After seeing this video I splurged on a wonderful book of Georgia O'Keeffe watercolors from her early years. I'm so glad I did!! She wrote to a friend in July 1917: "Cheap paper like this is a great friend lately -- A stack of it almost a foot high makes me feel downright reckless."

I'm with you on the palettes. I will never come up with a set of colors that I don't want to move around and reorg. So lately I've just opted for half pans and a traditional metal palette. I do my mixing on either a Corelle plate or my Mijello palette. The Mijello palette has nice ramps and I wish someone would come out with a palette with ramps that had pan inserts for the ramps so you could move the colors around. That would be my ideal world.

I'm not sure I completely understand the ramp situation, but have you looked at Robax palettes? They have all kinds of interesting configurations...
@ArtBrain
@ArtBrain 2 жыл бұрын
@@iritlandgraf Well, the little Mijello Palette like the one I'll link to has little ramps on its wells, so that you can touch the paint with the side of your brush and then if you want, either mix it in its well or slide it to the mixing space. It is so handy and so easy on brushes....except that you only have room for 18 paints and the wells are fixed, as you mentioned in your video. So wouldn't it be nice if there was a palette with the same sort of configuration, but with little "well inserts", so you could load up the paint, have the little ramps, but be able to pick up the "well inserts" and swap them around. For this to work, all wells would need to be the same size and shape, so this Mijello palette would need to be recreated, but I would love it. I love these little palettes, except for the fixed wells. www.amazon.com/Mijello-Airtight-Watercolor-18-Well-Fuchsia/dp/B002664868/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3UWZNYIJZ9QP7&keywords=mijello+palette&qid=1639767100&sprefix=mijello+palette%2Caps%2C127&sr=8-3

I just realized that the Robax palettes have the well inserts! They just need to have one angled side on each well and they'd be what I want! ;-). The wells on the Mijello palettes facilitate rolling the brush on it's side to pick up the paint, which is hard to beat.
@iritlandgraf
@iritlandgraf 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they have inserts which is brilliant, but I think they have one model that is angled?

The yarn in your background is so yummy. My two loves are knitting and watercolor-so your decor speaks to me. I get paper sheets (Fabriano artistico and Arches) when on sale-buy them 10 at a time for a discount and I make my own sketchbook or cut them to the size I want. You can even get Canson and Strathmore sheets if looking at less expensive sheets. Great advice as always.

This was such an informative video. Thank you SO much! I actually started with the Sennelier watercolor set as well--still love it so much and agree with everything you said. I want to expand my collection since I've hit pan on a few of those Sennelier colors, so your suggestions are so helpful! The dot cards will help find similar colors in other brands to the ones I clearly use a lot so I can try a new brand without buying a whole set. 😀

I really enjoyed this video and agree with so much of what you said. I was lucky enough when moving into watercolor from oil painting to have received recommendations for excellent supplies, so I don’t NEED to buy more or different supplies, but I love haul and review videos for ideas, new products and new colors. My splurge-worthy supply is a pochade box that really fits your style (I use a U.GO medium). This works outdoors, but is also an excellent small space indoor easel. The other supply that I love is a good portable palette with lots of mixing space - and recommend a Holbein metal palette. I’m still looking for the perfect porcelain studio palette.

So currently I have splurged on a bunch of paul rubens paints. I got two 12 pan sets. Mind you I also hold watercolor classes at my work, so while I foot the bill, they do serve me twice. And I am loving the paint. It is super smooth. It creates exceptionally smooth washes. And the paint it packed with pigment. I have qor, DS, M.graham and winsor newton, and these paul rubens might be the brightest most pigmented of them all.

Hello Irit! I love your videos and thank you for sharing your art and talent! I was wondering, in this video and others where you are seated in the same spot, the painting to your left shoulder, the one closest to your yarn, do you have a tutorial on how to paint that? I absolutely LOVE it, and would really like to learn to recreate it. I've looked through your videos but can't seem to find it.

I would maybe also add a water container that gives you joy - which in my case is a favorite pickle jar, but I know you love your Jackson’s three part container. The Fabriano notebook is really great for gouache. I like it for watercolor (cream-colored pages are different for me) and I love it for gouache. It is beautiful and semi-affordable from Cult Pens. It looks much nicer than than my handmade Arches sketchbook, which is also super fun. I can't wait to fill it up and decide if I should buy the biggest one.

Irit, I have a gorgeous porcelain palette (American Journey Cavalcade from Cheap Joes) that has 30 outer watercolor wells and 2 very large mixing areas. Sadly, after using it for awhile, I realized that I don’t like my watercolor mixtures all merging in one big space and that I prefer to squeeze from the tube, but I absolutely won’t mix on anything but porcelain now. So, I have several smaller porcelain pallets I purchased on Amazon ranging from $8 to $30. Treat yourself and find a smaller one (or two! 😊) that lets you use the colors you want and truly allows you to see the color you are mixing as they don’t bead up. Blessings from the States!

Hello Irit. I so agree on curated palettes. When there is an artist who inspires you and you love their colour choices it makes sense that their curated palette would give you joy. KZfaq us great for discovering new “tools” but also seeing those “tools” in action. One of the aspects of Tracy Lebenzon’s brushes that I love is the organic handles….feels great in the hand. Mixing on ceramic is really another level of experiencing painting with watercolor. Plus no staining and suuuper easy cleaning ! The big Ceramic studio palettes with wells to pour your paint in don't work for me either. So I use a palette with no mixing place just to store my paint (I use the palette tower from studio of MM) and then ceramic palettes/ plates for mixing purposes. It works for me because I don't really paint outside of my home (I have a small metal travel palette but I barely use it ) and it can store a lot of colour without taking too much desk space.

Great video! I personally have way too many artist grade watercolors from various brands. I store the tubes by brand but I'm starting to think I should reorganize by color. I have separate palettes for each brand and it's getting quite cumbersome. After having painted for four years I wish I could go back and just use one brand. My guilty splurge was Sennelier tubes curated by Billy Showell. ;) I was the one who didn't like the Fabriano journal. Though it beautiful inside and out, it's not quite right for my style. For more loose styles it's perfect. I agree about paper. I have many blocks of Arches and also many sketchbooks from Bee Creative which seem impossible to find now. My best art books are Jean Haines' books and Billy Showell's.

I spend month before buying my artist grade set researching all the brands and pigments to not buy per exempel 5 Quinn magenta because the colores can have just diffrent names. On brushes and paper I find it much more difficult because I can´t buy a 80 dollar brush just to try if I like it. so I try cheap ones and when it feels good I research a high quility one and usually that one makes me extrem happy then.

They are less expensive per sqm, in comparison with the paper price of blocks, however, if you use one sheet per painting, then indeed, imperial sheets are quite costly :D Idea is that you buy big sheet and cut into smaller pieces instead of buying block of that smaller size.
