or garden shed!! Many thanks for the nostalgia.

Sean, this is such an interesting story of how you got started in gardening. I love the Victorian Kitchen Garden & have watched it too...I loved watching Harry Dotson!! I watched all of these series & so enjoyed them all...Ruth Mott was so interesting in the Wartime special too! All of these series are so worth watching!! I had no idea about the story of Harry Dotson's death though...so sad that they couldn't find his wife's burial place later. Peter Thoday was the producer, I believe, & so wonderful that you got to go to Harry's "send off" too. Thank you for sharing too, Sean. Blessings, my friend♥

Iwas about six years old when my grandmother gave me my first ever pacmet of flower seeds ,, i was given a small bit of garden by our shed , planted the seeds as she told me next morning went to check , noithing they hadent grown 😢 i was mortified no flowers , she lived across the road from us at the time , so went over to let her know my seeds didn't work ,apparently you have to be patient, it takes time , noithing grows overnight 😊 ❤❤

Stateside, we had Crockett 's Victory Garden in the 60s/70s on PBS station out of Boston which I found fascinating as a kid. Later in the 80s there was a guy whose name I can't recall just now that had a show, The Square Foot Garden which also peaked my interest..oh yeah, it was Mel Bartholomew (pretty sure.) Anyhow, enjoying your channel. T Y

Geoff Hamilton was my favourite gardener from the show. I went to see Barnsdale not long after he had died. It was worth the visit.

Went on a lovely visit to Barnsdale after Geoff Hamilton died…..never knew he had a brother that was the spitting image of him made it very nostalgic seeing him there.

I used to enjoy these television shows and I have the cds. They were more than just gardening and cookery. They were like a mini soap when Ruth Mott would come away with her pearls of wisdom. Also remember in one programme a little boy gets his first taste of codliver oil (yuk I can taste it myself now). By the way, in Scotland, we say "scaling your tea". I stay in the next street to Beechgrove Gardens, Aberdeen. Now all gone and built over.

Thank you Sean, for sharing such lovely memories with us, i also love Roses. I have one climbing rose thats near 25years old it was height of 6ft wall am same in width then 2 years back bad storm took it down with trellis. I cried buckets, a friend cut it down to base an its back sn blooming right lovely. I stuck a piece in border against fence to mine an next door. Now ny neighbour has more blooms from it in her garden than mine. 😂😂, so going have to pop another one in. Would love a nice scented climbing rose.! If you could recommend one please! I've got a David Austin rose the generous gardener over an arch the hubby made. It's a pale pink climbing rose and smells lovely. I've also got a Gertrude Ghekl, sure I've spelt that wrong 😅 David Austin rose in the front garden . Thats a darker pink , that smells gorgeous too.

You didn't spill your tea! This brought back memories of watching "Crockett's Victory Garden" with Jim Crockett here in the US, in the '70s. We got that same feeling to go out and dig in the dirt...and we did! We had his books, too. We still have a garden and just recently learned of electroculture for plants....do you have any experience or thoughts on that? And for general questions, what is the common custom for dealing with dead loved ones in Wales? Burial or is cremation popular? Do those little Welsh cottages have basements? Thank you for a lovely chat....no cup of tea today, it's over 90F, so we got mineral water with ice cubes to sit with you.
