I just purchased Wingspan and was intimidated to start playing because it seemed more complicated than I had anticipated. I watched two other tutorials before this one, but this was by far the most helpful! Thank you for not only explaining all of the rules and components, but also walking us through round play.

Thanks for the instructions. However, one of your ads halfway through was completely inappropriate as we were watching this as a family to learn how to play. It was an ad with a sexual line art animation of a woman sucking a man’s ______ and the ad started talking about the size of the man’s _____. I quickly skipped through the ad but unfortunately it wouldn’t allow that til we were 4 seconds in and my child had heard and seen this horrible, inappropriate ad. I’m appalled. You need to make KZfaq aware and find a way of blocking inappropriate ads such as this from your videos

I'm a huge fan of Wingspan, it's one of my all-time favorite board games along with Terraforming Mars. You are right about how the rulebook is a bit light on details for the backstory but I think the backstory of the game would best be explained like this: You and each other player of the game is an ornithologist that has obtained or created a private wildlife preservation. The goal of the game is to fill your wildlife sanctuary/preservation with the most impressive birds (to get respect points with your other ornithologist/bird watcher friends) which is represented by having the highest amount of points in the end. When you take the "play a bird" action in the game it means that you have successfully coaxed a family of that bird type to start to live in your bird sanctuary.

We watched several videos for Wingspan before playing it including this one. I've played a number of euro-board games but am no expert and my wife is a very casual board gamer, at best. We really enjoyed this game and are looking forward to playing it again.

I think a fun motivation for amassing the birds would be to create a Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center that keeps the birds that can't be realized back into the wild :3

I bought the digital deluxe version of Wingspan on Steam while it was on sale but felt so overwhelmed that I returned it. Last night, I found this video, which made everything clear. Unlike all the other tutorial videos that were much longer and convoluted, this one was concise and easy to understand. I repurchased the game and am excited to start playing! We played this and came up with backstory as builders of safe heavens for these birds. Trying to build best environment to provide birds with food and place to lay eggs. I'm from Finland and here we have many places with rich variety of birds in nature

I found this complete game at a Goodwill grand opening today for five dollars! I have now watched three KZfaq videos on this game. So far, I am thoroughly intimidated to even attempt to play it. This sounds more complicated than the cones of Dunshire. To be honest, I don’t even know where to start, even after watching three videos. What is my objective? If I play sorry or Uno or Monopoly, the game is very clear. Stepping into the world of this game to learn, it is like studying for a DMV test! Any tips or encouragement??

First, congrats on a great Goodwill find! $5 is a great price for a complete copy of this game. I am going to assume that ours is one of the three videos you have watched about how to play Wingspan. Kudos to you for pushing through. In Wingspan, the objective is to gain points by placing birds, laying eggs, tucking cards, and with round and card bonuses. If you are having trouble getting your head around it, I suggest finding a "play-through" video. Once you have a good understanding of it, Wingspan is a fantastic game. If you have any specific questions about the game, feel free to come back and drop them here. Just played this game for the first time today. I won the game and it was really really fun. The common raven and this other bird killbreed or something lets you draw cards and food whenever you want basically. I got so lucky with those.

Your video production and effects, highlighting areas on the mat, and areas on the cards, makes it very easy to follow along and understand!! When you play birds do you get to activate the birds in that row? Or they only activate when doing actions?

When you play a bird, the action goes on the very top of the playmat. As it makes it way to the left, it does not active any birds. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

So if the game ends in a tie, we only count the remaining playable food for the tiebreaker, cached food does not count, is that correct? Just making sure.

how many cards can you draw and when do you draw new cards ?

The number of cards you will draw is determined by the action you are taking or the effect of the activation. If you are using the "Draw Cards" ability, the number is determined by the number of birds in the row. This is shown on the playmat. (See 10:22) Some cards will also give you the ability to draw a card/s. Follow the instructions on that card. Let us know if you have any additional questions! Thanks for watching!

What if you run out of room on the board for more birds?

Once a row if full, you can no longer place birds there. If you some how fill the entire board with birds, you can still lay eggs and cache birds. I hope the helps! Thanks for watching!

All these KZfaq videos are great in explaining the various, contrived Wingspan rules piled on to form one, big labyrinth. If you love birds and mind-numbing complexity, plus don't find a lot else competing for your discretionary time, Wingspan's for you. I'll stick with chess.

Wow! That's the first time I have heard that! I'm sorry that happened to you. Unfortunately, we don't have any way of controlling what ads are shown by KZfaq. However, you could take a look at your settings in KZfaq and Google. There is almost certainly a way to adjust the settings to restrict those types of ads. Again, I'm sorry that happened to you and I hope you are able to find a way to adjust your settings to avoid this issue in the future.
