Agree that this is a good topic. The films in this genre run the gamut from movies that simply use institutions for “spooky” atmospherics, to good ones that explore the horrors institutions have inflicted on people, to ones that show what happens when certain disorders go untreated, to terrible ones that just treat all people with mental health issues as “bogeymen”.

The Following was a fantastic TV show about an Edgar Allen Poe cult. Not based on real events, but it was really interesting and well done.

A TV show I noticed that wasn’t on here is The Following; it stars Kevin Bacon and James Purferoy and is about an FBI agent that has been trying to track down a serial killer obsessed with Edgar Allan Poe for years who has created a cult surrounding himself. Definitely more on the crime/thriller side but super binge-worthy!!!

Okay Emma, Films I've seen..... The Wicker Man Ticket To Heaven Split Image (Thanks for mentioning this. I find it to be a pretty interesting film.) The Sound Of My Voice MIdsommar The Endless Helter Skelter Films I've seen that would make my list of great films about cults. The Invitation Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones Eyes Wide Shut September Dawn The Seventh Victim Kill List And although this isn't a list for documentaries: Wild Wild Country (Great complex documentary) A special word about Children of the Corn: it's more a supernatural film with a cult, which would then open the doors to a completely different array of films Rosemary's Baby, Suspiria, Hereditary, The Shrine (absolutely chilling underrated film !!!), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, etc. Which I don't think we can do in a list of films about real world cults. Films you mentioned that I really should see. 1 The Other Lamb 2 Martha Marcy May Marlene 3 Waco 4 The Master 5 Big Love 6 The Sacrament 7 The OA 8 Red State 9 Faults 10 Savage Messiah Thanks for a great list and recommendations to get the brain sparking.

Great list, Emma. For more Manson, check out the TV show 'Aquarius.' It centers on both a fictional detective (played by David Duchovny) and a young girl (played by Emma DuMont) who have their lives interrupted by Manson and his family. Most of the major Manson players are there and the show even tells part of the story involving Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys.

The original 'Helter Skelter' was a 1976 T.V. mini-series that terrified me as a kid. Steve Railsback was utterly convincing as Charles Manson.

I love that you included Split Image. I feel like people forget about it. It is a bit cheesy but maybe that's why I dig it so much! There are so many I haven't seen and some I just want to rewatch now. Awesome job on the list!

Few movies from your list I saw, some I already had on my to-watch list and rest I just added to it ;) Really nice video. And if we are talking about cults in movies - Bad Times at the El Royale. Like I know it's not really film about cult, but this subplot is extremely important in story and Chris Hemsworth as Billy Lee (the cult leader) is incredibly good.

Hey Emma. Good list as usual. I've seen most of these except the new one you mentioned at the beginning and that 2001 TV movie. Also I recommend watching the TV show 'The Path' with Aaron Paul. I think it only went for two seasons.

I have watched all, but Big Love. The Endless, Sacrament, and Red State are great. My suggestions: The Invitation and Apostle. The Lodge isn't a cult movie, but good movie with a former cult member. And finally, another commenter mentioned it, but you have to watch Holy Hell.

Seen four. One of the things that is scary about cults is that nobody who is in a cult believes that they are in a cult. It's always "other people are in cults, this leader guy that I follow is different".

Great video, Emma! I strongly recommend a tv show called On Becoming a God in Central Florida, starring Kirsten Dunst. It's about a pyramid/Ponzi scheme, but it definitely feels like a cult. There's only one season so far, but it was really good.

I was waiting for you to say The Colony starting Emma Watson- very dark and realistic story of a cult in Chile during the 1973 coup. Not overly violent or gory but the leader of the cult gave me the creeps for weeks!

Another great TV show about cult is The Leftovers. Truly one of the most fascinating tv shows I've ever seen, it's crazy, weird, ambitious, poetic, and just beautiful.

