That 6 way on that chunk would be perfect for me!! I had that happen too a few years ago when I blew my shoulder apart and was laid up from surgery for 3 months and I had big chunks and my wife had to deal with them big pieces that ended up getting split smaller!! So I really think about that now! Stay safe my friend!!

Well done Sir! Be very informative . When I first got my splitter, I used the 6 way almost exclusively. Most of my rounds are quite large. I’ve found I’m now using the 4 way the most where you have more control of what you end up with. Thanks for sharing Buddy 😎

I use the 4 and 6 way I also put a couple of 5 gallon buckets under where the smaller pieces fall and then just use them to keep the fire going.

Great video of the 3 wedges! I use the 4 way a lot. But i do use the 6 way too on my bigger rounds.

Great video. I think the four way is the most versatile.

I do storm cleanup for people and sometimes split downed trees for them. I always ask how big they want their sticks and more often than not it's pretty small. I like half and half for my stove and HUGE chunks for my boiler. Like those 1/4 splits are small ones for me BUT I don't have a little boss man to keep in mind.

When you use the single wedge you can stack your 4 pieces and split then through the width. Makes a faster drying easier handle pieces of wood. Just a suggestion.

Another great, informative video. The 4-way wedge has been on my Wolfe Ridge 100% of the time, so far. Once the round is split, I’ll run the 4-way all the way up and finish the 1/4s to size.

The 6 ways wedge is good for the perfect sized firewood round. Much bigger rounds will have to be resplit and that is harder with a 6 way wedge. I think the 4 way wedge strikes the balance between versatility and productivity.

For me the flat slabs are a no nonsense way of stacking👍

Morning Dan! I always split mine as big as I can handle. I never thought about someone else but that's a good way to look at it. I just ordered a 35HO from chris at Wolfe ridge with the 6 way. Should be here in June, I'm stoked to get it here.

The flat slabs is also good way to make cross stacking pieces. Have a great day!

Hi Dan - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I have no experience of multi knife splitting. Logs over here have to be smaller to fit fireplaces/stoves and most are cut to 12 inches. I had a half cord order last week for 9 inch logs. Many processor produced logs have to be resplit before sale. It's a major reason why I favour a vertical splitter since it enables greater accuracy in sizing split pieces as well as reducing log manhandling on the table.

Great video! Lots of great information so thanks for making it. It be great if you made another video where you’re splitting different size rounds and how are you adjust the splitter as you come across different sizes. Out west here nobody has boilers. All the wood we split is for our customers. And when we first started we made the pieces way too big. Fortunately we learned. Again thanks for such an informative video. We should be getting our Wolfe Ridge splitter in the next 4 to 6 weeks hopefully.

I only have a single wedge splitter currently. I've seen a slip over 4-way attachment made for I think Countryline splitters sold at Tractor Supply. I think it would work with my single wedge so I'm tempted to go pick one up.

I still like the way a box wedge turns out square pieces of firewood that stacks or bundles like a dream.

I'll usually split mine in half instead of leaving it that big slice like you do it burns better in my wood furnace.

I can tell you when we bought wood for camping we always ended up hand splitting it smaller before we used it.

The slabs also look pretty stable when stacked. My buddy practically gives away slab wood from his lumber mill. Maybe that is the way to go

Another thing to consider is if you have alot to split for the boiler is same size round single wedge is four pushes for four pieces and four way is one push for four. Just shape is different. Just saying

For your single blade cutter you could have a plate welded to fit and have 3 vertical blades. Reduce your time and cut 4 slabs in one go! It should cost much for a local welder to fashion a custom blade like that :) I'd consider it for the amount you are cutting.

A single wedge is endlessly flexible. You can split your wood into any size and shape- just depends on how you use it. As standard equipment, it's also the least expensive option. Possibly important for homeowners and homesteaders. But, like you pointed out- it requires the most time and effort to make BIG chunks into small ones. That's why they make options! As for the shreds and splinters, those go right into my tinder/small kindling bucket! I'd love to have one, if only to deal with the ugly, snotty, knot filled chunks. (the price of woodhounding for free wood!) Can't justify the expense, though. So, axe it is. Rental could also be an option.

Time to tighten that air cleaner!
