Neat project. I think it alternately pushes water out and sucks it in both of the tubes. At least that's how most of the pop pop engines I've seen work. Other wise, we'd probably just use heating loops in pipes instead of pumps and this would be called a thermosyphon. We use thermosyphon cooling on our refrigeration compressors at work but one end is slightly higher than the other so that the heat creates bubbles and makes the liquid refrigerant less dense on the heated side which causes the incoming side to be heavier than the outgoing side. In a pop pop engine, the water boils, creates steam, pushes water out of the tubes, creates a vacuum in the boiler, sucks water in (all tubes) and starts the cycle over. In refrigeration terms, you're riding the saturation line of the pressure/temperature chart for water- quickly changing state from liquid to vapor and back.

To help bending the tube without kinking: - leave it a little longer than it should be - squeeze one end shut - fill it up with very fine sand or salt - squeeze the other end shut - bend - cut off both ends

Agree with comment earlier. The steam must force water out of both exits and the water in the pipe must all turn to steam. Eventually the pipe will get hotter and hotter as there is no water to absorb the heat. Great video.

I don't get it. How is the water sucked in, when heat makes things expand? Wouldn't the water be pushed out of BOTH ends?
@benryves
@benryves 4 жыл бұрын
Water is indeed pushed out of both ends, and when the pressure inside the boiler drops water comes back in through both ends - not in one and out the other as alluded to in the video. Wikipedia has a good summary of how these engines work: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_pop_boat#Principle_of_operation

@4:47 Ummm that doesn't seem right? Which side of the pipe sucks vs blows? I would think both suck and both blow of the same amount. Which would still allow the spinning
@DnDmarc
@DnDmarc 4 жыл бұрын
If fresh water is sucked in one end and pushed out the other end, shouldn’t the pipe be angled differently. Seems as shown if one pipe is pushing and one pipe is pulling, they would work against each other?
@ThisNameWasTooLon
@ThisNameWasTooLon 2 жыл бұрын
you are correct. his explanation was incorrect. water exits both ends of the pipe simultaneously, as the expanded steam forces it out from the tube in both directions. eventually the steam has expanded as much as it can, the inside of the coil cools just a bit and the low pressure (vacuum) sucks water back into the pipe from both ends. the sucking in of water is multidirectional, whereas the exiting of the water is in one direction (resulting in different force vectors along the plane of the exit pipe)., and i believe this is why the forces do not just cancel.