Hi Emma - I just saw Sound Of My Voice - I loved it. You may not have included it in your main films because it does have a twist. Besides starring in it, Brit Marling also co-wrote it. And I'm impressed at how they made such a great film on such a small budget.

have you seen Wild Wild Country on Netflix? it's so well made and the story is really interesting from beginning to end even though they leave some stuff out of it. also I'm surprised you mentioned The OA as I've never really seen it that way but I can see why it could be considered somewhat of a cult. it's my favourite tv show ever I'm happy to hear you've seen it!!! Thanks for this video! I have only seen 8 out of 20 so I'm writing down a lot of your recommendations. There's a 90s Spanish movie called Los sin nombre (those without a name, but I couldn't find what was it called in English) and it's really good and creepy. It was directed by Jaume Balaguero (same director as REC). I also recommend Sister Wives, a reality TV show about polygamy and mormons, I found it very entertaining and somehow creepy

I have seen a few on this list . Waco was really good. If you can check out the ‘70’s made for tv version of Healter Skelter . Based on the book by Vincent Bouglosi ( who prosecuted Manson). It’s bloody and I am always amazed it was made for tv. Great video!!

Apostle (2018) is also really great. it's a look at a cult from an outsiders perspective as it spirals out of control. it's set in 1905 so it's quite different from other cult movies.

another cult movie based on an actual IRL cult (that many people don't know) is colonia with daniel brühl and emma watson! especially terrifying considering the german government in chile helped the cult and survivors of the colonia dignidad have been running the compound on their own after their leader's arrest and you could now visit an actual torture compound as a tourist attraction...

Completely accurate representation of Flannery O'Conner novella Wiseblood. Brad Dourif should've won an Oscar for this. Harry Dean Stanton also knocks it outta the park as a blind preacher. True Southern gothic.

My favorite cult movie ever was: The Sound of My Voice(2011)....it’s chilling and The Sacrament was really eerie because I imagine it’s very similar to what Jonestown was like. And The Veil (2016) with Jessica Alba... I know it’s not the best movie ever but I liked what they were getting at (the cult leader REALLY was on to something... watch it. It’s interesting.)

Love this list. I'd like to direct you to the original Helter Skelter, staring Steve Railsback. He's the best and most bone-chilling Manson.

I just made a Manson list a few days ago on Letterboxd! I've seen all the depictions of that time and Helter Skelter from 78 and Charlie Says are the best and most accurate regarding keeping in line with memoirs of those involved etc. I LOVE WACO - BEST SERIES NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT, ive seen it 3 times, and am actually reading the memoirs the series was based on. Amazing & completely enthralling on so many layers. The new WACO is the best visual medium to covers all perspectives & acting is AMAZING! Also you may like a series called 'THE PATH' 3 seasons with aaron paul. Loved the endless!

First, I have not seen ANY of these except Midsommar and Children of the Corn. Where should I start? Also, I would be interested to see you make a list about your favorite non horror movies. I know you talk about non horror movies some, but it would be good to see it all together in a list.

Martha Marcy May Marlene is a trio, kinda surreal. I'm still confused about the ending, like was real or her imagination ? Was anyone really after her. Red State was definitely a trip to watch. Definitely recommend. The original Wicker Man was interesting. Did not like the remake.

I just watched the movie Believers 2007. A GREAT CULT BASED MOVIE I NEVER HEARD OF BUT IT WAS FANTASTIC! It would have been a great addition to this list!

This is so cool! I only just made a list of all the cult-centered films I've seen. Thanks for the recommendations, now I've got a few more to add to my watchlist 😁. Most of the ones I've seen are a lot more about those fictionalized cults. They're such an interesting subject and the amount of KZfaq videos I've watched is crazy. The fact that there are still websites online for some of them is so strange. In terms of fictionalized cults I love Lovecraftian ones the most. Of all the 'cult' films I've seen (that aren't really 'revealed' to be cults) my ranking is: 8. Cats (1/10) 7. Apostle (5/10) 6. The Other Lamb (5/10) 5. The Void (6/10) 4. The Invitation (7/10) 3. Midnight Special (9/10) 2. Doctor Sleep (9/10) 1. Midsommar (10/10) I still really need to see The Endless and all those Manson ones, I've been meaning too for so long!

There's a movie called Kill List (2011) that I really think you should watch. Maybe you already did (I don't remember if a cult being involved would be a spoiler) but I'll never forget the ending of the movie, it was reeeally impactful.

Cool idea for a video, When i think a movie about cults i always think The Wicker Man and one of my favorite movies of 2019 was about a cult - Midsommar, And Race With The Devil is a great movie involving a cult, Totally underrated

Also unbreakable kimmy schmidt is fun and talks about a girl who got out of a cult and how it affects her life even after leaving and how you get kinda like frozen in how you act and how it can be hard to adapt
