Easily Lumix... but I am defiantly a fanboy. Sony's have overheated on me in the past and it really screwed me. Scared for life. That's the biggest advantage of the S52 over the A74. The Fan. The A74 WILL over heat on you at some point. You won't know when or where... it will just happen. The Lumix fan will save your A$$.

How is the Sony good in the low light 3:40 when it is so dark? Looks to me as though the Lumix wiped the floor with the Sony in all the low light test.

Great video Sam. The S5II seems like a great option in the under $2K market. I've been shooting with the A7IV until battery runs out of juice and never got an overheating warning. I live in Miami FL. Although, setting the "bypass high temp warning menu option" is the first thing I do when I unbox any Sony camera for the first time.

Awesome review. I agree on real world tests and unexpected lighting condition when testing color rendering. Also, the S5 Mark I not having a cooling fan is one of the reasons why it was a nonstarter for me. A camera with a fan can still have problems unrelated to overheating so adding the possibility of overheating into the mix for me is a “no go” situation. I’m glad to see that the Mark II has a cooling fan. 👍

Not only is the S5ii the best bang for your buck, it's over all just a superb camera for filmmakers and photographers, top notch quality through and through. Last year I had to decide between Lumix / Sony / Canon, I went with the S5 for V-log and the stabilization and it has completely changed the game for me, I ended up buying 2 of them, such an insane camera. The S5ii will be my wedding film camera, especially for the gimbal work with that beautiful autofocusing system. Amazing review!

Awesome video Sam! Love the Lumix cameras, got the S5 II as my second cam! I would like to say with the over heating, it's not that big of an issue anymore as long as you know what precautions to take. One being the thermal setting on High & Two keeping the back screen open. I've been using the A7 IV for all my weddings in 2023 and it's not over heated once. One wedding in July 2023 was in a conservatory and outside was already 40C. The camera was in front of the window under the sun, filmed in 4K 24fps for just over 30 minutes and no warnings or overheating.

I switched from Panasonic (GH5's) to Sony a year ago (because I wanted decent autofocus and full frame) and I've had the A7iv for most of that time. Never had an overheating issue but I did set the camera to high temp mode straight away. I've made loads of videos I love with the A7iv, all handheld (except the interview bits). Don't regret the move but if the Lumix S5ii had been available when I made the switch I may have stayed with Panasonic. Too late now though. Too heavily into Sony with an A1 on the way. Another great video Sam. Thanks & keep em coming :-).

Very informative video! I've been deciding between these two cameras for videography work. I currently use a Black magic 6k pro (BMPCC6KPro) and i cant deal with not having Auto-Focus anymore in the "Run and Gun" situations I've found myself in so often nowadays. the lumix being directed towards video on top of being a good chunk cheaper than my current camera is really making me consider it for trade in. plus i could work with the lumix on a gimbal with way less hassle.

Enjoyed the video. Have owned Panasonic cameras in the past and if the S5ii came out a year or so ago I probably would have bought it. Having said that, I have owned the Sony A7IV since release and not once has it overheated on me. The time that your camera took to overheat doesn't sound right at all unless if maybe you never changed your heat setting limit to high. It's the first thing I changed when I got the camera and it's been great in that sense.
@avarmadillo

You're right. That's probably what happened. I have a Sony A7iv, set on high, and has not overheated, but I bought it in December 2022, and it hasn't had the Texas summer heat treatment. Plus, I'm sick of shooting only in 16x9. I want all those Panasonic assist features for video, features like waveforms, spot meter, shutter angle, V-log, vector scope, etc; features that don't even seem to be on Sony's radar all these years. Plus, the S5 is built so, so, so much better than the Sony.

@@avarmadillo Majority of issues you are mentioning are fixable by using an external monitor with all professional tools at your hand on the much better and bigger screen than the integrated one. Shutter angle is just an interpretation of time in the constant manner regardless of the aperture setting and doing it in your mind becomes a second nature once you get used to this workflow.

The Sony will be primary for stills, the Panny primary for video, because I'm constantly anxious about the heat. It will still be cheaper than an a7rv even with a nice lens (the a7siii doesn't have enough megapixels for my needs) and I much prefer the APSC crop instead of pixel binning in 60p which is still cropped lmao.

I have preordered an S5II with the new Panasonic 14-28 macro lens and I am getting a Sigma DG DN 105mm f/2.8 Macro lens. I traded in my GH6. Although the GH6 has great features like ALL-I, 300fps, no real rolling shutter issues and internal ProRes and ProRes RAW external, there is one reason I traded it. I rarely use ProRes on the GH6.due to the large file sizes and I normally record videos in 4K and in the firmware update, Panasonic left out UHD resolution in ProRes for some reason but that is not the issue. I kept finding my video footage on the GH6 came out a bit soft no matter what settings I used, especially landscapes. I was using an Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO lens as my main standard lens and it could have been soft on the GH6 as the Panasonic 9mm f/1.7 I had looked a bit sharper but still slightly soft with fine details, maybe due to in camera noise reduction (I left noise reduction at 0). Even with that, I found the videos a bit too noisy in the shadows with DR Boost ON, and that is with V-Log properly exposed. I like the test footage I have seen from the S5II a lot and while I don't always need autofocus, there are times now that I would like to have it. I also prefer Panasonic cameras menu layout and ergonomics (Been using Panasonic cameras since the GH4 so I am used to it), waveform, vectorscope and exposure meter, focus transitions, punch in focus while recording, USB-C battery power and colours and have never really liked how Sony colours look or Sony's menu system. I still have my GH5 that I have had since it came out in 2017 and with the Olympus 12-40 lens, it is sharp enough and sharper than it was on the GH6 and will use it for more casual photography when I want to carry around a smaller camera and might use it as a secondary camera to shoot 4K video when I don't need to use the S5II.

