It's #MoMonday!
In this segment, Mo Pinel takes a viewer question in regards to what is a better strike comparing shots that split the 8-9 vs. the traditional 1-3-5-9 ball path and carry. Great question and great info, let us know what you think in the comments below!

This doesn't just explain why we get more strikes, it also explains why we now leave 9 pins.

You leave 9 pins when the ball overhooks and goes right through the 8, missing the 9, instead of between the 8 and 9.

@@hellgiver21 not quite overhook, overdriven. Too much ball, too much traction stops the ball from deflecting enough to take the 9. How many boards you cover has little to do

I remember back in the mid 80's seeing my ball split the 8-9 on many of my strikes and I thought they were good shots while my friends had more swishing mixers from hitting the pocket thin.

Interesting. I guess this backs up a theory that I've had for a while that playing straighter yields more stone 8 pins, because it typically requires less axis rotation, and playing inside and hooking it results in more 9 pins, because it typically requires more axis rotation. That and combined with layouts and ball technology as Mo alluded to.

I hooked the ball swinging from the 15/17 boards out to about 10 and I left way more stone 8's than solid 9's

Can you explain why it's more important to have your feet in the right place with the right ball then to hit your mark now a days? I'm asking from a student of the game point of view.

It's all about angles. Assuming you know where to put your feet (and that you throw a decent shot), getting them in the right place will get your ball on a line that will help you get the entry angle needed to exit the pin deck in the area Mo mentioned. This is because shot shape is the name of the game today. You need to get you feet in the right place so your shot shape gets the ball to the pocket in the right place with the best angles. Even if you miss your mark by a few boards your carry percentage should increase by getting the ball started on a favorable line thanks modern equipment and lane conditions. Now when you bowl on sport shots those things still hold true the only difference is you have to hit your mark too because there is very little margin for error.

On normal patterns, there is lots of room, recovery & hold to start the ball from the right spot in the heads. Patterns are better & balls are more dynamic. Better lengthwise transition.

Having your feet in the right place will allow you to maximize the forgiveness present in today’s oil patterns. This goes hand in hand it’s one of Mo’s favorite teachings....where your ball hooks is far more important than how much your ball hooks...again, take advantage of the advantage the ball and lane conditions give you.

Mo mentioned layout. Here is what most bowlers don't understand, your layout produces a certain hook shape. That hook shape is locked in the ball at drilling. Put this together with What Mo is saying, get your feet in the right place to maximize the hook shape your ball provides, then, you will be able to split the 8-9 more often.

If I was leaving too many 4 pins, I need to move a board or so left.

I believe I’m a low speed/low rev senior. Have no idea on either. I usually target the 15 board, foot at the 20 or 21 board. My DV8 Outcast has low flare 2-3”. Have I got this right? Also have a Storm Optimus solid, which supposed to have up to 6” flare. Used to target the 10 board, foot 5 or 6 boards left of that. Don’t know my axis tilt or PAP. But as I have been improving, my oil ring has moved from the equator up closer to my middle finger insert. Don’t know if that’s good or bad, as I am still inconsistent on release to get some rev’s.

The DV8 Outcast is a low flare and hook potential ball, if that's your question. Keep practicing and working on that release! Good luck! Here's some info about the tracking of your bowling ball that might be helpful: www.liveabout.com/bowling-ball-tracks-explained-420730 The tracking changes are likely due to the release on your ball. Here's information on this: www.bowlersreference.com/Bowler/WristAndFingers/ One more good one: www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=wiki.bowlingchat.net/wiki/images/0/05/Bowling_Ball_Oil_Tracks.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjVr9jn35TpAhWKKM0KHS0GB8AQFjAAegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw0bteYucxJZ2xjKPqLrsu25&cshid=1588408883917
