Spinning the Cessna 170B! Understanding the stall spin is an extremely important part of learning to fly! By learning to recognize what is happening we can recognize the progression in critical phases of flight and avoid them!

Many fun hours on my 1948 170, should never have sold her.

I made inquires to a Cessna organisation regarding spins and aerobatics in 170 aircraft . It appears the weight and balance of some 170 aircraft are not that accurate due to the aircraft’s history . It was also high lighted that these are 75 year old aircraft and the type of flight history is not recorded or known . While it does state iin the utility area it can be spun but with limitations . As I previously stated the vertical fin attachment is a fitting is that cracks . A Cessna engineer warned me about that fitting and the rear spar of the vertical fin. When was it last crack tested . This area was highlighted in the SIDS program by Cessna . Plus the trailing edge spar of the main wing is now presenting issues of corrosion and cracking . I have done over 1600 hrs in my 170 and to me she is an elegant old lady.

I was born in 1947, flew a 1947 Cessna 140 for years. I believe these priceless antique gems should only be flown with the greatest care. Learning acrobatics is exciting, and a spin is a basic aerobatic maneuver that everyone should practice at least once a year, both left and right, entering with or without power. it's about improving your ability to save your life, and the lives of your passengers. There are totally unexpected weather events that can and have torn aircraft apart when the stresses exceeded their design parameters and being proficient at recovering from unexpected attitudes will save your life. But intentionally inflicting stresses on 50 to 100+ year old aircraft parts is beyond stupid, it's criminal negligence. Ask any aeronautical engineer they will tell you the same thing. All metal, especially the parts you can't see, especially in an annual, fatigues over time when stressed. Use a much newer aircraft with an instructor with many hours in type and don't be embarrassed to wear a chute. Fly safe, fly smart and stay alive to fly another day. My prayers are with you.

I totally agree with mark, I have worked in the aviation industry since 1971 and now a retired engineer. Worked for the military and different airlines including the regulatory authorities. Yes it’s a great idea to fly within the regulations and the aircraft design limitations and even smarter to use common sense when flying and leave ego on the ground .

Structurally a spin is a pretty benign maneuver. It's all low airspeed and low G. If I wasn't confident in the structure of the aircraft in a spin, I would not be comfortable flying it in level flight. Nice video!

Question isn't the elevator supposed to be neutral or down? Looks like you have up elevator dialed in the whole time. Thanks.
@kobet66 ай бұрын
It depends on what your trying to Accomplish! to Spin the 170 you have to keep the elevator full aft or you will breck the stall and the spin ends.

do not spin a 170 it’s not approved . i asked a test pilot from cessna many years ago about as i was under the impression during a spin the aircraft is stalled . yes his answer was but the rudder and mounts isn’t designed for a safe recovery for the recovery from a spin.

Show me where it’s written!!
@davidnelson47077 ай бұрын
It’s not written that the aircraft can’t be flown inverted also . i am going through all the info i have on the 170 and will show when I find it. This aircraft is not aerobatic . The rear vertical rudder spar is so,flimsy.

UTILITY "No acrobatic maneuvers approved except those listed in the Airplane Flight Manual. Baggage compartment and rear seat must not be occupied." Intentional spins are listed in the airplane flight manual in the utility category. Interesting

Actually it is written that it can not be flown for aerobatics. It’s all in the 170 pilot operation manual! Check it out

I would be very carefull what I put on U tube as the FAA does look at U tubers and aircraft member clubs .