I have both but concerning the colours me and m photographer buddies find we always have to dial back the greens on the S series (a lot sometimes) Edit: i find some parts of this video slightly biased. As I own both cameras, the overheating on the Sony is a myth. I’ve used it all summer in scorching heat and humidity without a single overheating issue. I once forgot it in my tightly sealed sling bag still recording, went to see a movie and pulled it out of the oven-like bag still running. It’s a simple menu setting. And so far the AF on the Sony is still more reliable and has the extremely good point tracking feature that is immensely useful in hybrid shooting. I love my S5 mark I and ii, but credit where it’s due. Also, the A7iv is awesome for photos. Not saying the S5 ii isn’t good, but the extra pixels do show (also in video). And the Sony does have higher bitrates available (eg 400 mbps in all Intra). It does show in scenes with a lot of movements or particles (but maybe not on KZfaq). That said, if video is your mainstay, the S5 mark ii (I’d wait for the IIx) is better because of its tools and better value as well. However, lens selection is what brought me to go Sony in addition to my s5s.

Great video. Thank you. I noticed when you were sliding the RODE box around the screen for the tracking, the rolling shutter was terrible. That was just a box. I really want to grab the Panasonic, but I shoot a lot of kids parties and quite often the kids are moving through the frame rather quickly. I think this was an oversight of your review and should be noted. Just my opinion.

Yeah, you nailed the point. I switched from Sony to Fuji because of overheating issues - IN THE STUDIO. The A1 could not record more than about 25min of 8k. The Fuji X-H2 does 2 hours with no problem, and the qualitiy is about 98% there. Almost Nobody talks about that! Just got the Lumix as well to have at least one fullframe cam. Great review!

In my opinion, as a wedding filmmaker I was a little bit disappointed with the crop in the 4k60. i preferred the 4k60 without crop instead of the 6k30 by far. And people may argue that slow motion is not essential but in some weddings it is essential, and we all know it.

This is an honest review I soon found out myself, Always this one question how long can I film until it fails me? And then it turns out with the Sony A7IV you don't know when, but it will definitely fail even with the dust caps open! And then my second question, how long after overheating is it ready again! I've been lucky enough to be mistrustful and not, like my Nikon, stuck with a bunch of lenses and cameras that no one wants anymore. I'm definitely going for the Panasonic.

What needs to be said and said STRONGLY is that Panasonic / Lumix are a tremendous team of people who listen, improve and are easy to contact. The issues I have with all Sony , from the big ones to little ones is that theres a massive political divide in the company and they're great at new products but hard to get a human to talk to. If the product is good , remember the service and aftercare is wonderful.

I'm not a Sony shooter but I hear this criticism enough that it makes me wary of switching (which I've strongly considered). Not enough support, which does not pair well with their less durable bodies. I hear Panasonic has great service, but I wouldn't know as I've never needed it because their cameras are built like tanks :)

So you're saying it took 5 years for the message to be delivered to them? People have been complaining about the focus in their cameras since 2018 when the A7III came out. I think it's a bit of a stretch to say "they listen". I think it was more, they were forced to change or they would go out of business b/c they are the lowest market share of all camera producers out there.

Great video - but I still don't understand how people get their a7iv's to overheat that easily using regular framerates. I shoot with an a7iv and a7Siii and both perform just fine in professional settings: Recording KZfaq videos, Speeches at weddings, Livestreaming for businesses. Set the Overheat setting un the menu to high, flip out the screen and that seems to do the trick for me.

I actually had the A7iv and sold it for the FX30 because of the cinema features. But, I shot my first feature film with the Panasonic GH5. And I chose the GH5 then because of the superior skin tones. I switched to Sony because of the AF. Now, with the S5ii, I'm drooling all over again. Though if I were to switch, it would be for the S5iix because of its ability to record to an SSD, raw over HDMI (or SSD), and other cinema features. I've always preferred Panasonic skin tones. I want to hold onto the FX30. But, I will wait until May when the S5iix comes out and think about it then. Thanks for the comparison. It helps a lot.

@@wildlifehouse I'm glad I got the FX30 for the AF and cinema features. I don't really shoot many photos. But, as I said, I prefer the skin tones of Panasonic. And unless I'm shooting in Sony's Cine4 profile - not SLog3 - I have to fix the skin tones in post every time. With Panasonic, the skin tones are great straight out of camera. Plus, the low light capabilities of the full frame S5ii is compelling in itself. Now with the S5ii, I am really drawn towards Panasonic again. The FX30 can shoot 16-bit raw externally, but, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to shoot ProRes RAW externally with the S5ii if I so choose. I will try to keep the FX30, but I am seriously considering the S5ii. If I can keep the FX30, that would be great. But, I'm just a low budget/indie filmmaker, so money is a key factor.

I believe it’s in the first batches of the A7iv, those overheated because they have the original firmware, but when the firmware got updated overheating seems close to nonexistent. The new batches of the A7iv have the new firmware, meaning for those who purchased it a year after the initial release, the overheating is not an issue.
