Dame Vera Lynn and the Spitfire two great British icons. A sad occasion but the farewell was carried out with wonderful dignity. The military personal present were a fitting tribute to Dame Vera`s wartime support of the lads in the forces. A true patriot, RIP Dame Vera Lynn.

I grew up in Ditchling and met Dame Vera many times. As a teenager I worked in the village grocers. It was not unusual to see her around the village and in the shop. Dame Vera was a genuine person who rightly deserves respect. She often supported the local British Legion and village events.

Philip LAIDLAW Interesting that X4276 (KL-B) has the “bump” that covers the starter of a MK2, on the lower right hand side of the engine cowl, under and just forward of the exhaust. Must be as a result of parts availability during its restoration. (You can see it at 0.23 and again at 1.03.)

The Supermarine Spitfire was a fantastic fighter plane, fast and maneuverable. However, the design and the materials they were constructed from made them very easy to take down once a Luftwaffe pilot could get them in their sights. Now, the Hawker Hurricane was less maneuverable, but a much tougher bird. Love that sound of the Merlin engine, though.

@David Vance Depended on which Mk, and which armament. The Spitfire had the longest production run of the war (From pre-War actually) but got Larger and more powerful with each mark, and as the opposition became more threatening. Obviously, the Germans did the same. But new Aircraft on both sides got even more powerful towards the end.

Not quite.Me-109's had superior fire power but almost everyone agrees that an early Mark Spit could out turn a 109 and maybe avoid tail end destruction.Pilot skill was the main thing. The great German ace Galland said "the Spit was a worthy opponent, the Hurricane was simply a nice plane to shoot down."

The entertainment industry did more for the Brits during those dark days than a hundred Winstons could ever manage. It is a continuing shame therefore, that none of the Arts realise their full potential in that regard. But that is probably because they too play the same stupid games of personality, power and cold, lifeless cash. The need for, the pursuit of, the humbling nature of great Art is what keeps humanity sane for it balances our other burning need for knowledge and understanding. Which oddly enough was also what drove the 'Great' Universities to become a powerhouse of their cultures. They too are fading from significance because they lost sight of that higher, ennobling purpose.

These guys make it look easy, but flying any high performance single engine plane like the spitfire or hurricane or P-51 is no mean feat. The single engine creates a terrific torque that pulls the aircraft's nose in the direction of the rotation of the propeller. It had to be constantly compensated for, even on the runway. I mean you had to be able to handle a tricky aircraft, dodge enemies and shoot back. Amazing anybody could do it.

I believe the modern descendant of the Messerschmitt company has a restored 109. No chance of anything like the BBMF in Germany, though, as modern Germans have been brought up to be intensely self-hating about pretty much any aspect of their country’s history before 1945. Gravestones of war heroes are removed and monuments erected to deserters. In any event, the average “German” will be African or Arab within a couple of generations, so interest in what will be to them a “foreign” past can be expected to be pretty much nonexistent.

The spitfire without the invasion stripes, what is that a MarkII? I think that style of Spitfire is the best looking, simply a beautiful aircraft. I love how the UK uses their WW2 aircraft frequently in state and government functions and also funerals. I wish the US did that more. Of course the UK has a good reason to show these aircraft off because of the Battle of Britain. But it seems to me that the UK is a lot more patriotic than the US. Recently patriotism has been frowned upon in the US for some reason, I hope the UK never gets to that point. I fear that whenever the Queen happens to pass, patriotism will be tested in the UK. Hopefully I’m wrong, but don’t ever let patriotism wane in your country like it has in the US because it will then turn into disrespect, then destruction to monuments and cities. Let the US be a learning experience for other countries. Freedom shouldn’t be a pass to be free to destroy and dismantle your own country. Freedom comes at a high cost that a lot of us doesn’t ever see. Many people never take the time to ask themselves the question why they have freedom in the first place. But yet it is easy to for them to find faults with the system of government that provides that freedom. A lot of those people these days seem to think that destruction is an answer for the faults they have with their government instead of actually trying to make a difference by finding others that feel the same and then talking to your elected officials to hear your issues. They don’t want to put that kind of work into it, it easier for them to go out and tear something down. I’m sorry to make this political, I didn’t mean to go this in depth. I just don’t think a lot of the younger generation realizes the gravity of that all our elders that have passed on built and fought making sure their children and their children’s children lived in a world where they wouldn’t have to worry about the problems of invasion from an evil dictator and that countries of free men worked together against tyranny and formed a bond and structured a safer world for future generations. I just don’t think people get it today.
